The number of U.S. criminals exonerated in 2014 climbed to a record high of 125, in part because of efforts by prosecutors willing to admit their offices made mistakes, according to a report released on Tuesday.
The states with the most exonerations last year were Texas, New York and Illinois, according to the National Registry of Exonerations, a project of the University of Michigan Law School. This was the first time the Registry, which has tracked exonerations since 1989, found more than 100 in a single year.
Evidence that frees a prisoner may include DNA linking another person to the crime and evidence of perjury. In one case, Ohio native Ricky Jackson spent 39 years in prison for murder – making him the longest-held U.S. prisoner to be exonerated. He was freed last November after the witness admitted he hadn’t seen the crime.

Cities across the Northeast mobilized snowplows and airlines canceled thousands of flights Monday as a potentially historic storm pushed its way up the Philadelphia-to-Boston corridor with what forecasters said could be up to 2 feet of snow.
More than 4,000 flights were canceled or delayed, schools planned to close early and a hospital in New York increased staff and outfitted its vehicles with snow traveling gear.
The National Weather Service said the nor’easter would bring heavy snow, powerful winds and widespread coastal flooding starting Monday and through Tuesday. A blizzard warning was issued for a 250-mile stretch of the Northeast, including New York and Boston.

The winds of political change are coursing through austerity-weary Greece, but a financial whirlwind may lurk round the corner.
Opinion polls ahead of Sunday’s closely-watched national election agree: The radical left opposition Syriza party, which has vowed to rewrite the terms of Greece’s international bailout, is poised to defeat Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ conservatives. To govern — in a historic first for the Greek left — it may need the backing of a smaller party, but most seem willing to oblige.
“I want this government to go. It has disappointed me,” said Babis Limnaios, 41, an Athens electrician who last voted in 2004 for the conservatives but will now back Syriza. “I want them to change everything — tax, health care, education.”

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) appeared to have pulled off a masterful political victory against the Obama administration Wednesday when he revealed that he had invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress on the dangers of the administration’s negotiations with Iran.
Coming a day after President Barack Obama threatened to veto new Iran-related sanctions legislation that he said could harm the negotiations, Boehner’s move looked like a smart way to reinforce support for such bills — a priority for the Republican-led Congress — by showing that the U.S.’s top ally in the region supported them.
Then things started to fall apart.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died, state television announced early Friday. He was 90.
Abdullah, who took power in 2005 after the death of his brother King Fahd, was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 31, state media reported at the time. After speculation about his health, all channels of Saudi TV on Friday began broadcasting recitations of the Quran. State television said King Abdullah died of pneumonia.
King Abdullah’s half-brother, Deputy Prime Minister Salman bin Abdul Aziz, was named as his successor. The 80-year-old former defense minister is one of the sons of Hassa Al Sudairi, who was thought to be the late king’s favorite wife. He and his brothers are known as the Sudairi Seven, and considered the inner circle of the country’s elite.

A network of anti-ISIS “commando cells” has carried out hundreds of guerrilla attacks in a city seized by the Islamist militants, Iraq’s vice president told NBC News.
Dubbed the “Mosul Liberation Battalions,” the little-known resistance movement has killed “a large number” of extremists through operations including sniper attacks, blasts using homemade bombs and raids on weapons-storage sites, according to Osama al-Nujaifi.
Battalion members include former military officers and tribesmen as well as students and local businessmen.

The NFL has determined that the New England Patriots used deflated footballs during its win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game on Sunday night, according to multiple reports.
Both ESPN and The Boston Globe reported late Tuesday that 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Patriots in the 45-7 victory were under-inflated. While league rules require footballs to be inflated to between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch, ESPN reported that the game balls were 2 pounds short.
However, NFL executive vice president for football operations Troy Vincent told The Associated Press the “investigation is currently underway and we’re still awaiting findings.”

Republican lawmakers are already signaling they will do what they can to block President Barack Obama’s pitch for tax increases on the wealthiest Americans.
Obama is making that pitch to a huge television audience in hopes of putting the new Republican Congress in the position of defending top income earners over the middle class.
As Obama continues to signal what he will propose during Tuesday’s State of the Union address, senior administration officials said during the weekend that he will call for raising the capital gains rate on top income earners and eliminating a tax break on inheritances. The revenue generated by those changes would fund new tax credits and other cost-saving measures for middle-class taxpayers, officials said.

The rich keep getting richer, and by next year, just a handful of the upper-class will have accumulated more than half of the world’s wealth.
A new report released on Monday by Oxfam warns that this deepening global inequality is unlike anything seen in recent years.
Using research from Credit Suisse and Forbes’ annual billionaires list, the anti-poverty charity was able to determine that the richest 1 percent of the world’s population currently controls 48 percent of the world’s total wealth.

Pope Francis’ confirmed Monday that his trip to the United States this fall will include stops in Washington and New York City, in addition to the previously announced visit to Philadelphia.
The pontiff told reporters he wishes he could enter the U.S. through the Mexican border “as a sign of brotherhood and of help to the immigrants,” but will probably just fly directly to the East Coast.
“You know that [to] go to Mexico without going to visit the Madonna [of Guadalupe] would be a drama. A war could break out,” he said, laughing. “I think there will only be those three cities. Later there will be time to go to Mexico.”
