A cigarette butt proved to be the undoing of a man suspected of killing a girl in Utah 18 years ago, after a sheriff trailed him for four days to grab the DNA evidence.
Without the efforts of Wasatch County Sheriff Todd Bonner, the case would have been forgotten long ago. For Bonner, however, it was personal. As the original investigator in the bludgeoning death of the teenage prostitute in 1995, he couldn’t let it go.
“It was haunting me my whole career,” Bonner told The Associated Press on Friday. “It doesn’t matter that she was a street girl. This is a 17-year-old girl – a human being. I could care less what she did for a living. She was doing what she had to survive.”
The body of Krystal Lynn Beslanowitch was found Dec. 6, 1995, along the Provo River near Midway.

Police say a Florida man strangled and ran her over a 14-year-old with an SUV when she refused to have sex with him.
Adrian Mendez, 21, was arrested Monday in his home in Marion County, the Ocala Post reports. The girl was found lying on the side of the road Sunday evening with neck injuries and crushed legs and hips.
Her injuries were life-threatening, Click Orlando reported, but she is now in stable condition.
She told police that around 7 p.m., Mendez offered her $200 to have sex with him. When she refused, she says he pulled her by the hair into his SUV and choked her until she passed out.

Online, he went by the name “Dread Pirate Roberts” and ran what authorities called “the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet today.”
But his real name, according to an FBI criminal complaint released Wednesday, was Ross William Ulbricht. And despite allegedly operating a sprawling black market bazaar that earned $1.2 billion in sales, the 29-year-old lived a humble lifestyle, paying $1,000 a month for a room in a San Francisco apartment he shared with two roommates.
On Wednesday, the FBI said they had arrested Ulbricht and shut down his website, Silk Road, which had become a booming marketplace for illegal drugs, computer hacking tools and other illicit goods and services.
Ulbricht had been operating the site since January 2011 under the online nickname “Dread Pirate Roberts,” an apparent reference to a fictional character from “The Princess Bride” book and movie, according to the FBI.

Federal authorities said Wednesday they had seized a website that was considered one of the most popular places on the Internet for buying drugs and other illicit goods and services.
In a criminal complaint, the FBI said they had charged Ross William Ulbricht, also known as “Dread Pirate Roberts,” with operating the site, “Silk Road,” since January 2011.
Authorities said the Silk Road provided an online platform for drug dealers around the world to anonymously sell narcotics — including heroin, LSD and cocaine. The Silk Road was also a “sprawling black market bazaar” for buying and selling other illegal activities, including malicious software used for computer hacking, authorities said.
The Silk Road has long been in the crosshairs of authorities. In 2011, Sen. Charles Schumer called the site “a certifiable one-stop shop for illegal drugs that represents the most brazen attempt to peddle drugs online that we have ever seen. It’s more brazen than anything else by lightyears.”

Artist and therapy student Anna and her friends marked a birthday in New York recently with a familiar ritual: They pumped up the electronic music, danced, and celebrated with a special guest called Molly.
.
“It was a group of about 12 people at someone’s house and we were all just celebrating,” Anna recalled. “Somebody had it and, and you know, it was a pretty electronic music kind of crowd.”
Molly, an illegal stimulant frequently sold in pill form, has become prominent in the electronic music scene over the past decade, said Anna, 26, who did not want to give her full name because she is in school and “counseling people to be healthy.”
Molly is the street name for a drug that is pushed as the pure powder form of a banned substance known as MDMA, the main chemical in ecstasy. In the last five years, Molly has made its way into popular culture, helped by references to it made by entertainers such as Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Kanye West.

Two brothers who spent 25 years in prison for a killing they insist they didn’t commit walked out of a Detroit courthouse as free men on Thursday.
Circuit Judge Lawrence Talon formally dismissed the murder charges against Raymond and Thomas Highers a day after Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced she didn’t plan to retry the men for the 1987 slaying of 65-year-old Robert Karey.
The brothers and the dozen or so family and friends in attendance abided by a request from defense lawyer Valerie Newman not to “hoot and holler” in the courtroom.
“There’ll be lots and lots of time to celebrate,” she told them.
Celebrate they did, once they poured out of the building.
Thomas Highers, 48, walked down the courthouse steps and gave his uncle a bear hug while cheers rang out.

A Florida woman who became famous for her uncontrollable hiccupping was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday night and will serve life in prison without parole.
A Pinellas County jury deliberated for four hours before delivering the verdict against 22-year-old Jennifer Mee.
Mee wept in the Clearwater courtroom as the verdict was read. Minutes later, Judge Nancy Moate Ley explained that the only possible sentence for the charge was life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The verdict and five-day trial was a sad end to a chapter in Mee’s short and sad life. Her attorneys said she suffered from schizophrenia and Tourette’s Syndrome, and a court psychiatrist said Mee’s intelligence was “low normal.”
As a 15-year-old, Mee developed a case of the hiccups that wouldn’t go away. She appeared on several TV shows and while on the “Today” show, was hugged by fellow guest and country music star Keith Urban. She tried home remedies and consulted medical specialists, a hypnotist and an acupuncturist, until the hiccups finally stopped on their own, though not for good.

A suspicious Missouri school official led police to a woman who allegedly kidnapped her own grandson 13 years ago.
Sandy Hatte, 60, is accused of taking the boy from his Florida home in 2000, when the child was an infant. She recently tried to enroll him in a Livingston County, Mo., school, but an official saw red flags, ABC News reports.
“They had some concerns about an individual who had enrolled a child into school and had some concerns if they were the actual parent,” Livingston County Det. Eric Menconi told the station.
The official was right. Authorities now believe that Hatte kidnapped the boy more than a decade ago while his father was at work. When she tried to send him to the school, she claimed to be his mother, WDAF reports.

Police who have dealt with serial killer Gary Ridgway say it’s worth continuing the search for his missing victims after Ridgway suggested he could help find them, but add the Green River Killer will “play games” and lie.
Ridgway has said he might be able to locate the bodies of more women he killed. Ridgway told KOMO () that the Green River Task Force mostly kept him in a van in 2003 when he directed them to sites in the Seattle area where he dumped bodies in the 1980s. He’d like to revisit every site on foot and says he could have had as many as 80 victims.
Ridgway was convicted of killing 49 women and authorities say it’s possible there are more victims. But King County Sheriff John Urquhart warns that Ridgway can’t be trusted.
