A hacking ring has stolen up to $1 billion from banks around the world in what would be one of the biggest banking breaches known, a cybersecurity firm says in a report scheduled to be delivered Monday.
The hackers have been active since at least the end of 2013 and infiltrated more than 100 banks in 30 countries, according to Russian security company Kaspersky Lab.
After gaining access to banks’ computers through phishing schemes and other methods, they lurk for months to learn the banks’ systems, taking screen shots and even video of employees using their computers, the company says.

An ancient tragedy is shining new light on life in the Neolithic Era, as archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a woman who appears to have died with her twins during childbirth nearly 8,000 years ago.
It’s the oldest example of death by dystocia, or obstructed labor, and the earliest known example of twins on the archaeological record, researchers wrote in an article describing the discovery, published in the Feb. issue of the journal Antiquity.

As bad as recent droughts in California, the Southwest and the Midwest have been, scientists say far worse “megadroughts” are coming — and they’re bound to last for decades.
.
“Unprecedented drought conditions” — the worst in more than 1,000 years — are likely to come to the Southwest and Central Plains after 2050 and stick around because of global warming, according to a new study in the journal Science Advances on Thursday.
“Nearly every year is going to be dry toward the end of the 21st century compared to what we think of as normal conditions now,” said study lead author Benjamin Cook, a NASA atmospheric scientist. “We’re going to have to think about a much drier future in western North America.”

President Barack Obama on Wednesday formally asked Congress for new war authority to fight Islamic State militants.
Obama’s request came in the form of a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force. It’s a retroactive request: Congress is receiving the document six months after the U.S. began bombing the Islamic State group, also called ISIS. The president has said he believes he already has the authority to go after the group — citing a sweeping 2001 AUMF as his legal grounds to act unilaterally — but welcomes congressional signoff. Some lawmakers don’t think he currently has the authority.
The proposed AUMF would limit military action against the Islamic State to three years and allow limited use of U.S. ground troops for things like rescue operations or intelligence sharing. It would put no geographic limitations on the military campaign; instead, it would limit military action to countering the Islamic State and associated forces. It would also repeal a 2002 Iraq War AUMF that never expired, but it would leave in place the broad 2001 AUMF. The new AUMF would sunset in three years.

Whether you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, picked a fight with a loved one or struggled through that morning commute to a job you don’t particularly enjoy, it can be a tough task to plaster a smile across your face when you’re feeling less than chipper.
.
But by choosing to smile, happy changes start to occur automatically, both internally and externally. Great power lies in a random smile, so long as you choose to share it with the world.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s move on Monday to allow gay marriage to proceed in Alabama is the strongest signal yet that the justices are likely to rule in June that no state can restrict marriage to only heterosexual couples.
Of the nine justices, only two – conservatives Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia – dissented from the court’s refusal to block gay weddings from starting in Alabama. Gay marriage is now legal in 37 states.
Thomas acknowledged in a dissenting opinion that the court’s move to allow gay marriages to go ahead “may well be seen as a signal of the court’s intended resolution” as it considers cases from four other states on whether same-sex marriage bans are permitted under the U.S. Constitution. Although only two justices publicly dissented, the court order did not reveal whether any other justices voted to grant the stay.

Fido just can’t help himself. Each time you scratch that sweet spot on his belly, his hind leg starts kicking like crazy–but why?
Ultimately, it’s all about self-preservation.
“Dogs kick when we scratch their belly because it’s an involuntary reflex,” Dr. Marc Bekoff, a canine expert based in Boulder, Colorado, and author of the book “Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed,” told The Huffington Post in an email.

Vice President Joe Biden will visit the early caucus state of Iowa next week, stirring speculation once again about the possibility of a presidential run in 2016.
Biden will travel to Des Moines on Thursday to tout the Obama administration’s policies on the economy at Drake University, the White House announced. The vice president will also participate in a roundtable at Des Moines Area Community College, where he will presumably discuss President Barack Obama’s proposal to offer “free” community college to American students.
If Biden, 72, were to be elected president in 2016, he would take office at age 74, making him the oldest person ever to do so. Former President Ronald Reagan, the current record holder, assumed the office at age 69.

Former “NBC Nightly News” anchor Tom Brokaw pushed back Friday against reports that he wants his embattled successor, Brian Williams, to be fired for falsely claiming to have been aboard a helicopter that came under rocket-propelled grenade fire in Iraq.
“I have neither demanded nor suggested Brian be fired,” Brokaw said in an email to The Huffington Post. “His future is up to Brian and NBC News executives.”
NBC News President Deborah Turness told staff in an email Friday afternoon that she and Williams had addressed the “Nightly News” team the previous night and a larger group of colleagues that morning.

Plain old bad luck plays a major role in determining who gets cancer and who does not, according to researchers who found that two-thirds of cancer incidence of various types can be blamed on random mutations and not heredity or risky habits like smoking.
The researchers said on Thursday random DNA mutations accumulating in various parts of the body during ordinary cell division are the prime culprits behind many cancer types.
They looked at 31 cancer types and found that 22 of them, including leukemia and pancreatic, bone, testicular, ovarian and brain cancer, could be explained largely by these random mutations – essentially biological bad luck.
