As a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who studies creativity, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many gifted and high-profile subjects over the years, but Kurt Vonnegut—dear, funny, eccentric, lovable, tormented Kurt Vonnegut—will always be one of my favorites. Kurt was a faculty member at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in the 1960s, and participated in the first big study I did as a member of the university’s psychiatry department. I was examining the anecdotal link between creativity and mental illness, and Kurt was an excellent case study.
He was intermittently depressed, but that was only the beginning. His mother had suffered from depression and committed suicide on Mother’s Day, when Kurt was 21 and home on military leave during World War II. His son, Mark, was originally diagnosed with schizophrenia but may actually have bipolar disorder. (Mark, who is a practicing physician, recounts his experiences in two books, The Eden Express and Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So, in which he reveals that many family members struggled with psychiatric problems. “My mother, my cousins, and my sisters weren’t doing so great,” he writes. “We had eating disorders, co-dependency, outstanding warrants, drug and alcohol problems, dating and employment problems, and other ‘issues.’ ”)

The University of Cambridge found a way to potentially solve the microplastic problem using Beyond Meat’s hero ingredient: plant-based pea protein.
California-based vegan meat brand Beyond Meat uses pea protein in its meat-like plant-based burgers and sausages. Unlike soy protein, pea protein is hypoallergenic—making it a more favorable source of protein. It’s also available in high quantities.
However, UK firm Xampla, a spin-out from the university, has found another way to use the ingredient. The firm has developed the “world’s first” plant-based protein to replace the microplastics in everyday items.
Inspired by the process spiders use to turn protein into silk, the start-up re-assembles plant proteins, such as pea proteins, into new structures to create films and microcapsules.
Xampla’s plant protein-based material is able to decompose “naturally and fully” in a matter of weeks. This makes it a better packaging alternative to traditional plastics. These can take hundreds to thousands of years to fully decompose.

Israeli biologists devised a strategy to jump-start the economy while stopping the spread or resurgence of the coronavirus.
Professors Uri Alon and Ron Milo of Israel’s elite Weizmann Institute developed a revolutionary method to get Israelis back to work, without risking a massive outbreak of the deadly coronavirus.
The two scientists incorporated knowledge from the fields of epidemiology and economics to create a scientific model that relies on a staggered approach that safely allows Israelis to return to work and other public places and workplaces without causing a new outbreak.
In the clip below, they explain their novel “10-4” routine, which “could suppress the epidemic while allowing sustainable economic activity.”

The cells in your immune system eat 100 billion dead cells in your body every day.
But sometimes, your body eats living cells, too — even though it’s not supposed to. Scientists don’t know why, but a new study from a team at the Salk Institute says that cellular barbarism might be the key to treating a host of neurodegenerative diseases.
Most people think by the time you’re an adult, you’re done making new neurons. But some parts of your brain are molecular busybodies and want to keep making them, so you end up with a lot more neurons than you need, and they end up dying.
To keep the neurons in check and not turn your body into a big neural graveyard, your immune system uses what are called microglia to clean out the dead neurons. Microglia are pretty much the trash collectors of your central nervous system. Unlike synaptic pruning, which just nibbles off the connections between neurons, this process — called phagocytosis — involves eating entire cells.
