On Monday, The New York Times published an article on murder rates that was misleading at best, and fear mongering at worst.
“Murder Rates Rising Sharply in Many U.S. Cities,” the headline screamed.
The lede was just as alarming. It spoke of “a startling rise in murders” this year in cities “across the nation,” chief among them Milwaukee, where the increase was said to be “precipitous” — 104 homicides in 2015 thus far, way above the 86 reported for all of 2014.

Thousands flock to the Sequoia National Park each year to view the majestic trees that tower high above the forest.
But below, on the forest floor, there are signs of struggle as many Sequoia trees are shedding more leaves and foliage during the fourth year California’s devastating drought.
And the best way to analyze the health of the trees is to climb them, which is just what biologist Anthony Ambrose does.

Pope Francis will allow Roman Catholic priests to absolve women who have had abortions if they seek forgiveness during the upcoming Holy Year of Mercy, the Vatican announced Tuesday.
The pontiff said he will allow priests “discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it” during the special year, beginning December 8.
“I am well aware of the pressure that has led [women] to this decision,” he wrote in the announcement. “I know that it is an existential and moral ordeal.”

Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday once again laid out the Obama administration’s case for its recently concluded agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program, less than an hour after it became clear that the deal will survive congressional review later this month.
“Every threat to Israel and to our friends in the region would be more dangerous if Iran were permitted to have a nuclear weapon,” Kerry said during a Philadelphia speech in which he argued that the July agreement will effectively monitor Iranian nuclear activity and prevent Tehran from obtaining such a weapon. In return for agreeing to what the Obama administration describes as the most stringent set of nuclear inspections in history, Iran will receive billions of dollars in revenue that it had been denied because of a global sanctions push led by Washington.
Kerry’s comments were the first public remarks by a high-ranking Obama administration…

Hold on to something,” Jim Tennant warned as he fired up his tractor. We lurched down a rutted dirt road past the old clapboard farmhouse where he grew up. Jim still calls it “the home place,” although its windows are now boarded up and the outhouse is crumbling into the field.
At 72, Jim is so slight that he nearly disappears into his baggy plaid shirt. But he drives his tractor like a dirt bike. We sped past the caved-in hog pen and skidded down a riverbank. The tractor tipped precariously toward the water, slamming into a fallen tree, but Jim just laughed.
When we had gone as far as the tractor could take us, Jim climbed off and squeezed through a barbed-wire fence. On the other side was a lush field teeming with crabapple and sycamore, and beyond that, the muddy trickle of water, known as Dry Run Creek, that has brought Jim’s family so much heartache. “This is what Dry Run looks like in the wet season,” Jim told me. “Summer grazing was in the hollow up there—before they destroyed everything, at least.”

Emotional video of a golden retriever comforting a patient just 24 hours before her dying day is warming hearts everywhere.
“I’m still not quite sure how it spread like wildfire, but I understand that it’s so touching to people,” said Tracy Calhoun, a registered nurse with Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in Albany, Oregon. “From across the world, the {social media] comments are amazing. Your stories make your life meaningful, so at the end of life, people want to share their stories — what their animals did when their loved ones were dying.
“That’s why I want to read all of them.”

Once upon a time, in the Pony Expresso cafe in Seattle, a man and a woman began to experience the long-mysterious but increasingly scientifically investigated thing we call love. The first stage is called “limerence.” This is the spine-tingling, heart-twisting, can’t-stop-staring feeling, when it seems as though the world stops whirling and time itself bows down and pauses before the force of your longing. The man, a then-44-year-old University of Washington research psychologist named John Gottman, was drawn to the woman’s wild mane of black curly hair and her creativity: She was an amateur musician and painter as well as a psychologist like himself. The woman, a then-35-year-old named Julie Schwartz, who’d placed a personal ad in the Seattle Weekly that John had answered, was turned on by John’s humble little car—voted the ugliest vehicle in the University of Washington faculty parking lot—and his expansive curiosity. He read physics and math and history and kept a little spiral-bound notebook in his pocket that he used to jot down things his companions said that captivated him.

The 39th president had learned in May that he had a “small mass” on his liver and decided to have the elective surgery to remove it on August 3. At that time the Carter Center, his nonprofit organization, released a statement saying “the prognosis is excellent for a full recovery.”
But by August 19, a Carter Center statement told a different story. Tests after the liver surgery revealed the cancer was melanoma. An MRI revealed there were four spots of melanoma on his brain. Doctors said the small spots were about 2 millimeters in size.

In Calgary, between the soccer practices and the hours at her accounting job and the potlucks with the neighbors, Christianne Boudreau spent every spare minute watching Islamic State videos, her nose pressed up against the computer screen.
She sat in the basement of her middle-class home in her middle-class suburb, a bare room that once belonged to her eldest son, Damian, and watched men posturing with big guns like teenagers. She watched firefights. She watched executions. But Boudreau barely registered any of the bloodshed. She was focused on the faces behind the balaclavas, trying to spot her son’s eyes.
In Copenhagen, Karolina Dam was wild with fear. Her son Lukas had been in Syria for seven months. Three days earlier, she received word that he had been injured outside Aleppo, but she was convinced that he was dead. Sitting alone that evening, nervously puffing on a vaporizer, she couldn’t stop herself from sending a Viber message into the ether. “Lukas,” she wrote, “I love you so much my beloved son. I miss you and want to hug and smell you. Hold your soft hands in mine and smile at you.”
