Unrivalled control of a robotic arm has been achieved using a paralysed woman’s thoughts, a US study says.
Jan Scheuermann, who is 53 and paralysed from the neck down, was able to deftly grasp and move a variety of objects just like a normal arm.
Brain implants were used to control the robotic arm, in the study reported in the Lancet medical journal.
Experts in the field said it was an “unprecedented performance” and a “remarkable achievement”.

After the horrifying shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school last week, people seem to be asking the same questions: What kind of person could open fire on innocent children? Why do such incidents keep happening? And what can we do to prevent such crimes?
We may never know what spurred the man who killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, and whether he could have been stopped.
But psychologists have created profiles of mass shooters, and many common themes — and even warning signs — emerge.
.

Psychologists say that people who commit mass shootings often have a consistent profile.

A quick-thinking music teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School found a secure spot for her students as soon as she heard the first salvo from the shooter’s gun.
Killer Adam Lanza arrived moments later at their locked closet door, pounding and yelling “Let me in,” while the students in Maryrose Kristopik’s class quietly hid inside, AFP reported.
“We were all really scared and then we prayed,” said 9-year-old Nicholas Sabillon, who was interviewed with his parents. “Miss Kristopik gave us all lollipops. We thought it would be our last snack.”

Connecticut’s chief medical examiner said he hopes Adam Lanza’s biology will help explain why the Sandy Hook shooter went on a deadly rampage.
The Hartford Courant reports that Dr. H. Wayne Carver has asked a geneticist at the University of Connecticut to join in his investigation of the killings.
“I’m exploring with the department of genetics what might be possible, if anything is possible,” Carver told the paper on Tuesday. “Is there any identifiable disease associated with this behavior?”

With chatter about the Mayan apocalypse intensifying as Dec. 21 approaches, you may have seen that while the ancient Mayan calendar “ends” on that day, the Maya themselves would not have seen that as the end of the world. But how does the Mayan calendar work, anyway?
It’s not as confusing as it might seem. The ancient Maya kept time in a very different way than we do today, and their hieroglyph-heavy calendar can seem daunting at first glance. But the basic principle is simply that the Maya were counting the days.
.

The Mayan Long Count Calendar, which did not predict a doomsday, included dates
written out as five hieroglyphs separated by four periods.

HTML5 holds great potential for creating interactive in-browser experiences, but wielding its power typically requires assorted web design skills and a good handle on JavaScript. However, Jake Lodwick — who had a hand in creating Vimeo and College Humor — is making an effort to lower the barriers holding back internet denizens from crafting web-based animations. Moonbase, the first project of Lodwick’s new company, Elepath, replaces hand coding with a visual editor that enables users to create animations with custom text, images, colors, movements and more.

SINCE broadband began its inexorable spread at the start of this millenium, Internet use has expanded at a cosmic rate. Last year, the number of Internet users topped 2.4 billion — more than a third of all humans on the planet. The time spent on the screen was 16 hours per week globally — double that in high-use countries, and much of that on social media. We have changed how we interact. Are we also changing what we are?
We put that question to three people who have written extensively on the subject, and brought them together to discuss it with Serge Schmemann, the editor of this magazine. The participants: Susan Greenfield, professor of synaptic pharmacology at Oxford. She has written and spoken widely on the impact of new technology on users’ brains.

More people fear getting cancer than Alzheimer’s and heart disease combined, according to research from the MetLife Foundation.
For half of all men and a third of all women in the United States, that fear will come true. But it doesn’t have to be that way, says David Agus, MD, world-renowned oncologist and author of the best-selling book The End of Illness.
Agus, who was on the team of doctors that treated Steve Jobs, said he believes we can win the war on cancer — but not the way we’re fighting it now.
“We’ve made almost no impact on making people live longer with cancer,” he says in an interview for Daily Dose With Jillian Michaels, noting that the death rate is down only 8 percent over the past six decades.
