Microsoft is working on an interactive whiteboard which aims to interpret users’ sketches to complete the diagrams they were drawing.
The firm will unveil the prototype as part of Techfest – an annual event where its researchers reveal some of the projects they are working on.
The digital canvas is designed to help workers make sense of “big data” – the growing amount of information available from sensors and other sources.

The interplanetary internet has been used by an astronaut at the International Space Station (ISS) to send commands to a robot on Earth. The experimental technology, called Disruption-Tolerant Networking (DTN) protocol, could be a future way to communicate with astronauts on Mars. Currently, if there is a problem when data is sent between Earth and Mars rovers, information can be lost.

Tests have been carried out to see whether military drones can mix safely in the air with passenger planes.

The MirageTable was demonstrated at a conference in Austin, Texas and is outlined on the firm’s research site.

Engineers have created a robot that mimics a worm’s movements – crawling along surfaces by contracting segments of its body. The technique allows the machine to be made of soft materials so it can squeeze through tight spaces and mould its shape to rough terrain.
