Racial justice website spotlights a troubling part of American history

Dark parts of American history are often swept under the rug for being too shameful and painful. But engaging with that history is crucial to understand the present — and figure out how to move forward.

A new website, called Monroe Work Today, is bringing the harrowing history of lynching in the United States out of the shadows. Its detailed map and other resources document the names and experiences of nearly 5,000 people of color who were killed between 1835 and 1963.

“History class taught you the tip of the iceberg,” the site reads. “Every citizen has a duty to know this story. This history belongs to everyone.”

What Do I Do If My Teen Is Thinking About Suicide?

They say that the worst pain in life is losing a child. When parents hear that their child is thinking about suicide, or has even tried to commit suicide, they often become paralyzed by the fear that they will say or do something that will lead their child to take their own life. Many parents coming into our suicide prevention programs say “I feel like I am walking on eggshells and don’t know what to do.” Yet, parents are rarely involved in treatment to any great extent. In fact, we have heard from many parents that they have been discouraged from participating in their child’s mental health treatment!

DR Congo toughest place for mothers – Save the Children

The Democratic Republic of Congo is the world’s toughest place to raise children, Save the Children reports.

Finland was named the best place to be a mother, with Sweden and Norway following in second and third places.

The charity compared factors such as maternal health, child mortality, education and income in 176 countries.

In India, over 300,000 babies die within 24 hours of being born, accounting for 29% of all newborn deaths worldwide, the report says.

The 10 bottom-ranked countries were all from sub-Saharan Africa, with one woman in 30 dying from pregnancy-related causes on average and one child in seven dying before his or her fifth birthday.

In DR Congo, war and poverty have left mothers malnourished and unsupported at the most vulnerable time of their lives.

Aryeh Eller, New York Teacher Removed From Classroom For Sexual Harassment, Paid Nearly $1 Million To Do Nothing

For one year’s work as a full-time music teacher in New York City more than a decade ago, Aryeh Eller has collected almost $1 million in salary from the city.

Eller, 46 years old, was removed from his post at Hillcrest High School in Queens in 1999 and confessed to numerous allegations that he sexually harassed female students, the New York Post reports.

But like dozens of other New York City “rubber room” cases, an independent arbitrator determined that Eller couldn’t be fired because the city failed to inform the teacher of his rights. But the city’s Department of Education, deeming Eller unfit for the classroom but also unable to fire him, placed him in a holding room and reassigned him to administrative duty.

CASPER, Wyo. — A man wielding a sharp-edged weapon killed one person in a Casper neighborhood Friday before killing a male teacher and himself in front of students in a community college classroom, causing a campus-wide lockdown as authorities tried to piece together what happened.

Police found the suspect and teacher dead at a science building on the Casper College campus, which was locked down for about two hours, school and police officials said. The other victim, a woman, was found in a street about two miles away.

Do Schools Kill Creativity?

I’ve spoken twice at TED. The first time was in 2006. TED was a very different event then. It was a private conference for about 1,200 people. After the event, the talks were packaged in a box set of DVDs and sent just to the attendees. I gave a talk called “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” A few months later, Chris Anderson, the curator of TED, called to say they were planning to put a few talks on their website as an experiment and asked if they could include mine. The timing was perfect. Social media was beginning to take shape and the insatiable appetite for YouTube and short videos was about to emerge.

Watch game developer Kevin Slavin’s TEDTalk above and then explore his thoughts in this companion essay.

Back at TEDGlobal, the most difficult aspect of preparation was the editing process, chipping away at three hours of material to cut it down into 14 live minutes.

Of all the darlings that were killed, the ones I missed most were a few minutes about genetic algorithms. Like everything I presented, it’s a subject for which I have interest and passion, not training or expertise. It’s going to seem very dull. But stay with me for a few of the missing minutes.

Salman Khan: Let’s Use Video To Reinvent Education

Watch Salman Khan discuss the reinvention of education through video, then read a follow-up post by YouTube Education’s Angela Lin below.

Growing up, my mother always told me: “You’ll learn more from a journey of 10,000 miles than from reading 10,000 books.” For years I thought it was a saying she had invented, a justification for taking me out of school for weeks at a time to satisfy her love of travel. I later realized she was quoting an old Chinese proverb that summed up the importance of gaining firsthand experience when learning about new ideas, new people and new cultures.
