Fido just can’t help himself. Each time you scratch that sweet spot on his belly, his hind leg starts kicking like crazy–but why?
Ultimately, it’s all about self-preservation.
“Dogs kick when we scratch their belly because it’s an involuntary reflex,” Dr. Marc Bekoff, a canine expert based in Boulder, Colorado, and author of the book “Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed,” told The Huffington Post in an email.

Astronomers may be a step closer to solving the mystery of a strange object seen orbiting the massive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
Dubbed G2, the object was first spotted in 2011 and was thought initially to be a gas cloud on the verge of being ripped apart by the black hole, which is known as Sagittarius A*. But when the object stayed intact, some scientists suggested G2 was something else: a pair of binary stars.
But now a team of scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany have sparked new debate, offering more evidence to support the gas cloud theory.

You never know what’s lying just beneath the surface in your own yard.
Most people find some old coins or a rusty bicycle chain. But two men in Michigan hit the jackpot when they discovered the remains of a massive Ice Age mammal.
Contractor Daniel LaPoint Jr. was working in Eric Witzke’s Bellevue, Mich., yard when he noticed a giant rib sticking out of the ground, according to the Lansing State Journal. Over four days in November, the two worked together to pull 42 bones out of the ground.

Call it the comeback of the year.
Last year, equipment failure caused NASA to deem its $600-million Kepler space telescope irreparable. But since then, astronomers and engineers devised an ingenious way to repurpose Kepler, whose mission has been to scour the cosmos in search of Earthlike planets.
And now, the planet-hunting probe not only has been reborn, but also has discovered a massive exoplanet some 180 light-years away.

Just in time for the holidays, NASA has released a new photo showing a spectacular light show created by a pair of merging galaxies 130 million light-years from Earth.
The photo is a composite image of the spiral galaxies NGC 2207 and IC 2163, located in the constellation Canis Major.
The image is a mash-up of X-rays captured by NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory (shown in pink), visible light data from the Hubble Space Telescope (shown in red, green, and blue), and infrared data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope (shown in red).

Relaxing in front of a crackling fire (or at least the Netflix version) is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a cold winter evening. And now scientists know why.
Watching a fire lowers blood pressure, according to new University of Alabama research. Our enjoyment of gazing at fire may be rooted in evolution, as the act of gathering around a fire dates back to prehistoric times.
The researchers, led by anthropologist Christopher Lynn, asked 226 adults to watch a video of a fireplace, and took their blood pressure before and after watching the video. They also asked participants to report on their experiences of the fire.

The unraveling of Rolling Stone‘s recent blockbuster feature on campus sexual assault has led to a great deal of hand-wringing over the way the media covers these crimes.
The magazine’s story centers around “Jackie,” who described being subject to a horrific gang rape while a freshman at the University of Virginia. Independent reporting found fault in Rolling Stone’s coverage, primarily surrounding some discrepancies between Jackie’s account in the magazine and the memories of those who had been around her at the time of the attack.
Based on these discrepancies, some have called the story a hoax, or at least untrue. In response, activists were immediately concerned that the bad press would reinforce the prevailing tendency to doubt sexual assault victims, an estimated 92-98 percent of whom are telling the truth. But actually, the argument that Jackie’s account is fake based on fuzzy detail recall isn’t just unlikely — it’s scientifically unsound.

Kissing just got a whole lot less romantic–at least for germaphobes.
A new study shows that a single French kiss can transfer up to 80 million bacteria from one person to another.
For the study, 21 couples visiting a zoo in Amsterdam were asked to lock lips for 10 seconds. Before the kiss, one member of each couple drank a yogurt drink containing specific strains of bacteria. After the kiss, the researchers swabbed the mouth of the partner who hadn’t drunk the yogurt, and then did a bacterial count of the strains from the yogurt to arrive at the 80 million figure.

Flats may be all the rage these days, but a provocative new study from France suggests that high heels do a better job of helping women get what they want from men.
“Women’s shoe heel size exerts a powerful effect on men’s behavior,” Dr. Nicolas Guéguen, a psychologist at the Université de Bretagne-Sud in Rennes, and the scientist behind the study, said in a written statement.
