Before she fell on hard times and got into trouble with the law, Ashley Diamond had a wardrobe of wigs named after her favorite divas. “Darling, hand me Aretha” or Mariah or Madonna, she would say to her younger sister when they glammed up to go out on the town.
Ms. Diamond, 36, had lived openly and outspokenly as a transgender woman since adolescence, much of that time defying the norms in this conservative Southern city.
But on the day she arrived at a Georgia prison intake center in 2012, the deliberate defeminizing of Ms. Diamond began. Ordered to strip alongside male inmates, she froze but ultimately removed her long hair and the Hannah Montana pajamas in which she had been taken into custody, she said. She hugged her rounded breasts protectively.

Before going to prison, Ashley Diamond lived as a woman.

Feet are a part of the anatomy many exercisers ignore while pounding the treadmill or honing a headstand, but fitness experts say they are the very foundation of physical well-being.
A quarter of the body’s bones are contained in the feet and ankles. It is where most movement begins and, much like a building’s foundation, it determines stability.
“The feet are perhaps the most neglected complex structure in the body,” said Katy Bowman, biomechanist and the author of “Whole Body Barefoot: Transitioning Well to Minimal Footwear.”

Broody, a very unhappy brain, is plagued by fear and self-doubt.
“Seeing others in pain, physical or emotional, fires his own pain network,” says Amit Sood, M.D., professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic and chair of the Mayo Mind Body Initiative, in a new video “starring” Broody. “His imaginary fears cause him real damage.”
With the help of a friend and a short course in happiness, Broody learns why cultivating deeper gratitude and compassion can make all the difference.

People with type 2 diabetes may have less depression and fewer hunger pains if they opt for a big breakfast and lunch rather than six smaller meals throughout the day, suggests a new study.
“Eating large breakfasts and lunches may be more beneficial than the usual snacking model,” said Dr. Hana Kahleova, the study’s lead author from the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Prague.
“However, further larger-scale, long-term studies are needed before offering clear recommendations,” she told Reuters Health in an email.

Never underestimate the power of positive thinking.
In a YouTube video he posted on Wednesday, 20-year-old Peter Foster promotes a message of optimism, despite a large number of disabilities he lives with on a daily basis. Foster has undergone 40-60 surgeries, he wrote on his YouTube page, to treat over 25 diagnoses. But, despite all that, he keeps looking forward.
“I’m still loving life because it could always be worse,” he says.

You’ve probably gone a few days without showering — maybe a week. But let’s say you didn’t bathe for days on end — as in you use no soap, no water, no nothing.
What would happen?
You’re likely to get seriously stinky, for sure (though you may be surprised to learn that sweat itself is odorless).
And that’s only one of the things you’d have to worry about. Just check out the video above to find out about some of the more harmful — even potentially deadly — side effects of eliminating your hygiene routine.

When life gets busy, one of the first things to go in a relationship is sex. Couples are too tired, too full, too stressed, too distracted. Simply put: not in the mood.
We get it — there are a million and one legitimate reasons not to have sex tonight, tomorrow or the day after that. But there are plenty of couples out there who are doing the deed five, six, seven or more times a week. We recently asked married HuffPost readers who have sex every night (barring things like sickness, business trips or other extenuating circumstances, of course) how it has improved their lives and relationships.

We’ve long known that children from affluent families get a head start that can translate into a long-lasting advantage, especially when it comes to academic achievement. Now, scientists have found what may be part of the explanation: Children who grow up in higher-income families appear to have larger brains.
.
Researchers from nine universities across the country, led by neuroscientists at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Columbia University Medical Center, conducted a major new study of the effects of family income and parental education on child and adolescent brain development.
“We’ve known for a long time that kids from lower-income or disadvantaged families don’t do as well in school and have more difficulties on standardized tests,” Dr. Elizabeth Sowell, director of the Developmental Cognitive Neuroimaging Laboratory at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, told The Huffington Post. “We know that the brain is driving cognition and behavior, so there must be some difference in the brain. This is the largest study to look at things like family income and the size of the brain.”
