Columbine school shooting 20 years later: Victims’ families reflect on what has changed and what hasn’t

Twenty years later, Dawn Anna still saves a seat for her daughter, Lauren Townsend, when she goes to the movies, knowing full well that she won’t show.

Twenty years later, Frank DeAngelis’ morning mantra consists of reciting the names of 12 students and a teacher he will never see again.

Twenty years later, Tom Mauser literally walks in the size 10½ shoes of his slain son, Daniel, whenever he’s called on to speak about the unspeakable.

For them and for too many others, the massacre at Columbine High School is both past and ever-present, a wound that never really heals because every time somebody with a high-powered weapon unleashes a bloodbath at a school, the scab gets ripped off.

Their Parents Stayed Together ‘For The Kids.’ Here’s How It Felt.

.

There has been significant research exploring the emotional effect of divorce on younger children, but relatively little is known about what the decision to divorce as soon as grown children leave home does — on top of how those children have already been shaped by their parents’ marriage for years.

Some parents wait to divorce until their children are grown because they are determined not to split up in their formative years or when they are teenagers, which is already an emotionally tumultuous time. Other empty nesters suddenly come face-to-face with the prospect of decades with a partner they’d grown apart from, particularly given our increased life expectancy.

No matter the reasons why they stuck it out, there are reasons to look closely at the effect of divorce on older children. Divorce rates in the United States are declining except among adults 50 and older. The divorce rate for that demographic has basically doubled since the 1990s, which means the number of Americans who were older children or adults when their parents split is also on the rise.

Tim Conway, who made generations of Americans laugh on TV shows such as “McHale’s Navy” and “The Carol Burnett Show,” died Tuesday morning, his publicist said.

He was 85.

Conway won multiple Emmy Awards, most recently in 2008 for his role as a guest star on the comedy show “30 Rock” in which he played Bucky Bright, an old, long-forgotten television star.

The actor’s big break in Hollywood came on “McHale’s Navy,” when Conway was cast to play Ensign Charles Parker. He was nominated for a best supporting actor Emmy in 1963.

The Amazing Psychology of Japanese Train Stations

.

It is a scene that plays out each weekday morning across Tokyo. Suit-clad office workers, gaggles of schoolchildren, and other travelers gamely wend their way through the city’s sprawling rail stations.

To the casual observer, it is chaos; commuters packed shoulder-to-shoulder amid the constant clatter of arriving and departing trains. But a closer look reveals something more beneath the surface: A station may be packed, yet commuters move smoothly along concourses and platforms. Platforms are a whirl of noisy activity, yet trains maintain remarkable on-time performance. Indeed, the staggering punctuality of the Japanese rail system occasionally becomes the focus of international headlines—as on May 11, when West Japan Railways issued a florid apology after one of its commuter trains left the station 25 seconds early.

Tokyo is home to the world’s busiest train stations, with the capital’s rail operators handling a combined 13 billion passenger trips annually. Ridership of that volume requires a deft blend of engineering, planning, and psychology. Beneath the bustle, unobtrusive features are designed to unconsciously manipulate passenger behavior, via light, sound, and other means. Japan’s boundless creativity in this realm reflects the deep consideration given to public transportation in the country.

This Is What Happens to Your Body on a Thru-Hike

.

In 2016, my wife and I hiked the Colorado Trail, a 486-mile, high-altitude trek from Denver to Durango. While it’s a challenging hike (only about 150 people complete the trail each year), the Colorado Trail Foundation says many hikers finish in four to six weeks.

The hike ended up taking us 29 days, though two of those were zeros, as they’re called—rest days spent resupplying in town. That’s an average of 18 miles a day for the 27 days we hiked. Short days tended to be around 15 miles, which took us eight to ten hours, but we sometimes hiked as many as 25 miles in a day.

I was curious to know what hiking every day for a month would do to my body. Before we headed to Colorado, I weighed myself at home, monitored my pulse for several weeks with a Polar watch, had my doctor run blood tests, and completed a metabolic efficiency test at Real Rehab, in Seattle, to see how my body was utilizing fat and carbohydrates for fuel during exercise. When I got home from the hike, I ran the tests again. The differences in the results were pretty striking.
