Prosecutors on Thursday charged a Minnesota man with murdering his missing wife, after investigators found blood traces throughout the couple’s home and evidence of an extensive effort to cover it up.
Authorities said they have not found 30-year-old Kira Trevino’s body, but they believe she’s dead because of the amount of blood found in her car and in the couple’s St. Paul home and because it wasn’t like her to disappear without telling anyone.
Jeffery Dale Trevino, 39, was arrested Tuesday and made an initial court appearance Thursday. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in his wife’s death, which investigators believe happened last Thursday or Friday. Bail was set at $1 million.

Looking at photos from the November spill, so eerily similar to the photos from BP’s April 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico, it’s clear we are still looking for energy in risky places, and largely unprepared to deal with the consequences of failure. One year after the BP spill (which workers soaked up, in large part, with straw bales), the X Prize Foundation announced winners of a million-dollar incentive to develop new tools to clean up oil spills: And many others are looking at this problem too, including one of TED’s Senior Fellows, Cesar Harada. Harada is an inventor — of a staggering number of kinds of things. One of them is the Open_Sailing project, a group of inventors and scientists building open-source hardware and software to explore and study the ocean.

A Mediterranean diet enhanced with extra-virgin olive oil or extra servings of nuts lowered the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events in people, study finds.
All roads lead to Rome when eating for heart health, a major study has found — or at least they point to the advantages of the Mediterranean diet for those at high risk for heart disease.
Researchers in Spain found that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced incident of major cardiovascular events, according to a study published online today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

How did the largest of all dinosaurs evolve necks longer than any other creature that has ever lived? One secret: mostly hollow neck bones, researchers say.
The largest creatures to ever walk the Earth were the long-necked, long-tailed dinosaurs known as the sauropods. These vegetarians had by far the longest necks of any known animal. The dinosaurs’ necks reached up to 50 feet (15 meters) in length, six times longer than that of the current world-record holder, the giraffe, and at least five times longer than those of any other animal that has lived on land.

Star-shaped waves can form in vibrating tanks of liquid oil, researchers say.
Learning more about such bizarre waves could shed light on counterparts that may exist elsewhere in nature, researchers added.
Waves of all kinds often behave in an intuitively linear manner. For instance, a weight on a spring will bob up and down in a manner directly proportional to the force that the weight exerts on the spring.
However, a number of strange waves can also form. They come from what is called nonlinearity, in which a small or simple change results in a disproportionately large or complex effect. For instance, aspects of weather behave chaotically, in a nonlinear manner.

Researchers have discovered a new type of gravity wave, one that is shaped like a star. Such bizarre waves result from a property called nonlinearity, in which a small or simple change results in a disproportionately large or complex effect. For instance, aspects of weather behave chaotically, in a nonlinear manner.

A man has been convicted of beheading a British woman with a knife inside a supermarket on a Spanish resort island and will be sentenced to spend time in a psychiatric institution.
A court in Santa Cruz on the Canary island of Tenerife found that Deyan Valentinov, a 20-year-old homeless Bulgarian man, had committed the act of murder but was not criminally responsible for his actions because he has acute paranoid schizophrenia.
Valentinov will later be sentenced at a later date to between 10 and 15 years in a secure psychiatric unit, court spokesman Gonzalo Perez said Friday.

Everyone knows that protecting an organization’s technology footprint has always been a delicate balancing act. Nowadays, literally everything about a given organization’s technology portfolio is in a near-constant state of change; technologies change, usage changes and the threat landscape changes. Changes come at higher frequency — and at increasing scale.
Now more than ever, there is no status quo in technology. This presents a bit of a quandary for organizations that wish to approach technology risk in a systematic and structured way. Why? Because how do you follow a systematic and structured process for something changing in an unstructured, unpredictable way?

Scientists say the Martian soil at the rover Curiosity’s landing site contains minerals similar to what’s found on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano.
The finding released Tuesday is the latest step in trying to better understand whether the environment could have been hospitable to microbial life.
Curiosity recently ingested its first soil sample and used one of its instruments to tease out the minerals present. An analysis revealed it contained feldspar and olivine, minerals typically associated with volcanic eruptions. Mission scientists say the Martian soil is similar to volcanic soil on the flanks of Mauna Kea.

This handout photo provided by NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS, taken Oct. 15, 2012, shows part of the small pit or bite created when NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity collected its second scoop of Martian soil at a sandy patch called “Rocknest.” The bright particle near the center of this image, and similar ones elsewhere in the pit, prompted concern because a small, light-toned shred of debris from the spacecraft had been observed previously nearby. However, the mission’s science team assessed the bright part

Until a couple of years ago I didn’t even realise that a freshwater fish could grow this large. But in the Fraser River system, in British Columbia Canada these monsters have been protected since the 1970′s. They were almost fished to extinction back then until the government did a great thing and protected them. There are stories from back in the day about how large they can grow, apparently up to about 18 feet, but the largest one caught recently was 12 feet, near Chilliwack, BC.
They are very long living, and slow growing, so it stands to reason that these fish are only starting to get large again after they were almost killed off in the 70s. The 12 footer was estimated to be about 100 years old, and it weighed over 1100 pounds.
