Crested Butte is a town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Downhill ski and mountain-bike trails crisscross the slopes of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. There are Nordic ski routes around town. The West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway takes in wilderness areas like Kebler Pass, to the west, known for colorful Quaking aspen trees in fall. You know the story. Despite technologies, regulations, and policies to make humanity less of a strain on the earth, people just won’t stop reproducing. By 2050 there will be 9 billion carbon-burning, plastic-polluting, calorie-consuming people on the planet. By 2100, that number will balloon to 11 billion, pushing society into a Soylent Green scenario. Such dire population predictions aren’t the stuff of sci-fi; those numbers come from one of the most trusted world authorities, the United Nations.
But what if they’re wrong? Not like, off by a rounding error, but like totally, completely goofed?
That’s the conclusion Canadian journalist John Ibbitson and political scientist Darrell Bricker come to in their newest book, Empty Planet, due out February 5th. After painstakingly breaking down the numbers for themselves, the pair arrived at a drastically different prediction for the future of the human species. “In roughly three decades, the global population will begin to decline,” they write. “Once that decline begins, it will never end.”

As the Academy goes into late December without a host to replace Kevin Hart at the helm of the 2019 Oscars show, talk has turned to the idea of having a show without a host. It has been done a few times in the past, both in shows in the late ’60s and early ’70s and then again as recently as 1989.
But be careful what you wish for, all you who are proposing a hostless Oscars.
After all, the last Academy Awards show that didn’t have a host, the 61st Oscars in 1989, is widely considered the worst Oscars ever. No, the lack of a host didn’t really have much to do with the show’s multitudinous failures. And no, this year’s producer, Donna Gigliotti, and co-producer and director, Glenn Weiss, aren’t likely to make the kind of mistakes that Allan Carr made back then.

The 2019 Academy Awards ceremony will have no host for the first time in three decades.
After weeks of scrambling to find a replacement for actor and comedian Kevin Hart, who stepped down following backlash over past homophobic comments, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ultimately opted to forgo having a host, ABC Entertainment PR and an academy spokesperson told ABC News on Tuesday.
The academy did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
The academy selected Hart in early December to host the 91st Academy Awards following a prolonged search amid declining ratings for the annual broadcast. The choice quickly came under fire, with critics noting the comedian’s previous tweets and jokes expressing homophobia.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a state park in California, 12 miles south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park on California’s Pacific coast. A main feature of the park is McWay Falls, which drops over a cliff of 80 feet into the Pacific Ocean. The park is also home to 300-foot redwoods which are over 2,500 years old.

Super Bowl commercials played it safe this year: light on the political commentary, heavy on the celebrity spokespeople. There weren’t even that many puppies and babies, unless you count the creepy TurboTax baby robot that longed to become an accountant. But what we lacked in cute animals, we made up for in ‘90s nostalgia, from Stella Artois’s callbacks to “The Big Lebowski” and “Sex and the City,” Doritos’ Backstreet Boys remix, and Olay’s nod to the teen slasher film “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
The ads that stood out this year excelled in the basics: clever wordplay, good comedic timing, tugging at heartstrings without being schmaltzy and unexpected twists. Here are the 10 ads that we thought were the best — excluding The Washington Post’s first Super Bowl ad, of course, because we’re biased toward that one.

Deion Branch was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005.
Now, Julian Edelman has joined them.
Edelman caught 10 passes for 141 yards, with eight going for first downs. He had catches on both of the Patriots’ scoring drives.
Edelman also had one carry for 8 yards.

Like Ol’ Man River, Tom Brady just keeps rolling along.
Brady, 41, the oldest quarterback ever to start a Super Bowl, took a back seat to a dominating defensive performance in the 53rd Super Bowl on Sunday in Atlanta, but he safely steered the New England Patriots to a 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams for his record sixth Super Bowl title.
Brady’s and the Patriots’ sixth championship came on the 17th anniversary of the first, and it was a rematch. The Patriots beat the Rams, then representing St. Louis, by 20-17, setting Brady and coach Bill Belichick off on an unparalleled streak of success that has brought them six National Football League championships. (The Pittsburgh Steelers six Super Bowls came with different coaches and quarterbacks.)
