Early aerial images of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria here show waterlogged neighborhoods, roofs peeled off homes and shopping centers, and once-lush landscape denuded of leaves from a storm that officials say has left at least six people dead.

Three of the fatalities occurred in the municipality of Utuado as a result of mud slides, the U.S. territory’s public safety department said in a statement. Two others died in flooding in Toa Baja, and one other person died in Bayamón when a panel struck him in the head. More deaths are likely to be reported in the coming hours and days, officials said.

“We are aware of other reports of fatalities that have transpired by unofficial means but we cannot confirm them,” said the secretary of the department of public safety, Héctor M. Pesquera.

Jake LaMotta, ‘Raging Bull’ in and Out of the Ring, Dies at 95

Jake LaMotta, boxing’s “Raging Bull,” who brawled his way to the middleweight boxing championship in a life of unbridled fury — within the ring and outside it — that became the subject of an acclaimed film, died on Tuesday in Aventura, Fla., near Miami. He was 95.

His longtime fiancée, Denise Baker, said he died of pneumonia at Palm Garden of Aventura, a nursing Home and rehabilitation facility, where he had been under hospice care.

A “good-for-nothing bum kid” with a terrible temper, as he later described himself, LaMotta learned to box in an upstate New York reformatory, where he had been sent for attempted burglary. Having gone undefeated as an amateur after his release, he turned pro in 1941 and unleashed his enmity on dozens of ring opponents.

At Mexican School Hit by Quake, Heartbreak and Dwindling Hope

Gustavo López recognized the boy’s clothes first.

His tiny frame, pulled from the wreckage, lay over the jagged pieces of what remained of the school. It was his 7-year-old son.

He sat in shock for hours, quietly trying to maintain strength for his 9-year-old daughter, who had escaped the school unharmed. He wondered how to tell her that her younger brother, also named Gustavo, was dead — one of at least 30 children who perished at the Enrique Rebsámen school after it collapsed in the earthquake that devastated Mexico on Tuesday, killing more than 200 people.

Mr. López waited there for his cousin, Mauricio, who loved the boy and often took him on bike rides and to the movies. By the time Mauricio arrived a few hours later, hundreds of medical personnel, rescuers, volunteers and families were racing around, trying to unearth students still buried in the rubble.

For the first time, the Marine Corps plans to have a female infantry officer among its ranks

The Marine Corps plans to soon assign a female infantry officer to a combat unit, a historic first, following her anticipated graduation from the service’s grueling Infantry Officer Course, service officials said Thursday.

The lieutenant and her male colleagues completed a three-week combat exercise that includes live fire at the service’s training center at Twentynine Palms, Calif., on Wednesday, the service said in a statement released Thursday after The Washington Post first reported the news. That marked the final graded requirement in the 13-week course, which is widely seen as some of the toughest training in the military, and typically sees about 25 percent all students washing out.

The woman is the first of three dozen women who have attempted the course to pass. She is expected to lead a platoon of about 40 infantry Marines in a service that is often seen as the most resistant to full gender integration in the military. It has grappled this year with a scandal in which more than a 1,000 current Marines and veterans were investigated for sharing photographs of nude female colleagues online.

The one major reason Graham-Cassidy could pass

.

When it comes to the Graham-Cassidy health care bill, there is one thing Republicans agree on right now: It’s their last shot to repeal and replace Obamacare.

That may be all the motivation they need to pass it.
.
In recent days, an intense operation to sell the bill to few key holdouts has gotten underway. But most of those conversations are happening under the radar.

On Wednesday, the bill’s sponsors, Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, briefed Alaska Sens. Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski. Arizona Sen. John McCain, another holdout, is also under pressure to get to “yes,” with Graham, a close friend, taking the lead on trying to convince him.

Trump announces new economic sanctions targeting North Korea over nuclear program

President Trump announced an executive order Thursday to grant additional authority to the Treasury Department to enforce economic sanctions on North Korea and foreign companies and individuals that do business with the rogue nation in Northeast Asia.

The president also said that Chinese President Xi Jinping had ordered Chinese banks to cease conducting business with North Korean entities. Trump called the move “very bold” and “somewhat unexpected,” and he praised Xi.

“North Korea’s nuclear program is a grave threat to peace and security in our world, and it is unacceptable that others financially support this criminal, rogue regime,” Trump said in brief public remarks during a meeting with the leaders of South Korea and Japan to discuss strategy to confront Pyongyang over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Indians set modern MLB record with 22nd straight win on dramatic walk-off

Coming into Thursday night, the stakes were pretty clear for the Cleveland Indians: Another win — No. 22 in a row — would set the modern record for an MLB winning streak, passing the 1935 Chicago Cubs. But a loss to the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland’s magical run would be over.

Oh, but the Indians had a little more magic left in them.

The Indians won a nail-biter against the Royals, 3-2 in 10 innings, a game that began to feel like October as the Indians mounted a ninth-inning rally. Then in the 10th inning, when Jay Bruce knocked a walk-off single into right, it was proven — the Indians wouldn’t be denied a piece of baseball history. They hadn’t lost since Aug. 23 and they wouldn’t on Thursday night. Sorry, Cubs, this is Cleveland’s record now.

Incredibly, it was the Indians’ first walk-off win their 22-game streak. Gotta keep it fresh, right? The Tribe also managed to clinch a postseason berth later in the evening when the Angels lost to the Astros. Cleveland’s main target, of course, is the AL Central crown. Their magic number for that is three.

Obama swipes at, but doesn’t name, Trump

In a rare public appearance eight months after leaving office, former President Barack Obama took shots at his successor’s plans on health care and foreign policy but didn’t criticize him by name.

In a speech and question-and-answer session that closely resembled the types of appearances he favored as president, Obama called repeated efforts to repeal his signature health care law “frustrating.” He defended institutions like the United Nations as essential to collective diplomacy. And he warned against nationalism and xenophobia, saying they threaten to stymie progress that has made the world more livable.
.
“It may be frustrating that we have to mobilize every couple months to keep our leaders from inflicting real human suffering on their constituents,” Obama said of the health care battle. “But typically, that’s how progress is won.”

2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Rivaling Other Historically Active Years

.

As of Monday, 13 named storms, seven hurricanes, and four major (Category 3 or stronger) hurricanes had formed in the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.

These numbers were boosted by a stretch of eight named storms, all of which except for Lee became hurricanes, since Aug. 6.

Included in this stretch was catastrophic Category 4 Hurricane Harvey, followed by the long-lived saga of Hurricane Irma, then by long-lived Jose and the latest intense and soon-to-be long-lived Hurricane Maria.

.

2017 Atlantic hurricane season tracks-to-date, through 11 a.m. EDT, September 18, 2017. (Note: The green line connects the points between Harvey degenerating to a remnant in the eastern Caribbean Sea and its regeneration as a tropical cyclone in the southwest Gulf of Mexico.)

The Suburb of the Future, Almost Here

The suburbanization of America marches on. That movement includes millennials, who, as it turns out, are not a monolithic generation of suburb-hating city dwellers.

Most of that generation represents a powerful global trend. They may like the city, but they love the suburbs even more.

They are continuing to migrate to suburbs. According to the latest Census Bureau statistics, 25- to 29-year-olds are about a quarter more likely to move from the city to the suburbs as vice versa; older millennials are more than twice as likely.

Their future — and that of the planet — lies on the urban peripheries. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma made clear that, especially in suburbs, the United States desperately needs better drainage systems to handle the enormous amounts of rainfall expected from climate change.

They also made clear that new, sustainable suburbs can offer an advantage by expanding landscapes that can absorb water.
