Brown tree snakes in Guam have wildlife officials there seeing red. That’s why the officials are air-dropping poisoned mice as a lethal treat for the mildly venomous serpents, an invasive species that has devastated native animal populations on the Pacific island, the BBC reported.

Between listeria-tainted cantaloupes and salmonella in grape tomatoes, the produce aisle has become quite a scary place. How can we be sure that what we’re eating is actually safe? I usually give fruits and vegetables a brief rinse or a quick spin in the salad spinner but given all the recent food recalls, I’m starting to rethink this laid-back approach. Is regular old water really enough?

When it comes to technology, Silicon Valley remains a metonym for the industry as a whole. Small tech startups often open up shop in the area — if only to make a name for themselves — and many of America’s greatest tech companies and venture capitalists reside there as well.
But technology hubs can be found beyond the rolling green hills of the South Bay. As the industry continues to grow at an economy-defying rate and venture capitalists pour millions into burgeoning niches like the education-tech sector, new firms no longer feel the need for an office with a San Francisco or San Jose zip code.

ATLANTA — The pharmacy that distributed a steroid linked to an outbreak of fungal meningitis has issued a voluntary recall of all of its products, calling the move a precautionary measure.
The New England Compounding Center announced the recall Saturday. The company said in a news release that the move was taken out of an abundance of caution because of the risk of contamination. It says there is no indication that any other products have been contaminated.

Engineers are battling to save the European Space Agency’s (Esa) flagship Earth observation mission – Envisat.
Controllers say the eight-tonne spacecraft appears to be in a stable condition, but they are not receiving any data at all from it.
Contact was lost with Envisat at the weekend shortly after it downloaded pictures of Spain’s Canary Islands.

Municipal budgets around the country have been squeezed tight in recent years, and a city official in one town allegedly exacerbated those financial woes to fund her horse breeding habit.
Rita Crundwell, the comptroller and treasurer of the small Illinois town of Dixon, was arrested Tuesday on charges of embezzling $33.2 million from city coffers, the Chicago Tribune reports.

A 5,500-year-old tomb possibly belonging to a Stone Age chieftain has been unearthed at a megalithic monument in the shape of a ship called the Ale’s Stenar (Ale’s Stones). The tomb, in Sweden, was likely robbed of stones to build the Viking-era ship monument.
“We found traces — mostly imprints — of large boulders,” said lead archaeologist Bengst Söderberg of the Swedish National Heritage Board. “So my conviction is that some of the stones at least, they are standing on the ship setting.”
