No this isn’t a story about cyborgs! Have you ever looked up at the waxing or waning Moon and wondered about the line where it separates the visible from invisible? That line, where lunar day meets night, has a name: the terminator (insert corny Arnold Schwarzenegger joke here).
We all know the phases of the Moon are caused by the position of the Moon relative to the Sun. A full Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon are directly across from one another with the Earth in between. Then, about two weeks later, when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, no light falls on the side of the Moon we see, so it disappears from our view. We call this phase a new Moon. At every other angle, the Moon is either waxing or waning, with a fraction of it lit up, and a fraction in the dark.

It’s the same thing every summer: you turn on your porch lights and within minutes, you’re dealing with a swarm of bugs zooming around the lights – and bouncing off of your head or crash landing into your drink. What is it about light that brings out the bugs? Science tells us that this odd phenomenon is caused by phototaxis.
How Phototaxis Affects Insects
A phototactic animal or insect is one that instinctively moves to or away from light. The bugs that are swarming around your porch lights are positively phototactic, which means that they’re attracted to it. Bugs like cockroaches are negatively phototactic, which is why they scuttle away when you turn on a light.
What scientists aren’t quite sure of, though, is why insects are phototactic. Many believe that positively phototactic insects (like moths) use moonlight as a navigational tool. As they fly by moonlight, the Moon stays in a fixed position overhead. But when you turn on an artificial light, the moths see it as another Moon and become confused. As they try to guide themselves by your porch lights, they end up zooming back and forth in an effort to keep the “Moon” in sight.

A universal flu vaccine — one that provides immunity against every strain of the influenza virus for multiple years — is the holy grail of flu research. It would be a medical breakthrough on the order of penicillin, with the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives every year. And scientists just got one crucial step closer to making it a reality.
Two separate groups of scientists published papers this week demonstrating that a new type of flu vaccine can provide protection against multiple strains of the disease, rather than just one. Though a truly universal flu vaccine that could be given to humans remains years away, infectious disease experts hailed the new findings as a major breakthrough.
“These are very good papers. There are no problems with them,” Dr. Peter Palese, a renowned flu expert at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, told The Huffington Post. “What we need to do now is put [these vaccines] in humans and see if they work. That’s the only question at this point.”

On July 15, people all over the world watched a woman in a cubicle wait for a signal from three billion miles away. In a soft, clear voice, she confirmed that the New Horizons spacecraft had flown within 7,800 miles of Pluto and survived. In the following days, the spacecraft transmitted images that revealed for the first time what the surface of Pluto looks like. It has a smooth expanse just above its equator, some 1,000 miles wide, that resembles a bright, icy heart. It has frozen mountain ranges and spectral plains that may have only just formed. The detail of the photographs and the geological variety of Pluto exceeded all the hopes of NASA scientists. “I’m still having to remind myself to take deep breaths,” said one.

It’s not a question of if, but when.
Another Katrina-like hurricane, or worse, is out there, and for New Orleans the big questions are: How soon before the next one hits? How prepared will the city be?
“We’re dealing with probabilities here,” said Gerry Galloway, a retired Army Corps of Engineers general who is now an engineering professor at the University of Maryland. “There is nothing that prevents a hurricane the size of Katrina or Katrina-plus tomorrow. Sooner or later something like that is going to happen.”

Buried deep in the Antarctic ice, an observatory has spotted ghostly, nearly massless particles coming from inside our galaxy and points beyond the Milky Way.
Finding these cosmic neutrinos not only confirms their existence but also sheds light on the origins of cosmic rays, the researchers said.
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is made up of 86 shafts dug 8,000 feet into the ice near the South Pole. The shafts are equipped with detectors that look for the telltale light from high-energy particles plowing through the surrounding ice.

Astronomers have detected the smallest and most solar system-like planet ever directly imaged around another star.
The newly discovered planet called 51 Eridani B is about twice the mass of Jupiter, and orbits a star about 97 light-years from Earth.
The discovery, reported in the journal Science, will provide new insights into how planets and planetary systems are made.

Don’t call Bruce Willis just yet.
The rumors flying around Twitter, YouTube and other corners of the Internet about a giant asteroid striking Earth? Total nonsense, according to NASA.
The erroneous story varies, but mostly it goes like this: an asteroid will hit near Puerto Rico between September 15 and 28, 2015, and destroy much of the Southeastern United States, the Gulf Coast of Mexico, and parts of Central and South America.

It’s a creature so frightening that it may have inspired ancient legends such as the kraken, and so rare that only two intact adult specimens have ever been found. And on Tuesday, viewers around the world got to see the colossal squid like never before when scientists dissected one in a live webcast.
“This is essentially an intact specimen, which is almost an unparalleled opportunity for us to examine,” Kat Bolstad, squid scientist from the Auckland University of Technology and leader of the dissection, told the Associated Press. “This is a spectacular opportunity.”
Bolstad told AFP that the exam revealed the squid to be a female, still carrying eggs. Researchers also got an up-close look the eyes, which are nearly 14 inches in diameter.
