The U.S. Supreme Court Monday handed a legal victory to advocates of banning firearms commonly known as assault weapons.
By leaving a suburban Chicago gun control law intact, the court gave a boost to efforts aimed at imposing such bans elsewhere, at a time of renewed interest in gun regulation after recent mass shootings.
Police say the attackers in San Bernardino used such weapons as did the gunman who attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic two weeks ago in Colorado.
The court declined to take up a challenge to a 2013 law passed in Highland Park, Illinois that bans the sale, purchase, or possession of semi-automatic weapons that can hold more than ten rounds in a single ammunition clip or magazine. It specifically includes certain rifles, including those resembling the AR-15 and AK-47 assault-style firearms.

D last Friday’s shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, women’s reproductive rights faced a new threat Thursday when the U.S. Senate moved forward with its decision to end all of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding.
Though Democrats advocated for retaining the funding, Republicans took the party-line vote at 54-46; the move is part of the Republican Party’s continued attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The White House has stated that President Barack Obama will veto the ruling.

A gunman armed with an AK-47-style weapon burst into a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs Friday, shooting at police from inside the building during the ensuing five-hour standoff.
Three people, including a police officer, died during the incident, Colorado Springs Police Department Lt. Catherine Buckley said. Nine others, including five officers, were wounded. All nine were in good condition at area hospitals, she added.
The slain officer was identified as Garrett Swasey, 44, of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs police force.

Tens of millions of people in the middle of the country are facing a three-day tornado threat — including places that were ravaged earlier this week by an outbreak of twisters.
A tornado touched down near Throckmorton, Texas, the National Weather Service said, but there were no reports of serious damage. Tornadoes were also seen touching down in Haskell and Wilbarger counties, also in Texas, on Friday, the NWS said.
Thunderstorms, carrying large hail, broke out across the Southern Plains Friday, and a tornado watch was posted for parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico Friday night.
The threat extends through Sunday — Mother’s Day — and includes a busy weekend of commencement ceremonies. The University of Oklahoma already canceled graduation activities scheduled for Friday night due to “dangerous weather conditions.”

A teenage Colorado girl whose remains were found dumped in a suitcase in a remote park area last month died from a drug overdose, the local coroner’s office said on Tuesday.
Kelly Mae Myers, 18, was reported missing in the mountain town of Grand Junction in December by relatives who said she may have tried to hitchhike to visit friends in Salt Lake City.
Police believe Myers died at a hotel in West Valley City, Utah, and that her body was then taken to the Cactus Creek area of Colorado. They have named two people of interest in her death.

Even in mid-summer, the air is cold and restless atop the dividing line that separates the Colorado River watershed to the west from the drainage basins that eventually feed into the Mississippi River to the east.
Above the tree line in Rocky Mountain National Park, flowers have bloomed but are stunted, clinging to the surface to anchor themselves against the constant, battering winds. Pikas, which look like a cross between a chipmunk and a marmot, thrive at these cold, high altitudes, darting in and out of rock formations to the delight of summer tourists.
There are still a few snowdrifts in mid-July, leftovers from last winter, and soon the snows will begin again. Lately, though, the winter snows and late summer rainfall has not been nearly enough to put a dent in the drought that has gripped the Southwest since 2004.

Colorado’s second-highest court ruled Thursday that some people convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana can ask for those convictions to be thrown out under the law that legalized recreational marijuana in the state.
The Colorado Court of Appeals said people whose cases were under appeal when Amendment 64 took effect in December 2012 are eligible to have their convictions reversed.
A spokeswoman for the Attorney General John Suthers said prosecutors are reviewing the opinion to determine any next steps.

Investors looking for high returns took to Colorado this week and poured more than $1 million into the burgeoning legalized recreational marijuana industry in the state.
In Denver, more than 60 investors from The ArcView Group met with 22 startup marijuana companies — including several directly involved in marijuana sales or cultivation, which was a first for the investment group — seeking capital. By the end of the meetings, the investors committed “well over $1 million” to Colorado marijuana companies, ArcView CEO Troy Dayton told The Denver Post.
And it may have been even more, however, due to Colorado’s marijuana laws which requires investors to qualify as state residents for three years before making equity investments in a marijuana business, some investors had to cap their deal pens.
ArcView president Steve DeAngelo told Bloomberg Businessweek that more than 90 percent of ArcView’s investors at the meeting came from out of state — meaning the overwhelming majority of them could not invest.
