Walmart’s Ice Cream Sandwiches Don’t Melt In The Sun

Last we checked, ice cream is supposed to melt if it isn’t kept chilled.

But Walmart’s store-brand ice cream sandwiches don’t even melt in the sun, according to a report from WCPO Cincinnati.

The discovery was made by a local mom, Christie Watson, who noticed that a Great Value ice cream sandwich her son left out on their patio table hadn’t fully melted — even though it had been sitting out for 12 hours on an 80-degree day. Watson left a second ice cream sandwich out overnight with the same results, WCPO reports.

How a Paralyzed Man Moved His Fingers With His Mind

Ian Burkhart had barely finished his freshman year of college when he broke his neck.

Standing on top of a cliff in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, which overlooked an orange sandbar jutting into the Atlantic Ocean, he dove hands-first toward the deceptively shallow water below.

“It happened so fast. There was this loud snap,” he says.

The impact with the sandbar broke his vertebrae at what’s called the C5 level, paralyzing his body from the elbows down. He spent the next four months recovering. Doctors told him he’d never be able to use his arms again.

Ian Burkhart shares a smile with Chad Bouton, research leader from Battelle. Bouton and his team at Battelle pioneered the Neurobridge technology, working closely with doctors from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, which allowed Burkhart to become the first patient ever to move his paralyzed hand with his own thoughts.

Protecting the heart from cancer therapy

Battling cancer can have long-term effects on the heart.

Treating cancer isn’t yet a precise science. Although doctors are getting better at targeting tumors, there’s still no magic bullet that homes in on cancer cells and destroys them without risking collateral damage to other parts of the body. The outward signs of off-target destruction include classic side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy such as hair loss, nausea, and fatigue. But there can be silent inner damage, too, sometimes to the heart and arteries. These injuries can appear immediately during therapy; other times they don’t surface for years.

“Important advances in our ability to fight cancer over the last few decades have translated into improved survival,” says Dr. Erica L. Mayer, an oncologist at Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. “But we are also learning that many of these lifesaving therapies have the potential to affect the heart and other parts of the body.”

Once relegated to the back burner, the late effects of cancer care are gradually getting more attention. One turning point was the publication in 2005 of From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition. This influential report from the Institute of Medicine put a spotlight on the disjointed care often received by the 12 million-plus cancer survivors in the United States after their cancer treatment has ended.

Protein May Hold the Key to Who Gets Alzheimer’s

It is one of the big scientific mysteries of Alzheimer’s disease: Why do some people whose brains accumulate the plaques and tangles so strongly associated with Alzheimer’s not develop the disease?

Now, a series of studies by  suggests a possible answer, one that could lead to new treatments if confirmed by other research.

The memory and thinking problems of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, which affect an estimated seven million Americans, may be related to a failure in the brain’s stress response system, the new research suggests. If this system is working well, it can protect the brain from abnormal Alzheimer’s proteins; if it gets derailed, critical areas of the brain start degenerating.

I know you’d like to think that your shit don’t stink, but if you lean a little bit closer, you might learn a little bit more about your health.

It’s true: While you might be the type to flush it and forget it, the next time you hit the loo to do your business, check out what’s in the bowl. The texture, shape and color of your dung can hint at things like dehydration, undetected illnesses and dietary deficiencies. If you’re excreting hard, pebbly poops, for example, you may be lacking in the fiber and fluid departments.
