When I meet other parents, their first question is usually: “Where do your kids go to school?” There are more “advantaged” schools in our town where attendance supposedly equates to higher test scores, better opportunities, and — as the thinking goes — college success.
But I was a university academic advisor for six years. Every year, I heard things like “I’m burned out from high school,” or, “I failed my first test. What should I do?”
These are students who did everything right when it came to preparing for college. Here’s what I’ve come to understand from my years working with students about our markers for success.
AP classes may be overrated
AP classes give students college credit if they get certain scores on expensive AP tests. AP credits usually replace a university’s general education — also known as gen-ed — requirements. If a student comes in with AP English, US History, Economics, Art, and Calculus credits, most of their gen-ed courses are covered.

Palm Springs is a desert resort city in Riverside County, California, United States, within the Colorado Desert’s Coachella Valley. The city covers approximately 94 square miles (240 km2), making it the largest city in Riverside County by land area. With multiple plots in a checkerboard pattern, more than 10% of the city is part of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians reservation land and is the administrative capital of the most populated reservation in California.
The population of Palm Springs was 44,575 as of the 2020 census, but because Palm Springs is a retirement location and a winter snowbird destination, the city’s population triples between November and March.
The city is noted for its mid-century modern architecture, design elements, arts and cultural scene, and recreational activities.
The first humans to settle in the area were the Cahuilla people, who arrived 2,000 years ago. Cahuilla Indians lived here in isolation from other cultures for hundreds of years prior to European contact. They spoke Ivilyuat, which is a Uto-Aztecan language. Numerous prominent and powerful Cahuilla leaders were from the area, including Cahuilla Lion (Chief Juan Antonio). While Palm Canyon was occupied during the winter months, they often moved to cooler Chino Canyon during the summer months. Wikipedia

When Cordelia realized her marriage was over, she didn’t pack up and move out—she went to her then-husband and told him she wanted to start the process of breaking up. Thirteen months of therapy later (individual therapy for herself and her husband, couples therapy together, and therapy for each of their two adolescent children), they finally separated. She remembers a dinner with friends during that time where she cried out of frustration because they insisted she was dragging out the breakup and should just get on with her life. But after a 13-year marriage and two children, Cordelia (who asked that her last name be withheld since her divorce is ongoing) felt that the breakup deserved all the time and counseling necessary for every party involved to move on in the kindest way possible.
“I have to do this the way I think is the right way, which is slowly and carefully, and not rush any decision that I might regret later,” Cordelia told me about her thinking at the time. She remembers the relationship as being good, in many ways: Her ex was faithful, financially secure, and a good father. Ultimately, though, she just didn’t see a future together. Although she and her ex both went into counseling, the idea wasn’t to try to stay together—it was to figure out how to part amicably. Many long-term relationships follow a painfully cliché playbook when they end: Have a big fight; move out; fight over your stuff; never speak again; begin to hate each other; talk badly about each other to your friends; etc. But more people breaking up today are reconsidering the best way to end a relationship, including how to honor their time together.
Breakup counseling has become noticeably more common in recent years, according to Matt Lundquist, a psychotherapist in New York whose practice also specializes in couples therapy. He attributes the rise, yes, in part to Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2014 popularization of the term conscious uncoupling, but also to some of what Cordelia detailed: The idea of what a marriage could and should be has changed. “I think that the barrier to divorce … has gone down,” Lundquist told me. Although many couples used to divorce only under extreme circumstances—infidelity, violence, emotional abuse—he said, more couples today are willing to consider divorce “even in scenarios where things aren’t necessarily dire but are nonetheless not working for them.”

