The Earth is not a solid mass of rock: its hot, dark, fractured subsurface is home to weird and wonderful life forms.
The living landscape all around us is just a thin veneer atop the vast, little-understood bulk of the Earth’s interior. A widespread misconception about the deep subsurface is that this realm consists of a continuous mass of uniform compressed solid rock. Few are aware that this mass of rock is heavily fractured, and water runs in many of these fractures and faults, down to depths of many kilometres. The deep Earth supports an entire biosphere, largely cut off from the surface world, and is still only beginning to be explored and understood.
The amount of water in the subsurface is considerable. Globally, the freshwater reservoir in the subsurface is estimated to be up to 100 times as great as all the available fresh water in the rivers, lakes and swamps combined. This water, ranging in ages from seven years to 2 billion years, is being intensely studied by researchers because it defines the location and scope of deep life. We know now that the deep terrestrial subsurface is home to one quintillion simple (prokaryotic) cells. That is two to 20 times as many cells as live in all the open ocean. By some estimates, the deep biosphere could contain up to one third of Earth’s entire biomass.

The New York Giants announced Tuesday that the team would bench star quarterback Eli Manning.
Coach Ben McAdoo said backup quarterback Geno Smith would start in place of Manning as the team tries to revive a losing season. Manning has started in 210 consecutive regular-season games, a streak that’s second only to former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. McAdoo also mentioned giving rookie Davis Webb an opportunity to start as the team evaluates Smith in the next five weeks, according to the team’s website.
Manning, who has started every game since 2004, was gracious about the decision.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday retweeted a series of overtly Islamophobic videos shared by a controversial British far-right activist.
The videos, posed Britain First Deputy Leader Jayda Fransen, claimed to show various violent crimes committed by Muslims. Britain First is widely known in the U.K. for spreading Islamophobic and racist videos, including many proven to be fake.
Fransen’s first tweet shows a boy beating another boy on crutches. The caption says: “Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!” Yet the video’s original caption, released with the video in May on a Dutch website, mentioned neither race nor religion. A 16-year-old pictured in the video was charged with provoking the fight, and a 16-year-old who shot the video also was charged, local media reported.

NBC has fired longtime “Today” host Matt Lauer following allegations of workplace misconduct, the network announced on Wednesday.
“We are devastated,” “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie said in an emotional statement. “All we can say is we are heartbroken.”
Guthrie said that NBC News chairman Andy Lack informed employees early Wednesday about the decision after having received a complaint about Lauer’s behavior on Monday night. She read Lack’s note on-air, noting that while the network says it had never received a complaint about Lauer before, it has “reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
Both Guthrie and co-host Hoda Kotb appeared shaken by the news.

Poor Americans would lose billions of dollars worth of federal benefits under the Senate GOP tax bill, according to a new Congressional Budget Office report.
This is largely because the legislation would eliminate the individual mandate, which requires nearly all Americans to get health insurance or pay a penalty. This would result in 13 million fewer people having coverage in 2027, the CBO found.
Many of the folks who would forgo coverage would have lower or moderate incomes and would have qualified for Medicaid or federal help paying their premiums or out-of-pocket health expenses, CBO found.
Those earning less than $40,000 a year would be worse off in 2025, when the bill’s provisions would mostly be in effect, according to the report released Sunday. On the flip side, those with higher incomes would enjoy tax breaks.

Why do some people seem immune to colds and flu? Follow these tips from real people and experts, and you can learn how to avoid them too.
Everyday mistakes can raise your risk of catching a cold and that includes touching surfaces that many, many other people have touched. A University of Arizonastudy found that a virus spreads to over 50 percent of surfaces and other employees within hours when a single person in an office is infected. Partha Nandi, MD, a leading physician and author of Ask Dr. Nandi, advises avoiding touching common surfaces when possible. Even after you wash your hands, ‘use a paper towel to turn off the faucet,’ he says.

One distressed bobcat found itself taking a rather longer journey that it anticipated, after being hit by a car and transported on a 50-mile road trip. The unlucky animal found itself caught in the grille of a woman’s Toyota Prius and was forced to travel with her to work through Gloucester, Virginia.
Workers from Richmond’s Animal Care and Control centre (RACC) helped the woman safely remove her feline passenger from the car, and took it to the Wildlife Centre of Virginia for a checkup.

Obesity is one of America’s most pressing health concerns — more than two in three adults are overweight or obese. Although Trust for America’s Health’s most recent State of Obesity report reveals that obesity trends in both children and adults have begun to slow, the epidemic still afflicts 17 percent of children and 38 percent of adults. There are, however, certain cities and states where unhealthy life habits are more common than others. WalletHub’s analysts compared 100 of the most populated U.S. metropolitan areas across 17 indicators of weight-related problems, including access to healthy food, projected obesity rates and percentage of physically inactive adults.
