A Colorado man can now control two prosthetic arms with his mind.
Les Baugh lost both his arms in an electrical accident 40 years ago. But with the help Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), he’s able to control a set of Modular Prosthetic Limbs with his nerves. All he has to do is think about moving his arms, and they move.
Nothing is permanently attached to him; Baugh wears what is called a “socket,” which connects the prosthetics to his body. The researchers measured the way his muscles and nerves react when Baugh thinks about moving his arms. Then, when he thinks about moving his arms and hands in a certain way, the prosthetics move.

“moveForward(100);” may now be the most famous line of JavaScript in history — it’s what President Barack Obama wrote Monday as he reportedly became the first United States president to write a computer program.
The occasion was intended to mark the first day of 2014’s Computer Science Education Week, which provides opportunities for students to learn computer science.
Around 30 middle-school students from Newark, New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York were hosted at the White House for an “Hour of Code.”

David Cohen understands that mosquitoes aren’t just pesky annoyances — they’re global killers, too.
That’s why the 12-year-old from Dallas invented a robot that drowns the pests using a pump-jet system that traps them underwater using mesh. He submitted his work to the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge earlier this year and is one of the competition’s ten finalists.
The challenge, which is open for students who are in grades 5 through 8 at the time of submission, awards its winner $25,000, the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist,” and an all-expenses paid vacation. A victor will be decided after finalists present their work on Oct. 13 and 14 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Imagine a future chock full of unmanned vehicles, more commonly referred to by the ominous, near-Star Warsian term “drones.” Did your brain just go to a scary place, where missiles and James Bond lasers are raining down on us all? Well, you’re certainly not alone.
But what about the awesome side of the future? With jetpacks and whole meals in a single pill and robots that rub your feet after a long day of jetpacking! Drones can be part of that future, too, and they almost certainly will be — which of course won’t make them any less terrifying.

In what some are calling a bionic hand breakthrough, scientists in Switzerland reported the development of a “smart” artificial hand that lets amputees feel what they’re touching or holding.
The experimental prosthesis connects directly to an amputee’s nervous system, providing realistic sensory feedback — giving amputees “dexterity and the sensation of touch,” according to a written statement.
“We could be on the cusp of providing new and more effective clinical solutions to amputees in the next years,” lead researcher Dr. Silvestro Micera, head of the Translational Neural Engineering Laboratory at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale in Lausanne, said in the statement.

At 7 years old, Zora Ball has become the youngest person to create a mobile video game.
The app was unveiled at the FATE Bootstrap Expo, held at the University of Pennsylvania last month.
Ball developed the game using programming language Bootstrap, which is usually taught to students between the ages of 12 and 16, to help them learn concepts of algebra via video game development.
According to Mashable, Ball also successfully reconfigured the app when asked to do so at the Expo, silencing anyone who may have thought that her older brother — a STEM scholar of the year — helped her program the game.
