It’s hard to believe Samsung’s new, matte The Frame is actually a TV

Not everyone cares about having the absolute best TV specs or pristine picture quality. It turns out there are a lot of people who hate having a traditional TV — this ugly black rectangle — disrupting the vibe and decor of their living room. Those are the same people who have turned Samsung’s The Frame TV into such a big hit. I’ve got family members and co-workers who’ve all bought The Frame in the last year because of how well it disguises itself as a piece of art when not being used. You can customize the TV’s bezels and swap between different options to get exactly the look you want when it’s on your wall.

However, some of those folks might soon wish they’d waited a little bit longer to buy. Because, for 2022, Samsung has introduced a matte display that cuts way back on glare and makes artwork showcased by The Frame almost look like canvas. I recently got the chance to check out the matte Frame and compare it side by side with last year’s model, and even though the older Frame by no means had what I’d consider a “glossy” display, the difference was pretty remarkable. It was to the point where I questioned whether I was looking at an actual TV set and had to get up close to hunt for pixels. They were indeed there.

The new Frame still has the same customizable bezels and now comes in more sizes, ranging from 43 inches ($999.99) to an 85-inch giant that’s over $4,000. All feature a 4K resolution. If you care about gaming, stick with 55 inches and above because you lose the fluid 120Hz refresh rate if you go smaller. The TV’s ports are still separated into a breakaway box that connects to The Frame with a thin cable.

How to Find the Wi-Fi Password for Any Network You’ve Ever Connected To

.

Are you looking for the Wi-Fi password for a network you’ve logged in to in the past? Whether it’s a school, work, or coffee shop network, the password should be stored on your laptop. But if it doesn’t automatically connect to the network next time, you may have to do a little digging to find out what the password is.

If your computer has connected to that Wi-Fi network before, don’t worry. The first time you connect to a network on a Mac or Windows computer, the network name and password are stored in memory. It’s fairly easy to dive into your computer settings to extract and record the password for other devices.

We’ll tell you how to find the passwords to all of the Wi-Fi networks you’ve ever connected to on MacOS and Windows. For more details, here’s what to know about the latest MacBook Pro and the MacOS Monterey update.

The era of fixing your own phone has nearly arrived

.

When I called up iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens, I figured he’d be celebrating — after years of fighting for right-to-repair, big-name companies like Google and Samsung have suddenly agreed to provide spare parts for their phones. Not only that, they signed deals with him to sell those parts through iFixit, alongside the company’s repair guides and tools. So did Valve.

But Wiens says he’s not done making deals yet. “There are more coming,” he says, one as soon as a couple of months from now. (No, it’s not Apple.) Motorola was actually the first to sign on nearly four years ago. And if Apple meaningfully joins them in offering spare parts to consumers — like it promised to do by early 2022 — the era of fixing your own phone may have well and truly come.

Last October, the United States effectively made it legal to open up many devices for the purpose of repair with an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Now, the necessary parts are arriving.

What changed? Weren’t these companies fighting tooth and nail to keep right-for-repair off the table, sometimes sneakily stopping bills at the last minute? Sure. But some legislation is getting through anyhow… and one French law, in particular, might have been the tipping point.

Why Elon Musk Bought Twitter

.

On Monday, Elon Musk bought Twitter for forty-four billion dollars. Musk, the C.E.O. of Tesla and the richest man on earth, plans to take the social-media company private, and has said that he wants Twitter to adhere more closely to the principles of free speech, which, in a statement, Musk called “the bedrock of a functioning democracy.” (In the same statement, he described Twitter as the “digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.”) Musk himself is a frequent tweeter, and it is assumed that he will continue to use the platform, and potentially reinstate the account of former President Donald Trump. He is also thought to be less likely to ban people for violations of the platform’s policies, which themselves may change.

To talk about Musk and what the future holds for his newest acquisition, I spoke by phone with Matt Levine, a Bloomberg Opinion columnist who has been comprehensively reporting on and analyzing this story over the past month in his newsletter. During our conversation, which has been edited for length and clarity, we discussed how Musk has used Twitter to further his business interests, how he views freedom of speech, and why Twitter’s influence has long surpassed its financial value.

Why do you think Elon Musk is buying Twitter?

I assume it’s because he has some genuine set of political and social beliefs about how Twitter should be run, and he feels like it isn’t being run that way. I also think that he gets a lot of pleasure and utility out of tweeting and wants it to be optimized for his use. The value of his company is enhanced by his being a very strange public figure on Twitter, and so he clearly sees a lot of value in tweeting, and probably wants to own that for himself.

Watch someone else use their iPhone for a few minutes, and you’ll quickly discover that they do a lot of things quite differently than you. You might discover some interactions you’ve never seen before, and you probably have a lot of suggestions for them.

It’s not surprising that the average iPhone user doesn’t use many of its best features. Modern smartphones have grown into enormously powerful and complex devices, and unless you pay close attention, you’re going to be simply unaware of all they can do. So let’s learn some new ones. Here are 10 iPhone tips and features that a surprisingly large percentage of users seem to be completely unaware of. These tips should work on most modern iPhones (those made within the last few years) and assume that you’re running at least iOS 15.
