Islamic State group militants burned a captured Jordanian pilot to death in a cage, according to a purported video of the violence released Tuesday. The kingdom, which had vowed a swift and lethal response, executed two al-Qaida prisoners by hanging early Wednesday.
The pilot’s gruesome death sparked outrage and anti-Islamic State group demonstrations in Jordan. The video emerged after a weeklong drama over a possible prisoner exchange for a female al-Qaida operative imprisoned in Jordan who was one of the two prisoners executed.
The Jordanian military confirmed the death of 26-year-old Lt. Muath Al-Kaseasbeh, who was captured by the extremists in December when his F-16 crashed while he was flying a mission as part of the U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State group.

Last week, Mott Hall Bridges Academy principal Nydia Lopez took the stage in front of her 195 students and made an announcement: a school fundraiser to send the Brooklyn middle schoolers on a trip to Harvard had not only met its $100,000 goal, but had miraculously raised more than $700,000.
That number, as of Tuesday afternoon, had jumped to $1,179,873.
“The scholars of MHBA are inspiring the entire world,” Lopez said during a recent school assembly. “People have written me letters from New Zealand, England and South Africa, telling me that they care about you.”

Astronomers may be a step closer to solving the mystery of a strange object seen orbiting the massive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
Dubbed G2, the object was first spotted in 2011 and was thought initially to be a gas cloud on the verge of being ripped apart by the black hole, which is known as Sagittarius A*. But when the object stayed intact, some scientists suggested G2 was something else: a pair of binary stars.
But now a team of scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany have sparked new debate, offering more evidence to support the gas cloud theory.

Outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in an interview on Friday the United States might eventually need to send non-combat ground troops to Iraq to help turn back Islamic State forces.
Hagel, who announced his resignation under pressure in November, told CNN all options must be considered in Iraq, including sending troops for non-combat roles such as gathering intelligence and locating Islamic State targets.
“I think it may require a forward deployment of some of our troops …,” he said. “I would say we’re not there yet. Whether we get there or not, I don’t know.”

Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke said Wednesday that he was considering running against Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) as the congressman tries to distance himself from an appearance he made at a conference hosted by Duke’s white supremacist group more than a decade ago.
Scalise has faced heavy criticism after it emerged that he had spoken at a conference hosted by European-American Unity and Rights Organization as a state senator in 2002. Scalise, now the House majority whip, has said he was unaware of the group’s views at the time.
During an appearance on “The Jim Engster Show,” first reported by BuzzFeed, Duke — who was almost elected Louisiana’s governor in 1991 — said he was considering running against Scalise because the congressman had betrayed his constituents.

Thankfully, Tunicia Hall survived, but her recent memories did not — including the memory of her June wedding. She looked up at her new husband, whom she had known for 30 years, and asked, “Are we married?” reports NBC 4 in New York.

The world crept closer to doomsday on Thursday.
That’s according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which each year updates the hands on a clock meant to symbolize how close we are to the annihilation of the human race, or midnight. For the last three years, the world was five minutes from the end. Today, we’re three minutes away.
The two-minute move is symbolic, but it gives a sense of how grim the outlook some of the best scientific minds have for humanity. The decision to move the hands forward, said Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists executive director Kennette Benedict, came about largely due to the threats posed by anthropogenic climate change and the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The body of a woman missing for almost a year was found floating in an apartment building’s water tank in Mexico City.
Carmen Yarira Esparza Noriega, a 27-year-old psychology graduate and aspiring actress, was reported missing last February, according to Fox News Latino. Family and friends feared the woman had been kidnapped and forced into a sex trafficking ring, according to Mexican newspaper El Milenio.
“But it seems,” her friend, 30-year-old Javier Paz, told the Daily Mail, “that her body was back in her apartment block the whole time.”

Cities across the Northeast mobilized snowplows and airlines canceled thousands of flights Monday as a potentially historic storm pushed its way up the Philadelphia-to-Boston corridor with what forecasters said could be up to 2 feet of snow.
More than 4,000 flights were canceled or delayed, schools planned to close early and a hospital in New York increased staff and outfitted its vehicles with snow traveling gear.
The National Weather Service said the nor’easter would bring heavy snow, powerful winds and widespread coastal flooding starting Monday and through Tuesday. A blizzard warning was issued for a 250-mile stretch of the Northeast, including New York and Boston.
