When Verizon Wireless wanted to drive more foot traffic to its retail stores last winter, the brand supplemented traditional advertising an onsite program called Stop Motion Studio.
Customers could create short, animated videos, decorated with tiny snowmen, reindeer, Santas and other props, to use as their holiday greeting. While they were playing mini-movie mogul, they were also learning about their phone’s capabilities, accessories and add-ons.
This wasn’t your typical telecom commercial. Engineered by ad agency SapientNitro, it touted Verizon’s shop as a cool, fun destination. In so doing, it promoted the brand in ways that a 30-second TV spot never could. Of the consumers who participated, 95% said they learned something new about their phone, and would return to the store for more workshops. A whopping 100% posted their videos to Vine.

Facebook remains the most popular social media platform among marketers, but less than half agree that it’s actually effective, according to Social Media Examiner’s 2014 Social Media Marketing Industry Report.
Nearly 100% of professionals polled reported using the network in business-to-consumer marketing while 89% said they used it to communicate with other businesses. Despite these astronomical numbers, 57% of the marketers either don’t think their Facebook posts make a difference or aren’t sure.
Twitter came in as the second most popular site — 83% of marketers reported using the microblogging service — while LinkedIn took third. Only 28% take advantage of Instagram while a mere 1% have incorporated Snapchat into their work. The top six platforms have stayed relatively steady since 2012.

Way back in 1931, Albert Einstein famously mused that “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
In saying this, as in so many other ways, Einstein was ahead of his time, since the value of the entity called “the fact” has eroded almost down to nothing in the 82 years since his utterance.
“Knowing stuff” used to be esteemed; smart people were revered and admired for being “learned.” Now, those who use their brains as a repository for facts are merely a quaint curiosity to be exploited on Jeopardy or around a Trivial Pursuit board.
Really, what does anybody truly need to know now? Anything that was, that happened or that is can be referenced in a millisecond or two via Google on your smartphone.
True value these days isn’t in just knowing. And with all due respect to Albert Einstein, even wild-eyed imagination ain’t the shining star it used to be.
These days, the holy grail of intelligence is a double-barreled entity called Curiosity.
Barry Diller, the sage Chairman of IAC and Expedia, may not be today’s answer to Einstein, but in last week’s Bloomberg BusinessWeek, the mega-successful thinker, builder and operator waxed wise in his response to the question: “Are there areas that you wish you knew more about?“

Schmap already helped advertisers and other companies understand their Twitter followers through its Know Your Followers product, but today it launched a new, upgraded service called Demographics Pro — CEO Paul Hallett described the concept as “Nielsen for Twitter.”
Nielsen does its own social media analysis, and it announced a partnership with Twitter last fall, but that was focused on measuring the social media impact of TV shows. Demographics Pro is much broader than that, giving customers a detailed demographic breakdown of the people following a given account or commenting on a given hashtag.
