A Paralympic hopeful plans for running in Brazil next year are back on track after fans on the Internet got together to replace stolen prosthetics.
“It’s really good to be back running on my new leg and I’m enjoying every bit of it,” said athlete Paul Peterson.
Peterson, 22, had his first chance Tuesday to try his new prosthetic running legs after thieves on June 3 broke into his Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment and stole almost everything, including his competition medals and three of his custom-fit running blades.

When Miles Jai Thomas arrived at a party at the Craig Ranch North Community Pool in McKinney, Texas, on Friday night, he said the pool was open to everyone who’d been invited — until a security guard showed up and removed black partygoers from the area.
“Then he started making up rules to keep us out,” Thomas, 15, told The Huffington Post.
A white woman at the pool started making racist comments, Thomas said, such as telling black teens at the party to get used to the bars outside the pool because that’s all they were going to see.

A grand jury has indicted a former South Carolina police officer in the April shooting of an unarmed black man, the prosecutor announced on Monday.
Former North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager, 33, has been charged with murder in the death of Walter Scott, 50.
“I think the people of the 9th circuit elected me to be accountable to them, and that’s what we intend to do,” Charleston County Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said during a news conference following the announcement of the indictment Monday. “They have to know they have someone prosecuting the case who is accountable to them.”

Every week, The WorldPost asks an expert to shed light on a topic that’s making headlines around the world. Today, we speak with investigative journalist Anabel Hernández.
As one of Mexico’s leading investigative journalists, Anabel Hernández has dedicated the past decade to investigating her country’s drug war — one of the most dangerous projects a reporter could ask for. Her 2010 book Los señores del narco, translated into English as Narcoland, detailed the extensive government corruption that allowed Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and his Sinaloa cartel to become one of the most powerful criminal enterprises in the world.
Working in partnership with journalist Steve Fisher at The Investigative Reporting Program (IRP) at U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism , Hernández has also been at the forefront of one of the leading investigative reports into the case of the missing 43 students from the Ayotzinapa teachers college who were attacked by Mexican police in September.

Lethal wounds on an ancient human skull may point to one of the oldest cases of murder on record, a new study reports.
The skull, 430,000 years old, was found deep in an underground cave system at Sima de los Huesos, an archaeological site in northern Spain. The small chamber is accessible only through a vertical shaft 43 feet deep.
Composed of about 50 fragments, the nearly complete skull is described in the current issue of the journal PLOS One.

Researchers report that the two penetrating lesions on the skull were likely caused by repeated blows from a single instrument. Javier Trueba/Madrid Scientific Films

A body found in the Hudson River on Saturday could be that of the New York kayaker who went missing last month.
Forensic scientist Michael Archer told NBC New York that the body is believed to be that of 46-year-old Vincent Viafore, who disappeared when his kayak overturned on April 19 in choppy water near Bannerman Island, 50 miles north of New York City.
Viafore’s fiancée, Angelika Graswald, 35, reported him missing after the pair went kayaking in separate vessels. But authorities now believe she was responsible for his death. She has been charged with second-degree murder.

A Michigan teen pleaded guilty to charges of murder and attempted criminal sexual conduct in the attempted rape and slaying of his cousin last year.
In court Monday, Joshua Keyzer, now 16, admitted to killing his 21-year-old cousin, Kassandra Keyzer, at his grandmother’s home in Wayland Township, Michigan, on June 21, 2014.
Kassandra, the mother of a 2-year-old boy and a student at Aquinas College, was engaged to be married when her cousin attacked her, tried to rape her, and cut her throat with a knife. Although he was only 15 at the time, Joshua Keyzer was charged as an adult in her murder.

Several people were killed Sunday afternoon in a shootout between rival biker gangs outside the Twin Peaks Restaurant in Waco, Texas.
Waco police say eight were killed, another died in the hospital, and 18 were injured as hundreds of bikers from several factions skirmished just after noon in the Central Texas Marketplace.
“There are dead people still there, there is blood everywhere … There are bullet holes in vehicles all over the parking lot,” Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton said at a press conference.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been sentenced to death for committing the Boston Marathon bombing, one of the worst acts of terrorism to take place on U.S. soil.
The same seven-woman, five-man jury that found the 21-year-old naturalized American citizen guilty in the April 15, 2013, attack reached the verdict after deliberating for more than 14 hours over three days. The only alternative sentence was life without parole.
The jury sentenced Tsarnaev to death on 6 of the 17 counts, including use of a weapon of mass destruction, bombing of a public place and malicious destruction of property. A death sentence required a unanimous vote from the jury members, but if they had failed to agree on it, the life sentence would have been imposed automatically.

On a frigid day in November 1969, Father Joseph Maskell, the chaplain of Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, called a student into his office and suggested they go for a drive. When the final bell rang at 2:40 p.m., Jean Hargadon Wehner, a 16-year-old junior at the all-girls Catholic school, followed the priest to the parking lot and climbed into the passenger seat of his light blue Buick Roadmaster.
It was not unusual for Maskell to give students rides home or take them to doctor’s appointments during the school day. The burly, charismatic priest, then 30 years old, had been the chief spiritual and psychological counselor at Keough for two years and was well-known in the community. Annual tuition at Keough was just $200, which attracted working-class families in deeply Catholic southwest Baltimore who couldn’t afford to send their daughters to fancier private schools. Many Keough parents had attended Maskell’s Sunday masses. He’d baptized their babies, and they trusted him implicitly.
