National support for legalizing marijuana has been growing rapidly.
Now legalized in 23 states and the District of Columbia for medical use and four states — Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska — and DC for recreational use, cannabis is big business. Independent analysts have valued the legal industry at $3 billion and rising to $10 billion when including ancillary trades and services.
Cassandra Farrington, the co-founder and chief executive of Marijuana Business Media, puts the industry’s workforce at 60,000.
Others sates are expected to follow suit over the next couple of years, putting an end to cannabis prohibition. With the industry concentrating on making cannabis more of a mainstream and sellable product, a growing crop of businesses are expected to profit from the cultivation and distribution of marijuana.

Our planet is getting hotter and drier. Drinking water is in short supply, but there are two largely untapped sources: the ocean and sewage. To get a taste of what might be in store for our faucets and understand the pros and cons, journalist Amanda Little goes to California.
The summer of 2019 has seen heat records tumble like dominoes across the Northern Hemisphere. On May 26, the thermometer climbed to 102 in Savannah, Georgia, an all-time high for that month; the same day, it hit an unprecedented 103.1 in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Then, in June, a three-week heat wave tore through Pakistan and India, where it reached 123.4 in the central city of Churu. In July, it was Western Europe’s turn when the temperature soared to 108.7 in Paris and 102.2 in Brussels.

Despite pressure from lawmakers and women’s rights advocates, accounting giant Ernst & Young is refusing to let Karen Ward, a former partner, take her sexual harassment case to a public courtroom.
In a letter to Ward’s attorneys last week, EY’s general counsel Ronald Hauben said the firm is a “great place for women to work.” He insisted that bringing cases to private arbitration ― a private courtroom outside the public justice system without juries ― is “fair, efficient and cost-effective.” And he emphasized that Ward “voluntarily” agreed to the process.
But so far Ward has spent an eye-popping $185,000 to arbitrate her claims against the firm, because of a provision in her employment contract that requires her to split the costs of dispute resolution. If she were able to bring the case to a public court, the cost would only be $450 in court fees.

Todd Chrisley, the star of the reality television show “Chrisley Knows Best,” was indicted Tuesday on tax evasion and other charges by a federal grand jury in Atlanta.
The 12-count indictment issued against Chrisley and his wife, Julie, also includes charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States, according to a copy obtained by NBC News.
The family accountant, Peter Tarantino, was also charged in Georgia’s Northern District.

The numbers are mind-boggling: $70,000 per minute, $4 million per hour, $100 million per day.
That’s how quickly the fortune of the Waltons, the clan behind Walmart Inc., has been growing since last year’s Bloomberg ranking of the world’s richest families.
At that rate, their wealth would’ve expanded about $23,000 since you began reading this. A new Walmart associate in the U.S. would’ve made about 6 cents in that time, on the way to an $11 hourly minimum.
Even in this era of extreme wealth and brutal inequality, the contrast is jarring. The heirs of Sam Walton, Walmart’s notoriously frugal founder, are amassing wealth on a near-unprecedented scale — and they’re hardly alone.
The Walton fortune has swelled by $39 billion, to $191 billion, since topping the June 2018 ranking of the world’s richest families.

Seventy-eight-year-old Mauro Morandi often walks along the rocky shores of Budelli Island and looks out over the disconsolate sea, feeling dwarfed by the phantom forces that tug and twist the tides.
“We think we are giants that can dominate the Earth, but we’re just mosquitos,” Morandi says.
In 1989 on a stretch of water between Sardinia and Corsica, with a crippled engine and anchor adrift, Morandi’s catamaran was gripped by these same inexorable forces and carried to the shores of Budelli Island. When he learned that its caretaker was retiring from his post in two days, Morandi—long disenchanted with society—sold the catamaran and took his place.

Mauro Morandi has lived alone on Budelli Island for 28 years. “What I love the most is the silence,” he says. “The silence in winter when there isn’t a storm and no one is around, but also the summer silence of sunset.”

After Serena Williams had to withdraw from her tennis match in Toronto on Sunday due to an injury, her opponent Bianca Andreescu came over to offer encouragement and support.
Williams, 37, was forced to retire with an upper back injury in the first set of her Rogers Cup women’s singles final against Andreescu, which made the 19-year-old the first Canadian to win the cup in 50 years.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, was visibly upset at the decision and began crying on her bench. Shortly thereafter, Andreescu came over to embrace her and give words of support and admiration.“Are you OK? What’s happening?” the teen asked. When Williams told her about the injury, Andreescu said, “I’ve watched you your whole career. You’re a fucking beast.”