As the reasons for ending relationships change, so too are the ways people end them. (Ben Hickey)

Man o’ War Cove (or Man of War Bay and similar names) lies on the Dorset coast in southern England and is flanked by the rocky, steep, and slightly projecting headlands of Durdle Door to the west and Man O War (or O’ War) Head to the east.
A line of pronounced rocks takes up the far side of the cove at the distance of the great Durdle Door headland to the east; these partially enclose the cove, and have few submerged components, and feature mostly at the east end of the bay — map-recorded as “The Man o’ War”. The line of exposed rocks continues, very intermittently about 100 meters from the shore as the Norman Rock, Pinion Rock, and a cluster around the Ball Stone, along St Oswald’s Bay. It is usually possible to walk along a thin strand of high tide, dry sand linking the cove to the rest of St Oswald’s Bay an area almost entirely visible from the west side of the cove.
The UK Ordnance Survey maps have local bay names at 1:50000 and 1:25000; these record the pronounced crescent as Man o’ War Cove, in turn forming part of St Oswald’s Bay reduced to a long gentle arc to the east, about five times the width of the cove. A technical distinction is possible as to the water rather than the solid features of the crescent, in that the cove the bay encloses is Man o’ War Cove. St Oswald’s Bay is in turn protected from Atlantic surf by south Devon and by closer Portland Bill forming the multi-cove Weymouth Bay, before the even greater recess of Christchurch or Poole Bay which in its greater definition takes in the area of sea east of Swanage on the Purbeck peninsula.
There is a paid parking lot available 300 meters away from the cove. It is also connected to the South West Coast Path, so it is possible to park elsewhere along the trail and access the cove by foot. Wikipedia

The line between what “could” and “should” be kept in the fridge can be furrier than a year-old jar of pesto.
A survey by Which? found that just one in five of the people surveyed checked a condiment’s label to see where it should be stored. Marriages have exploded, families have warred and housemates have done unspeakable things with toothbrushes over the kinds of arguments that can erupt over whether ketchup should be kept in the fridge or the cupboard.
The Love Food Hate Waste campaign has a fairly definitive A-Z of food storage on its website, full of interesting titbits such as “tucking in” your mushrooms under a tea towel in the fridge. Adorable.
According to the site, eggs are best kept in the fridge. Bananas and uncooked pineapple should live in the fruit bowl, but most other fresh fruit and vegetables can be given an extended shelf life by being refrigerated. Just be sure, they suggest, to bring them back up to room temperature before cooking or eating to increase the flavor.

I am the daughter and granddaughter of Indian immigrants. In 1967, my father and grandmother came to the United States from Jhansi, a city in the north of India, to reunite with my grandfather who had arrived three years prior. This was around the time the Civil Rights Act was passed; my grandfather attended graduate school for psychology at DePaul University on a scholarship, with less than $100 in his pocket. In 1995, my mother came to this country, having just married my dad in an arranged marriage. Up to that point, she had never stepped foot on a plane, let alone left India; all she ever knew was in Kanpur.
The story of how my family arrived and found its way in America is a unique one that exemplifies diversity. But based on revelations from Students for Fair Admissions’ challenge to Harvard and the University of North Carolina’s race-conscious admissions policies, cases that have oral arguments before the Supreme Court on Monday, it seems neither of these schools would agree with me.
They, along with many other elite universities in the U.S., seem to have decided that because Asian American enrollment at their schools exceeds the Asian American share of the population, stories like mine don’t count as “diverse.” Instead, the stories of “underrepresented” racial minorities tend to count more as the diversity in which universities have a compelling interest, the rationale for racial preferences today.

Writing for the Daily Beast, Epner predicted a ruling from the three judges involved — two of whom were appointed by the former president — could come before the end of the week and could quickly thrust the former president before his “greatest nightmare”: a Washington D.C. jury.
Based upon the questioning of the judges last week where Trump’s legal team faced a brutal grilling, the legal analyst suggested the case would be stripped from the Trump-appointed Cannon, who has been accused of running interference for the man who appointed her to a lifetime position on the bench.
“I rarely make predictions on court rulings. This is the exception,” Epner wrote. “I would be shocked if the 11th Circuit does not overturn Judge Cannon’s order. I also think it will happen quickly. The judges have asked for the upcoming schedule in front of the Special Master.”
“Special Master Dearie is required to issue his report and recommendation to Judge Cannon by December 16. After that, the parties would have the opportunity to object to Judge Cannon and, if necessary, the 11th Circuit,” he added. “That process would take months to play out. I cannot imagine the 11th Circuit allowing this circus to continue until Dec. 1, and that’s part of why I expect that the 11th Circuit will promptly overrule Judge Cannon, ending the entire process.”
As for what comes after, the legal analyst speculated Trump’s lawyers would quickly run to the Supreme Court for relief and will be promptly rebuffed.
