Ten years ago, I was almost 60 pounds more than I am now.
I had cut my hair short, added a few highlights and really had this frumpy vibe going on. I had two kids at the time, ages 6 and 2. I was trying to be taken seriously as a good mommy and had let myself go. I was eating a ridiculous amount of sugar. I cared way too much about what other women thought of me. I formed new friendships with the moms from school and they frequently revolved around food. I hated the way I looked, but I fit in. After seeing the pictures from a trip to Disney with my family, I wondered how I let it happen. I knew I was wearing a size 14 and at five feet tall, it looked like I was wearing an even bigger size. I had a double chin and knew if I didn’t stop this weight train, I’d be even bigger.

ABC News reporter Elizabeth Vargas has publicly acknowledged that she’s an alcoholic, and said it took her years to admit it.
In an interview aired Friday on “Good Morning America,” Vargas said hiding her problem from others was exhausting.
“Even to admit it to myself was admitting, I thought, that I was a failure,” said Vargas, who noted that she had reported several “20/20” specials on drinking yet couldn’t acknowledge her own alcohol dependency.
She said she had suffered panic attacks since she was a child.
“I dealt with that anxiety, and with the stress that the anxiety brought, by starting to drink,” she said.
Her go-to drink was wine which, increasingly during her adulthood, she used to manage her anxiety and stress. Her drinking “slowly escalated and got worse and worse,” she said.

Every now and then our bodies like to tell us, in no uncertain terms, to stop and take note. A common cold politely tells us to back off when we’re pushing too hard. More serious illness can arrive as a “canary down the mine shaft”, signalling the need to quit the toxic job or leave that relationship that’s run your spirit into a cul-de-sac. Some of us get the message too late. Some of us are lucky enough to get our wake-up call just in time.
Five years ago, I was keeping myself frantically busy editing Cosmopolitan magazine. I was running over 30 miles a week and had just competed in a 24-hour mountain bike race. Sleep? I only needed four or five hours a night, and I propped myself up on a rotating cycle of black coffee in the morning and red wine at night. I was burning my rechargeable, ever-ready candle at both ends in the most spectacular of fashions. And getting away with it.
But then my body collapsed.

Quick, answer this question: What’s the first food you think of when you think of bodybuilders? More than likely, your answer was “meat,” because, after all, we’ve always learned protein is the key to building big muscles. And who hasn’t jealously pictured those buff guys at the gym wolfing down burger after burger?
But as this PETA ad shows, it’s not always meat, or animal products at all, that create a body that lifts hundreds of pounds at a time.

Saturday night could have been a moment for Sam Berns to celebrate — standing in the middle of Gillette Stadium, flanked by some of his beloved New England Patriots, and no doubt cheered heartily by the nearly 70,000 fans surrounding him.
But it wasn’t to be.
Instead of having Berns as an honorary captain in their NFL playoff with the Indianapolis Colts, the Patriots held a moment of silence for the young man who inspired them and many others as he lived with progeria, which causes premature, accelerated aging.
“Do it for Sammy!” one man yelled, piercing the quiet, in video of the ceremony on Boston.com.
Berns died Friday evening due to complications from the rare genetic disease, according to the Progeria Research Foundation.

In the modern world — when technological advances and information overload have left many of us with a desire to get back to basics — the need for ancient wisdom may be more important than ever before.
Ancient health and healing secrets are making something of a resurgence, and for good reason. The ancient Greeks asked the big questions about what it means to live a good life, and some of their theories on ethics and happiness have been backed by modern science. Thousands of years ago, Indian sages developed a system for stilling the thoughts that’s now practiced across America. The early Maya civilizations, too, developed healing systems that have influenced holistic healthcare to this day.

If you don’t snooze, you lose. Skimping on sleep can wreak havoc from head to toe. In fact, one study published last year showed that just one week of sleeping fewer than six hours a night resulted in changes to more than 700 genes. That’s alarming news, considering nearly half of Americans don’t bank the recommended seven or more hours of shut-eye a night, according to a recent survey.

Health authorities in western Mexico said Thursday they have detected a probable case of flesh lesions due to the drug Krokodil, often referred to as “the poor man’s heroin.”
The head of the council on addictions in the western state of Jalisco, Dr. Enrico Sotelo, said the patient is a 17-year-old woman who is a resident of Houston, Texas. She came to Mexico to visit the Pacific coast resort city of Puerto Vallarta, where she has relatives, in November. Soon after, she checked into a local health clinic for digestive problems, and it was there that doctors detected the flesh lesions.
Sotelo, who in accordance with privacy guidelines did not reveal the patient’s name, said she told authorities she used the drug in Houston. Her current condition is unknown because she did not return to the health clinic there for any further treatment.
“She acquired this problem with Krokodil in Houston, not here in Puerto Vallarta,” said Sotelo, who in any case has implemented an educational program to warn about the drug’s ill effects.

Lizzie Velasquez is one of three known people in the world who suffers from a rare syndrome, which prevents her from gaining weight and has caused blindness in her right eye. But the 24-year-old consistently redefines what it means to be beautiful.
Some experts believe the Texas native has some form of Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome, a condition that causes accelerated aging and fat loss from the face and body, even though Velasquez eats about 60 small meals a day, the Telegraph reported.
Less empathetic people have found more odious labels for Velasquez’s condition.
When Velasquez was in high school, she discovered a video of herself on YouTube that was titled “World’s Ugliest Woman.” It had garnered millions of views.
