Underlying the question of whether European leaders and the Greek state will be able to come to terms amid the financial crisis is one even more fundamental: Is there room in Europe for democracy?
In January, Greek voters elected a government on a platform of anti-austerity, one that argued further cuts would not just be cruel to a people already experiencing 25 percent unemployment, but economically backward as well. European leaders have spent the five months since then doing everything they can to drive that Greek government from power.
Europe’s modern experiment with democracy began with many fits and starts, but in recent years it seemed to cement itself. That appears to have been a mirage.

President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that the U.S. and Cuba have struck a deal to open embassies in each other’s capitals and re-establish diplomatic relations for the first time in half a century.
“The progress we make today is another demonstration we don’t have to be imprisoned by the past,” Obama said.
Obama emphasized that the U.S. and Cuba have some shared interests, such as strong anti-terrorism policies and disaster response. But he acknowledged that the two nations still have “very serious differences” on issues like free speech.

President Barack Obama this week will propose a plan to extend overtime pay to 5 million American workers who are currently excluded under federal law, according to sources.
.
The president will recommend updating overtime rules so that salaried workers who earn less than roughly $50,400 per year would be guaranteed time-and-a-half pay when they work more than 40 hours in a week. Under the current rules implemented by former President George W. Bush, salaried workers must earn less than $23,660 per year in order to be automatically eligible for overtime pay.
The president announced his intention to make overtime reforms last year, but the details of the plan have been kept secret until this week. The president is expected to discuss the proposal later this week during a visit to Wisconsin. Details of the proposal were first reported by Bloomberg.

With more than 1,300 officers fanned out across northern New York’s dense forest hunting for the remaining escapee who broke out of a maximum-security prison, a state trooper, alone in his car, spotted a jogger near a rain-soaked field two miles from the Canadian border.
“Hey, come over here,” Sgt. Jay Cook, a 21-year veteran called to the man, according to an account by New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico.
The jogger ignored him. Cook called out again.

Richard Matt, one of the two killers who escaped from an upstate New York prison three weeks ago, was shot and killed by a U.S. Customs and Border patrol tactical team during the manhunt Friday, police said.
The other escaped inmate, David Sweat, remains on the loose. Police believe Sweat could be nearby and continued to search for him Friday night.
Matt was shot dead at around 3:45 p.m. in a wooded area south of the town of Malone by a member of a U.S. Customs and Border patrol tactical team, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico told reporters Friday night.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday made marriage for same-sex couples legal nationwide, declaring that refusing to grant marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples violates the Constitution.
The landmark ruling will produce the most significant change in laws governing matrimony since the court struck down state bans on inter-racial marriage almost 50 years ago.
The majority opinion in the 5-4 decision was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy.

The Earth has entered its sixth mass extinction phase, a new study warns, and the time we have to avoid dramatic consequences is rapidly running out.
Vertebrates — which include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish — are disappearing at a rate 114 times faster than normal, according the study published Friday in the journal Science Advances. The study, led by Stanford, Princeton and the University of California-Berkeley, stated the number of vertebrate species that have gone extinct in the last century normally take 800 to 10,000 years to disappear under natural extinction rates.
“These estimates reveal an exceptionally rapid loss of biodiversity over the last few centuries, indicating that a sixth mass extinction is already under way,” the researchers wrote. The last such extinction was 65 million years ago, The Telegraph noted, when dinosaurs were wiped off the face of the planet.

The latest and possibly the last serious effort to cripple Obamacare through the courts has just failed.
On Thursday, for the second time in three years, the Supreme Court rejected a major lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act — thereby preserving the largest expansion in health coverage since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid half a century ago.
The stakes of the case, King v. Burwell, were enormous. Had the plaintiffs prevailed, millions of people who depend upon the Affordable Care Act for insurance would have lost financial assistance from the federal government. Without that money, most of them would have had to give up coverage altogether. And the loss of so many customers would have forced insurers to raise premiums, seriously disrupting state insurance markets.

Chanting “Bring it down!”, hundreds of people rallied Tuesday at the South Carolina State House to demand that the Confederate battle flag be removed from the grounds.
They pushed for state lawmakers to follow a call by Gov. Nikki Haley to remove the flag after a white gunman slaughtered nine black people, including a state senator, at a church in Charleston last week.
“It’s time for South Carolina to get past its history,” said J. Elliott Summey, president of the Charleston County Council. “History belongs in a place. It belongs in a museum, not on sovereign ground.”
