Brittany Maynard’s purposeful passing Saturday drove new dialogue on aid in dying, but her illness also reminded the world that science seems stuck in its bid to cure the most common type of brain cancer.
Maynard, 29 had glioblastoma, a fast-invading malignancy that, according to the National Brain Tumor Society, is “the most deadly, most prevalent form.” Even after surgery and chemotherapy, the tumor typically kills people in about 18 months, the group says.
Then, on Sunday, Lauren Hill, 19, stirred cheers and tears by notching two baskets for her Ohio college despite playing with a brain tumor that doctors project could claim her in weeks. Like Maynard, Hill’s tumor is in the glioma family. Her cancer is on the brain stem, which controls breathing and pulse, leaving surgeons unable to remove it while no drug has been found to effectively treat it.

Battling cancer can have long-term effects on the heart.
Treating cancer isn’t yet a precise science. Although doctors are getting better at targeting tumors, there’s still no magic bullet that homes in on cancer cells and destroys them without risking collateral damage to other parts of the body. The outward signs of off-target destruction include classic side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy such as hair loss, nausea, and fatigue. But there can be silent inner damage, too, sometimes to the heart and arteries. These injuries can appear immediately during therapy; other times they don’t surface for years.
“Important advances in our ability to fight cancer over the last few decades have translated into improved survival,” says Dr. Erica L. Mayer, an oncologist at Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. “But we are also learning that many of these lifesaving therapies have the potential to affect the heart and other parts of the body.”
Once relegated to the back burner, the late effects of cancer care are gradually getting more attention. One turning point was the publication in 2005 of From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition. This influential report from the Institute of Medicine put a spotlight on the disjointed care often received by the 12 million-plus cancer survivors in the United States after their cancer treatment has ended.

For 85% of kids with a terrible cancer called acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chemotherapy is a cure–but not for Emily Whitehead. Diagnosed at 5, she suffered an infection from her first round of chemo and nearly lost her legs. Then the cancer came back; she was put into remission once more and scheduled for a bone marrow transplant. As she waited, the cancer returned yet again. There was nothing else to try.
Nothing except a crazy experimental treatment never before given to a child: Blood was taken out of 6-year-old Emily’s body, passed through a machine to remove her white cells and put back in. Then scientists at the University of Pennsylvania used a modified HIV virus to genetically reprogram those white cells so that they would attack her cancer, and reinjected them.
.
Emily Whitehead was saved by a radical new weapon against cancer.

A genetic variant that increases the risk of testicular cancer may be favored by evolution because it helps protect those with fair skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays, according to a new study. The finding could account for white men being more susceptible than black men to this type of cancer. It may also explain why testicular cancer is so readily treatable.
Gareth Bond, a molecular biologist at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Oxford, U.K., and colleagues hit upon the unexpected tradeoff while studying inherited genes that influence cancer risk. They were especially interested in a gene known as p53, which is mutated in more than half of all cancers. The protein produced by this gene is a key defense for the cell—acting on a wide array of other genes to protect against many types of stress, including DNA damage and oxygen deprivation. It also protects against cancer, telling badly damaged cells to commit suicide. Mutations in p53, or in other genes with which it acts, prevent this order from being received, and damaged cells continue to reproduce, forming tumors.

This young woman didn’t know her birth control pills could cause a blood clot in leg that would kill her. Here, Anna’s mother recounts the devastating story.
Anna Frutiger had the world by the tail in the spring of 2010. The 23-year-old Michigan native was busy working toward her longtime dream of becoming a dentist. Athletic, pretty, and smart, Frutiger had just finished her first year at dental school in Pittsburgh when the unimaginable happened. A blood clot in her lungs, called a pulmonary embolism, landed her in a hospital emergency room in mid-May. Frutiger was fighting for her life.
That day was the culmination of a health crisis four months in the making. While training for a triathlon, Frutiger began feeling pain behind her knee and calf. “Her symptoms seemed to come and go — sometimes being very painful and other times they seemed to disappear,” recalled Sara Wassenaar, DDS, Frutiger’s mother, herself a dentist in Alma, Mich. At first she believed her leg pain was muscle-related, but Frutiger told her mother it wasn’t exactly the sort of pain she experienced with other muscle pulls. She was becoming unusually short of breath as well.

Kerry Harvey, 23, developed pains in her abdomen in December last year
-
She visited doctors repeatedly as pain worsened and she was given diagnoses ranging from a suspected miscarriage to stomach ulcers
-
In March she was rushed to hospital where a scan revealed she was suffering with cancer so advanced doctors didn’t know where it originated
-
In April she was diagnosed with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer, the same type that Apple founder Steve Jobs suffered from
-
Disease has spread to her liver and bones and doctors say it is incurable
-
She is now undergoing palliative chemotherapy and doing well – her bones are cancer-free and the tumour on her pancreas has shrunk
A young woman who was told by doctors that her crippling stomach pains were probably heartburn or a stomach ulcer is now battling advanced pancreatic cancer.
When Kerry Harvey, 23, from Chichester, West Sussex, was eventually diagnosed with stage four cancer, it had spread to her liver and bones and doctors said there was little they could do for her.
But to everyone’s relief, she is responding well to palliative treatment. Her latest scan revealed the tumour on her pancreas has shrunk, that her liver has become less cancerous and that the cancer has entirely retreated from her bones.
