The Apps You Need Now to Keep Your Privacy Intact

There are the basic things you can do to protect your data and your phone, like avoiding public Wi-Fi networks, enabling built-in tools like “Find My iPhone,” and using a good password. Both iOS and Android phones offer options for turning off “location services,” so apps can’t track your coordinates. But in an age of cyberattacks from renegade hackers, non-state actors, and government spies, it’s not a terrible idea to arm your phone with apps that provide encrypted communication, anonymous browsing, and theft protection.

Remix is the Android tablet that can replace your laptop

It took Microsoft three tries, but it finally scored a hit with the Surface Pro 3, which the company touts as the “tablet that can replace your laptop.”

Now, three former Google engineers are running with that idea in the Android arena.

The Remix tablet, unveiled on Wednesday at CES 2015 by Chinese company Jide, looks a lot like one of Microsoft’s Surface devices. It’s about the same size with an 11.6-inch screen, and the edge has a similar trapezoid shape that makes it suited to sitting at an angle. The Remix also has both a kickstand and a magnetically attached keyboard — two Surface hallmarks. Even the volume control feels the same.

Motorola Droid Turbo review

Motorola’s fast-charging Droid Turbo lets you live life away from the wall

Portly phones like the Apple iPhone 6 Plus and Google Nexus 6 get all the attention for a good reason: Some are so big that they actually overshadow their competition.

But not everyone wants a gadget they’ll struggle to shoehorn into a pair of Levi’s. And for anyone realizing bigger isn’t necessarily better, has Motorola got a phone for you! How does two-day battery life sound? And a 21-megapixel camera that can record 4K content? And a screen that can survive a drop in the sink (or God forbid, toilet) without issue?

With powerful features and battery life for days, the Motorola Droid Turbo is one helluva great phone.

Google acquires Boston Dynamics, the robot builder behind Big Dog and Cheetah

The New York Times reports tonight that Google has acquired Boston Dynamics, builder of terrifying walking robots DARPA-related projects like WildCat/Cheetah, Atlas, Petman and Big Dog. Andy Rubin has moved over from leading Android to directing Google’s robotics efforts and tweeted a link to the story, commenting that “The future is looking awesome!” While we’re sure it does — if you always thought the T-1000 was just misunderstood — reactions from meatbags are ranging from slightly uneasy to completely freaking out that a company with robots that go anywhere is teaming up with a company that seems to know everything about us.

There’s no word on how much Google spent to snap up the robotics company, but its founder Marc Raibert is quoted by the Times saying “I am excited by Andy and Google’s ability to think very, very big, with the resources to make it happen.” When we interviewed Raibert during Expand earlier this year (included after the break) he specifically highlighted his company’s recent growth and the possibility of building consumer-focused robots in the future.

Voxel Brings Its App Virtualization Tools To Android

After launching the iOS version of its mobile app advertising platform at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference in September, Voxel is announcing that it can now virtualize Android apps as well.

The Voxel platform allows developers to run their apps in the cloud, which in turn allows users to interact with apps without installing them. The company is pitching this as a new way for developers to advertise their apps (so a user can play a game before being asked to download it). The technology could eventually be used for other purposes, such as virtualizing enterprise apps to protect sensitive data.

Co-founder and CEO David Zhao (formerly the CEO of ZumoDrive-maker Zecter, which was acquired by Motorola Mobility) told me that since the initial launch, Voxel has attracted interest from a number of ad networks and publishers, though he couldn’t announce any new deals. (The company has already announced partnerships with RTB.com, AppSponsor, PlayHaven, and Quixey.)

We head to Boston, Mass. to hack a Buick Regal with CarKnow founder Josh Siegel. CarKnow is a tech startup that uses custom hardware and software to digitally duplicate your car in the cloud.
.
Supporting MIT’s CloudThink standard, CarKnow uses data generated by the vehicle to create various applications that allow for remote control of the car via a mobile device. Does all this vehicle data present a security threat for car owners?

With nearly a month to spare, startup Omate burst through its Kickstarter goal of US$100,000 this week and is on its way to shipping its TruSmart smartwatch in time for the holiday season.

More than $250,000 have been pledged so far toward the device, which is perhaps the closest thing yet to an Android smartphone that can be worn on a wrist.

Red Hot Dating App Tinder Officially Arrives On Android, Begins Hooking Up With Big Media

.

The Digital Dating World has seen its fair share of companies come and go over the years, and few have been able to give the usual suspects, like eHarmony, Match.com and OkCupid, a run for their respective monies. However, since bursting onto the scene in October of last year, Tinder has been making a play to become the next digital dating giant by focusing on an area where few (if any) of its predecessors have excelled: Your phone.

Drawing on the same addictive formula behind Hot or Not, Tinder allows those in search of a date (or a little casual flirting) to swipe through Facebook-powered profiles of prospective matches, accepting or rejecting based on visual appeal. Sure, it’s a bit superficial, but its game-ified approach to flirting is also more than a little addicting and has taken off among the SnapChat generation, beginning with college campuses.

In fact, since launching in October, Tinder has spread like wildfire — a fact that, as we reported in May, has had investors and potential acquirers drooling. Today, Tinder co-founder and CEO Sean Rad tells us, users have rated over seven billion profiles, and the app has served over 100 million matches in all (and is currently adding 1.5 million matches/day and growing, he says.)

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom review: a messy marriage of smartphone and camera

Android on a point-and-shoot? Last year we learned that it could be done. But with some features that duplicate the functionality of a smartphone without an ability to make calls, Samsung’s Galaxy Camera was a confusing mix of form and function. It was very much a first-generation device, and while they may have regretted it later, some curious early adopters did drop $500 for the soon-to-be-obsolete hybrid. The cumbersome compact, with its massive 21x lens and power-hungry 4.8-inch touchscreen, may not have won over the photography community, but Samsung’s 2013 approach has a much better chance at success.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra hands-on redux: benchmark and camera preview

You may have already read our Sony Xperia Z Ultra hands-on last week, but since then we’ve also been able to spend a tiny bit more time with a pre-production unit (with firmware build 14.1.B.1.277). Instead of going over again how hilariously large this 6.4-inch, pen-friendly phone is, this time we’ll focus on some early benchmark results, camera performance and Sony’s very own UX features.

As you’ll see after the break, many of the benchmark scores aren’t too far off from what we saw on the MDP phone with the same Snapdragon 800 SoC, and the final units should be optimized with higher numbers. While we didn’t manage to get CF-Bench and Quadrant running on the phone, the higher-than-before 3DMark score did cheer us up, meaning either Sony or Qualcomm’s managed to fine tune the latter’s new Adreno 330 GPU.
