When New York Magazine posed the terrifying question, “Have You Eaten Your Last Avocado?” in an article published Wednesday, avocado lovers everywhere panicked. Again. It’s no secret that California’s drought, the worst in 1,200 years, is a serious threat to certain foods.
.
No one wants to acknowledge that this precious fruit — yes, avocados are a fruit, because actually they’re a berry — might be a lot more expensive in the coming years. When Chipotle announced last March that its guacamole may be at stake due to climate change, people freaked. More than a year later, however, we’re still enjoying guacamole at Chipotle and elsewhere. Still the threat looms, and a collective hysteria set in again Wednesday.
That’s because, yes, avocados are super trendy. Instagram is reaching peak avocado toast, and one too many Super Bowl fans really just show up at parties for the guacamole. But avocados aren’t the only trendy food that may be affected by the drought. From kale to the almonds that go into everyone’s precious almond milk lattes, other foods-of-the-moment may be more threatened than people realize.

Citing Malaysia’s abysmal slavery record, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) urged the House on Monday to ensure his provision blocking the country’s membership in the Trans-Pacific Partnership makes it into final legislation that would give the president fast-track authority on such agreements.
The bill in question would give President Barack Obama expedited powers to push through Congress trade deals like TPP, which he hopes to seal with 11 Pacific nations.
It’s a change of tune for Menendez, who had worked out a deal with Obama to include modified language in the Senate bill. The newer language, which didn’t make it into the Senate-passed bill, would have allowed Tier 3 nations — the lowest rank that a country engaged in modern-day slavery can receive from the State Department — into Obama’s trade deals.

Joseph “Beau” Biden III, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, has died of brain cancer, the White House announced Saturday evening. He was 46.
“More than his professional accomplishments, Beau measured himself as a husband, father, son and brother,” Joe Biden said in a statement, calling him “quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.”
Beau Biden served as Delaware’s attorney general for eight years from 2007 to 2015. In 2010, he suffered a mild stroke, but recovered and went back to work.

There’s no way to structure this coherently. They are random observations that might help explain the mental processes. But often, I think that we look at the academic problems of poverty and have no idea of the why. We know the what and the how, and we can see systemic problems, but it’s rare to have a poor person actually explain it on their own behalf. So this is me doing that, sort of.
Rest is a luxury for the rich. I get up at 6AM, go to school (I have a full course load, but I only have to go to two in-person classes) then work, then I get the kids, then I pick up my husband, then I have half an hour to change and go to Job 2. I get home from that at around 12:30AM, then I have the rest of my classes and work to tend to. I’m in bed by 3. This isn’t every day, I have two days off a week from each of my obligations. I use that time to clean the house and soothe Mr. Martini and see the kids for longer than an hour and catch up on schoolwork. Those nights I’m in bed by midnight, but if I go to bed too early I won’t be able to stay up the other nights because I’ll fuck my pattern up, and I drive an hour home from Job 2 so I can’t afford to be sleepy. I never get a day off from work unless I am fairly sick. It doesn’t leave you much room to think about what you are doing, only to attend to the next thing and the next. Planning isn’t in the mix.

Most of us would rather not think about what happens to our bodies after death. But that breakdown gives birth to new life in unexpected ways, writes Moheb Costandi.
“It might take a little bit of force to break this up,” says mortician Holly Williams, lifting John’s arm and gently bending it at the fingers, elbow and wrist. “Usually, the fresher a body is, the easier it is for me to work on.”
Williams speaks softly and has a happy-go-lucky demeanor that belies the nature of her work. Raised and now employed at a family-run funeral home in north Texas, she has seen and handled dead bodies on an almost daily basis since childhood. Now 28 years old, she estimates that she has worked on something like 1,000 bodies.

On Oct. 24, 2001, then-House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) shepherded the Patriot Act through the House of Representatives. It passed 357 to 66, advancing to the Senate and then-President George W. Bush’s desk for signing.
Hastert took credit for House passage in a 2011 interview, claiming it “wasn’t popular, and there was a lot of fight in the Congress” over it.
Little did Hastert know at the time that the law he helped pass would give federal law enforcement the tools to indict him on charges of violating banking-related reporting requirements more than a decade later.

A body found in the Hudson River on Saturday could be that of the New York kayaker who went missing last month.
Forensic scientist Michael Archer told NBC New York that the body is believed to be that of 46-year-old Vincent Viafore, who disappeared when his kayak overturned on April 19 in choppy water near Bannerman Island, 50 miles north of New York City.
Viafore’s fiancée, Angelika Graswald, 35, reported him missing after the pair went kayaking in separate vessels. But authorities now believe she was responsible for his death. She has been charged with second-degree murder.

Recovery teams were resuming the search early Tuesday for 12 people who are missing after a rain-swollen river in Central Texas carried a vacation home off its foundation, slamming it into a bridge downstream.
The hunt for the missing picked up after a holiday weekend of terrible storms that dumped record rainfall on the Plains and Midwest, caused major flooding and spawned tornadoes and killed at least eight people in Oklahoma and Texas. More than 1,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed in Texas, and thousands of residents are displaced.
Authorities were also searching for victims and assessing damage just across the Texas-Mexico border in Ciudad Acuna, where a tornado Monday killed 13 people and left at least five unaccounted for.

The Senate handed President Barack Obama a major win Thursday, voting to advance his trade agenda by ending debate on a bill that would grant him the power to fast-track massive new pacts through Congress.
A number of senators objected to the process, complaining that they were unable to get votes on amendments they deemed essential to making sure that looming, still-secret deals with 12 Pacific Rim nations and Europe live up to promises of helping U.S. workers.
But 62 of their colleagues disagreed, and voted to halt debate anyway, setting up passage of the fast-track bill by the end of the week.

Several people were killed Sunday afternoon in a shootout between rival biker gangs outside the Twin Peaks Restaurant in Waco, Texas.
Waco police say eight were killed, another died in the hospital, and 18 were injured as hundreds of bikers from several factions skirmished just after noon in the Central Texas Marketplace.
“There are dead people still there, there is blood everywhere … There are bullet holes in vehicles all over the parking lot,” Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton said at a press conference.
