Google’s years-long spat with Beijing just began a new chapter.
The company has begun encrypting searches made by people in China, where Google has long run afoul of regulations designed to keep a tight lid on searches deemed inappropriate.
Google’s encryption of searches in China reportedly will prevent the “Great Firewall of China” from detecting when users search for scandalous terms like “Tiananmen Square” or “Dalai Lama.” China could just out and block Google altogether, but short of doing that, the country likely will have trouble controlling Google searches as it has in the past.

With nearly a month to spare, startup Omate burst through its Kickstarter goal of US$100,000 this week and is on its way to shipping its TruSmart smartwatch in time for the holiday season.
More than $250,000 have been pledged so far toward the device, which is perhaps the closest thing yet to an Android smartphone that can be worn on a wrist.

You likely already know the things you like to do, like watching a sporting event, as well as the things that you don’t like to do, such as sitting in traffic.
We all experience feelings when participating in such activities, and those feelings form the basis of a personal body of knowledge that we draw on to know whether we like doing a thing or not. Discounting philosophy, theology and other studies of the human condition, that’s life.
However, it’s all a bit unscientific. It’s also pedestrian for this day and age, and doesn’t play into another element of the human condition: mankind’s desire for self-awareness and curiosity.

To discover the deepest mysteries of the universe, no ordinary computer will do. Solving some of the most challenging computer science problems — notably toward the advancement of machine learning — will require quantum computing. To that end, Google announced that it is launching the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab with NASA’s Ames Research Center, which will host the lab.
This facility will house a new quantum computer from D-Wave Systems and the Universities Space Research Association. Researchers from around the world will share time on it, with the common goal of studying how quantum computing might advance machine learning.

Computer printers aren’t typically linked with the word “subversive,” but that’s the mission of a new site for 3D printer files.
Defcad was announced Tuesday at the South by Southwest Interactive conference. It is designed to give 3D printer enthusiasts access to files that allow them to create objects with their printers — even if those objects are protected by intellectual property laws.
Defcad is backed by Defense Distributed, an Austin, Texas group that recently made headlines by offering 3D printer files to make firearm parts.

Those who eagerly await the latest tweets from Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Justin Bieber may soon have one more reason to tie their musical interests to Twitter: The social network will reportedly use a recent acquisition to set up a Twitter Music app.
Technology from the music discovery company We Are Hunted, which Twitter bought last year, will reportedly serve as the app’s foundation. Soundcloud will provide music streaming services with videos courtesy of Vevo, according to published reports.
The Twitter Music app for iOS devices may debut later this month.

If the idea that matter can be organized in a way that’s similar to binary code seems implausible, get ready for a shock: It can. An MIT team has created a milli-motein — a tiny device made of millimeter-sized components with a motorized design inspired by proteins. Milli-moteins can naturally fold themselves into almost any shape imaginable.
Researchers at MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms have created milli-motein — a manifestation of raw digital data that could create transformable robots. However, instead of pop-culture robots that can transform into giant cars or airplanes, these could result in material changes that might one day transform the world.

The problem with invisibility cloaks is that up until now, they always reflect a little bit of light, so the object being hidden is partially visible. Researchers at Duke University tweaked their fabrication technique to make up for this flaw and created a device that doesn’t give off that reflected image.
