A gunman killed at least three people and injured at least 15 more after opening fire Sunday at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, law enforcement officials said.
An unidentified suspect was also shot and killed by officers, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said during a news conference Sunday night.
The shooter appeared to cut through a fence to gain entry to the festival before opening fire, Smithee said. Authorities killed him “less than a minute” after he began firing on festivalgoers using some kind of a rifle.
Smithee said a second individual may have been involved in the shooting in some way, but that authorities had no one else in custody. A manhunt is currently underway.
“I have no idea what the motive is at this point,” Smithee added, calling the event a “nightmare.”

Although diet and exercise programs usually dominate the weight loss headlines, research suggests that your sleep habits may be just as important. The latest piece of research showing a link between sleep habits and weight gain appeared in the June 10, 2019 issue of JAMA Internal Medicine. This paper found that exposure to artificial lighting at night predicted weight gain over five years of follow-up among more than 43,000 women. This article, however, is merely the latest of hundreds of scientific papers from the last decade indicating that poor sleep makes it easier to gain weight and harder to lose weight. Because there is now such a large and diverse body of research on the metabolic effects of sleep, many people find it difficult to understand the practical implications.

Police will canvass in Gillam and Fox Lake Cree Nation over the next 72 hours, Cpl. Julie Courchaine, the RCMP Manitoba spokeswoman, said Friday at a press conference.

The search for Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, has taken authorities about 2,000 miles across Canada’s rural north — from British Columbia to Manitoba — in a case with victims with three nationalities.

“Our investigators are also exploring the possibility that the suspects may have inadvertently received assistance in leaving the area,” Courchaine said. “To restate, there have been no confirmed sightings outside of the Gillam area, however we remain open to the possibility.”

After his first day of classes, the biology major collapsed at home on the dining room table, the room spinning around him.
It was 1999. The symptoms soon became intense and untreatable. His heart would race, he felt weak and he frequently got dizzy. Lindsay could walk only about 50 feet at a time and couldn’t stand for more than a few minutes.
“Even lying on the floor didn’t feel like it was low enough,” he said.
The former high school track athlete had dreamed of becoming a biochemistry professor or maybe a writer for “The Simpsons.”
Instead, he would spend the next 11 years mostly confined to a hospital bed in his living room in St. Louis, hamstrung by a mysterious ailment.

Think about the last time you said you wanted to do something. Maybe you wanted to eat healthier, write every day in a journal, or declutter your home. But despite your sincere desire to achieve the goal, you’ve gotten no further than a few steps along the path. Why not?
While you might be tempted to say it’s because of laziness or a lack of willpower, New York City cognitive psychologist and coach Amanda Crowell has another name for this phenomenon: defensive failure.
Crowell offers an example from her own life to illustrate. Growing up, she loathed exercising; she was fond of saying “I will run when a bear is chasing me and never before then.” This aversion “went on for another 34 years,” she says in a TEDxHarrisburg talk, “until I woke up one day with an infant … and a back that hurt all the time.” If she wanted to be the kind of mom she aspired to be — “a mother who can chase around her kids at the park or pick her kids up and swing them around,” as she put it — she needed to get in shape.

At the turn of the 20th century, prominent physicians who were trying to understand where mental illness comes from seized on a new theory: autointoxication. Intestinal microbes, these doctors suggested, are actually dangerous to their human hosts. They have a way of inducing “fatigue, melancholia, and the neuroses,” as a historical article in the journal Gut Pathogens recounts.
“The control of man’s diet is readily accomplished, but mastery over his intestinal bacterial flora is not,” wrote a doctor named Bond Stow in the Medical Record Journal of Medicine and Surgery in 1914. “The innumerable examples of autointoxication that one sees in his daily walks in life is proof thereof … malaise, total lack of ambition so that every effort in life is a burden, mental depression often bordering upon melancholia.”
Stow went on to say that “a battle royal must be fought” with these intestinal germs.

Sixteen U.S. Marines were arrested Thursday on human smuggling and drug allegations at a base in Southern California, military officials said.
The Marines were arrested at Camp Pendleton based on information gained from a previous human smuggling investigation, the Marine Corps said in a statement Thursday. At least eight other Marines have also been questioned about their involvement in alleged drug offenses.
None of the arrested or detained Marines were a part of the Southwest Border Support mission, according to the military’s statement.
