Once upon a time, not all that long ago, Motorola released an excellent flagship phone called the Moto X. Sure, it didn’t have the best battery ever and the camera was pretty lousy, but it just oozed charm and didn’t leave me wanting for much. Then, just months later, Motorola (with a perhaps little coaxing from Verizon) released a phone that addressed just about all of the X’s shortcomings. That, in a nutshell, is the story of the Droid Turbo: Just think of it as the Moto X Plus. But is it really that much better than that other phone we fell for? And will Verizon Moto X owners rue the day they extended their contracts?
While it lacks the style and charm of the 2014 Moto X, the Droid Turbo is a powerhouse that manages to outperform its relative in nearly every way that matters. Sadly, it’s a Verizon exclusive so the rest of you (unless you live in Brazil and Mexico and buy a Moto Maxx) need not apply.

Android on a point-and-shoot? Last year we learned that it could be done. But with some features that duplicate the functionality of a smartphone without an ability to make calls, Samsung’s Galaxy Camera was a confusing mix of form and function. It was very much a first-generation device, and while they may have regretted it later, some curious early adopters did drop $500 for the soon-to-be-obsolete hybrid. The cumbersome compact, with its massive 21x lens and power-hungry 4.8-inch touchscreen, may not have won over the photography community, but Samsung’s 2013 approach has a much better chance at success.

Most companies refresh their products on an annual basis, carefully timing development and release schedules to match consumer demand, product obsolescence and component upgrades. It’s the norm, an expected pattern that most PC, smartphone and tablet manufacturers follow. Razer, however, completely ignores this cycle, as exemplified by its Blade line of gaming laptops — already on its third generation in less than two years. This would be less impressive if the firm wasn’t a relative newcomer to the game; before it announced the Blade, Razer was known primarily for creating keyboards, gaming mice and console controllers. A fully fledged gaming PC was a jarring departure for the humble peripheral maker.
Even so, here we are: reviewing the third-generation Razer Blade gaming laptop. This, too, is a departure from what we’ve grown to expect from the company — a smaller, thinner device bereft of the previous model’s signature Switchblade interface.

Earlier in the week I published some news about a new iPhone 5 battery pack from PowerSkin. Now the Pop’n iPhone 5 battery pack (US$79.99) has arrived for testing, so join me while I take a look at this decidedly different way of keeping your phone powered up.
What makes the PowerSkin PoP’n different from other external battery packs? The suction cups. There are 24 small suction cups that are used to stick the PoP’n onto the back of your iPhone 5 or case.

Over the years, Mophie has become synonymous with extending the iPhone’s battery life. The outfit’s range of battery-filled iPhone cases has garnered rave reviews across the industry, and even I religiously used one on an iPhone 3G. In more recent days, the company has cautiously expanded into a few new areas — namely, building battery cases for non-Apple phones, and creating the contraption shown above. The Mophie Outride is an action-cam case that’s designed to be strapped onto helmets, automobile hoods and any other place where your average X Games wannabe would look to capture extreme sports footage.

What a difference a generation makes. While the original Kindle Fire impressed, there was only one thing that really made it worth considering: it was cheap. Really cheap. But, when we got our hands on the 7-inch, 720p Kindle Fire HD a few months back we had an honest-to-gosh nice device — that happened to be cheap. And what do we have here? Why, it’s a slightly larger version of that very same tablet, but at a significantly higher cost.
