The general who ran the U.S. military relief operation after Hurricane Katrina is among the chorus of critics who now say the delay in getting the U.S. military to Puerto Rico is at the heart of the island’s unfolding humanitarian crisis.
“The Navy and Air Force could have been there Sunday,” Ret. Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré said Thursday to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell. “Could have opened the port, could have opened the air field. Why the hell has it taken this long to do that? That is what we do in the military.”
“There’s something missing in the decision-making process,” he said. “[The cabinet should’ve] come up with a course of action and [called] the president off the damn golf course.”

Twitter said Thursday that it had shut down 201 accounts that were tied to the same Russian operatives who posted thousands of political ads on Facebook, but the effort frustrated lawmakers who said the problem is far broader than the company appeared to know.
The company said it also found three accounts from the news site RT — which Twitter linked to the Kremlin — that spent $274,100 in ads on its platform in 2016.
Despite the disclosures, Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) questioned whether the company is doing enough to stop Russian operatives from using its platform to spread disinformation and division in U.S. society.

A social media campaign calling itself “Blacktivist” and linked to the Russian government used both Facebook and Twitter in an apparent attempt to amplify racial tensions during the U.S. presidential election, two sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN. The Twitter account has been handed over to Congress; the Facebook account is expected to be handed over in the coming days.
Both Blacktivist accounts, each of which used the handle Blacktivists, regularly shared content intended to stoke outrage. “Black people should wake up as soon as possible,” one post on the Twitter account read. “Black families are divided and destroyed by mass incarceration and death of black men,” another read. The accounts also posted videos of police violence against African Americans.
The Blacktivist accounts provide further evidence that Russian-linked social media accounts saw racial tensions as something to be exploited in order to achieve the broader Russian goal of dividing Americans and creating chaos in U.S. politics during a campaign in which race repeatedly became an issue.

The three eagles have landed ― in a golf course in Jersey City. Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton attended the Presidents Cup Thursday in an extra special opening ceremony.
Since the golf tournament began in 1994, this is the first time three U.S. presidents have attended the matches together, according to the Associated Press.
The crowds packed into the grandstands weren’t the only ones excited about the visitors. Even the ever steady pro golfers were eager for the chance to see the trio. Phil Mickelson caught them early and ensured he was the first golfer to get a presidential selfie.

Twitter has informed Congress that it found and took action on roughly 200 accounts on its service after determining they were linked to Russia and sought to interfere in American politics.
“Of the roughly 450 accounts that Facebook recently shared as a part of their review, we concluded that 22 had corresponding accounts on Twitter. All of those identified accounts had already been or immediately were suspended from Twitter for breaking our rules,” Twitter announced in a blog post Thursday afternoon. “In addition, from those accounts we found an additional 179 related or linked accounts, and took action on the ones we found in violation of our rules.”
The social media company met with the Senate and House intelligence committees on Thursday amid the ongoing congressional investigations into Russia’s efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential campaign, including through social media.

Record-setting Emmy winner and “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has breast cancer.
The actress revealed the diagnosis Thursday in a tweet sent to her approximately 748,000 followers. The post also included her thoughts on health care access.
“1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one,” her post read. “The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

President Trump waived the shipping restrictions for Puerto Rico on Thursday that the island’s governor has said complicate and raise the price of hurricane relief.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced the decision in a Twitter message. The move comes after criticism that the White House has been slow to help Puerto Rico recover from the devastation of Hurricane Maria.
Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rosselló, had said Wednesday that he expected the waiver, which suspends a 1920 law requiring that only U.S.-flagged vessels be used for shipments between two U.S. ports. The law, known as the Jones Act, limits the number of ships that can be sent to Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, and thus the amount of relief supplies that have come in since the hurricane.

If wind power is going to displace inexpensive fossil fuels, wind turbines need to get bigger — much bigger.
When it comes to building things, Eric Loth has his head in the clouds. This engineering professor at the University of Virginia wants to construct a wind turbine standing more than five times higher than the Statue of Liberty, with rotor blades longer than the Washington Monument is tall.
Not only that, the 1,650-foot-high mega-turbine would change along with the weather, bending its blades gracefully to cope with hurricane-strength winds. And all of this would happen dozens of miles out at sea.
Typical wind turbines are about 80 meters, or 260 feet, in height. Why build one so big?
