With just one week left to go until the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are quite close in the polls, but a few pieces of data in particular are looking good for the Democratic candidate.
As of November 2nd, Real Clear Politics’ polling average has Donald Trump ahead of Hillary Clinton by 0.8 percentage points in Florida. That is a shift from this time last week, when Clinton was ahead of Trump in the state by an average of 2.4 percentage points.
But the latest poll that’s gaining a significant amount of attention is from William & Mary College, and it has Clinton ahead of Trump in Florida by eight points, 48 percent to 40 percent. Most surprisingly, though, that poll has Clinton winning 28 percent of Florida’s Republican early voters. On the other hand, Donald Trump is winning just six percent of Democratic early voters. Clinton is also winning early voters overall, with 55 percent of early voters saying they voted for Hillary Clinton and 43 percent saying they voted for Donald Trump. Among those who have not yet voted, though, this poll showed the race to be much tighter: 43 percent of these voters back Donald Trump, and 42 percent of them back Hillary Clinton.

Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, barreled toward the southeastern United States on Thursday after killing at least 69 people, mostly in Haiti, on its deadly northward march.
As Matthew blew through the northwestern Bahamas on Thursday, it was predicted to strengthen from a Category 3 to 4 storm en route to Florida’s Atlantic coast, the U.S. National HurricaneCenter said. The storm could either take direct aim at Florida or brush along the state’s coast on Thursday night.
Some 65 people were killed in Haiti and thousands were displaced after the storm smashed homes and inundated neighborhoods earlier in the week.

Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in almost a decade, hit Cuba and Haiti with 140 mile-per-hour (230 kph) winds on Tuesday, pummeling towns, farmland and resorts, and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to take cover.
Dubbed by the U.N. the worst humanitarian crisis to hit Haiti since a devastating 2010 earthquake, the Category Four hurricane unleashed torrential rain on the island of Hispaniola that Haiti shares with Dominican Republic.
As it barreled towards the United States, the eye of the storm had reached the coast of eastern Cuba by Tuesday evening, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Florida with a cargo ship bound for the International Space Station on Friday, and its reusable main-stage booster landed itself on an ocean platform in a dramatic spaceflight first.
The liftoff at 4:43 p.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral marked the resumption of resupply flights by privately owned Space Exploration Technologies for NASA following a launch accident in June 2015 that destroyed a different cargo payload for the space station.
About 2 and a half minutes after Friday’s launch, the main part of the two-stage SpaceX rocket separated, turned around and headed toward a landing platform floating in the Atlantic about 185 miles of Cape Canaveral.

A fossilized lizard found in Southeast Asia preserved in amber dates back some 99 million years, Florida scientists have determined, making it the oldest specimen of its kind and a “missing link” for reptile researchers.
The lizard is some 75 million years older than the previous record holder, according to researchers at the Florida Museum of Natural History, who announced the finding this week.
It was found decades ago in a mine along with other ancient, well-preserved reptile fossils, but the U.S. scientists were able to analyze the finds only recently.
“It was incredibly exciting to see these animals for the first time,” Edward Stanley, a member of the research team, said on Saturday. “It was exciting and startling, actually, how well they were preserved.”

Ocean exploration has been the Cousteau family business for three generations. In this fascinating Q&A, aquanaut Fabien Cousteau discusses everything from why we need underwater cities to what it’s like to beat your grandfather’s world record.
In 1963, Jacques Cousteau lived for 30 days in an underwater laboratory positioned on the floor of the Red Sea, and set a world record in the process. This summer, his grandson Fabien Cousteau broke that record. The younger Cousteau lived for 31 days aboard the Aquarius, an underwater research laboratory nine miles off the coast of Florida. While he and his team conducted experiments — they did three years worth of science in 31 says — and held virtual classroom sessions with students around the world, each moment of their adventure was captured on film. Lots of the footage can be found on the Mission 31 YouTube channel, and Cousteau is making a documentary about his Mission 31 experience.

A Florida teen who had been arrested for violating his juvenile probation will be honored as a hero for saving the life of the cop who was booking him in jail.
Surveillance footage captures the moment back in September when Fort Lauderdale police officer Franklin Foulks, 49, collapses from chest pain as he’s booking Jamal Rutledge, 17.
Foulks falls back while he’s doing paper work, struggles on the ground and grabs at his chest. Rutledge springs into action and begins kicking on the security door, alerting other officers. Detective DeAnna Greenlaw told the Sun Sentinel that Rutledge also yelled for help.

A Florida man who lost his hands and feet to bacterial meningitis is a person of interest in the deaths of his parents, police say.
Sean Petrozzino, 30, had moved in with his parents, Nancy, 64 and Michael, 63, after separating from his wife.
On Wednesday, the couple was found fatally shot in their home, and their son was nowhere to be found. Cops ruled their deaths homicides. Although he has not been named a suspect, police say Petrozzino is dangerous.

Daredevil acrobat Nik Wallenda gingerly crossed two wires, at one point blindfolded and without a safety harness or a net, strung between two Chicago skyscrapers on a Sunday evening in a derring-do high-wire act above the Windy City. Holding a pole, Wallenda cautiously moved across a wire that was 3/4-inch thick. With cheers and whistles coming from a crowd gathered below, the stunt was captured live on the Discovery Channel and streamed at SkyScraperLive.
It was the latest feat for Wallenda, who in June 2013 became the first person to walk across the Grand Canyon on a wire. Wallenda took on a 15-degree incline for the first part of the Chicago walk and then wore a blindfold during the second part of it. He trained at his home near Sarasota, Florida, on exact replicas of the two wires he crossed in Chicago.
By completing part two of the challenge, Discovery said Wallenda had performed the world’s highest walk wearing a blindfold. Wallenda also broke the world record for the incline aspect, too, Reuters reported, citing a Guinness World Records’ representative interviewed on the Discovery Channel.

Jordan Davis would have turned 19 on Sunday.
The black teen was killed in 2012 while sitting in a car with his friends outside a Jacksonville, Florida convenience store, listening to music.
That music was too loud for Michael Dunn. Following an argument over the volume, the 45-year-old man fired his gun into the carful of teenagers, killing Davis. Dunn told his fiancee the teens were playing “thug music.”
On the eve of Davis’ birthday, a mistrial was declared on the first-degree murder charge. The jury found Dunn guilty of attempted second-degree murder and a count of firing into an occupied car.
