On Wednesday, archeologists revealed the remains of an ancient arts center underneath Rome dating back to 123 AD, according to the Guardian.
Emperor Hadrian is believed to have funded “the Athenaeum,” as it was known at the time; it was a 900-seat complex created to promote arts and culture, CBS News reports. Archeologists discovered the arts center during excavations for a new subway line to run through the Italian capital.
“Hadrian’s auditorium is the biggest find in Rome since the Forum was uncovered in the 1920s,” said Rossella Rea, an archeologist working on the project.

The partially dug complex, dating back to the 2nd century A.D., is believed to have been funded by Emperor Hadrian.

WEBSTER, N.Y. — Police say the man who lured firefighters in Webster, N.Y., into a deadly ambush had the same make and caliber semiautomatic rifle as the one used in the Connecticut school massacre.
Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Tuesday that 62-year-old William Spengler was armed with a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, a .38-caliber revolver and a 12-gauge shotgun in Monday’s ambush. Spengler killed two firefighters and wounded two others before fatally shooting himself.

Authorities in Nevada are trying to locate a missing child who was in the care of a woman later arrested for stabbing a co-worker at a Las Vegas casino.
Jade Morris, 10, was last seen Friday by family members, when she got into a red, 2007 four-door Saab with her father’s fiancee, 50-year-old Brenda Stokes, also known as Brenda Wilson. Jade’s father was out of town at the time.

CADIZ, Ky. — Ray Burnam ran for sheriff on a pledge to do whatever he could to settle three unresolved slayings in this tranquil corner of Kentucky. He even dangled his own money as a reward, pledging $1,000 for information leading to a conviction in any of the cases.
What the sheriff got in return was a court order demanding he turn over his findings in one case and claims he’s gone “rogue” as part of a spat with state police. The bad feelings may date back to Burnham’s own departure from the state force, have erupted with tense words in open court and, a prosecutor argues, could jeopardize efforts to prosecute one of the cases. It’s an unusually public dispute between law enforcement agencies.

The Cassini spacecraft has taken lots of spectacular photos of Saturn over the eight-plus years it’s been orbiting the ringed gas giant. But a new image released just in time for the holidays may be the most beautiful.
“Of all the many glorious images we have received from Saturn, none are more strikingly unusual than those taken from Saturn’s shadow,” the lead of the Cassini imaging team at the Space Science Institute, Carolyn Porco, said of the new image in a written statement released by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The institute is based in Boulder, Colo.

In a murder mystery fit for prime time, scientists say they have solved the 3,000-year-old killing of one of Egypt’s last great pharaohs.
The first CT scans to examine the king’s mummy reveal a deep cut to the neck, reports the BBC. The cut had been hidden by bandages for centuries. The deep wound 2.7 inches (7cm) wide, was found just under the larynx, and could have caused immediate death, according to medical scientists.
“I have almost no doubt about the fact that Ramses III was killed by this cut in his throat,” said paleopathologist Albert Zink of the EURAC Institute for Mummies and the Iceman in Italy, according to the AFP.

Life for killer whales in the ocean is infinitely different, and many would say far better, than a life of captivity in a concrete tank. In the wild, most orcas stay near or with their families for life, travel up to 100 miles a day, and display complex communal rituals that provide stability, cooperation and regular opportunities for the unbridled expression of sheer joy.
Orcas are smart—among the most intelligent species in the world—making them particularly unsuitable to captivity, as I explain in my book Death at SeaWorld. Few people realize that killer whales are members of the family Delphinidae, making them the planet’s largest dolphins, giant cousins to the far more common bottlenose (think TV’s Flipper) and other species of seagoing dolphins. Orcas not only have the largest brain of any dolphin, but at 12 pounds it is also four times larger than the human brain, and second only to the sperm whale in heft and volume.

Have you ever wondered whether all this–you, your life, the universe–is just a sophisticated computer simulation?
Martin Savage, a physicist at the University of Washington, thinks we can’t discount the idea. In fact, he and two colleagues (Silas Beane and Zohreh Davoudi) published a paper in November 2012 exploring the possibility. I spoke to him about why he thinks we may be the byproduct of some sophisticated computer code.
As we spoke, I noticed he used the word they a lot, when referencing the proposed simulators. I couldn’t help but ask, “who is they?” His answer will blow your mind.
