Lost comet lander awakes, sends ‘hello’ from space

Many moons ago, a small space probe named Philae skipped across the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko when the lander’s harpoon-like anchoring mechanism failed. It came to rest in a shady spot and, without enough sunlight to keep it powered, it fell asleep after about 60 hours of operation.

Mission scientists had been trying to pinpoint its location since November — until late Saturday.

At 10:28 p.m., the European Space Agency’s operations center in Darmstadt, Germany, just south of Frankfurt, received a signal from Philae, which transmitted more than 300 data packets. Those have been analyzed at the Lander Control Center at the German Aerospace Center, which dubbed Philae’s emergence from its seven-month slumber a “‘hello’ from space.”

Historic! Europe’s Philae Probe Lands on Comet 317 Million Miles Away

After a suspense-packed, seven-hour descent, the European Space Agency’s Philae lander made an unprecedented touchdown on the surface of a comet Wednesday — marking the high point of a $1.3 billion, 10-year mission.

Cheers erupted as the confirming signals were received at the European Space Operations Center in Darmstadt, Germany, at 11:03 a.m. ET. The signals took 28 minutes to travel at the speed of light over the 317 million miles (510 million kilometers) between Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and Earth.

“It is sitting on the surface,” reported Stefan Ulamec, Philae lander manager at the DLR German Aerospace Center. “Philae is talking to us — we are on the comet!”

NASA calls it the most colorful image ever captured by the Hubble Space Telescope–and the most comprehensive. It has to be one of the most spectacular.

But the image–the remarkable payoff of a new survey called the Ultraviolet Coverage of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field–is more than merely beautiful. It may also help fill in some gaps in our understanding of how stars form.

There’s a lot of stuff floating around our planet, including dangerous space junk as well as working satellites. But scientists are floating some creative ideas for cleaning up all the debris.

Australian scientists have proposed zapping the debris with lasers. And last month, the European Space Agency proposed its e.DeOrbit mission, which would capture debris with a net or harpoon.

No matter what method gets the nod, clean-up crews are facing a huge challenge. Just check out these European Space Agency images showing all of the objects currently in low-Earth orbit:

Comet-Chasing Probe Sends Signal to Earth

A comet-chasing space probe that has been in hibernation for almost three years has woken up and sent its first signal back to Earth.
.

The European Space Agency received the all-clear message “Hello World!” from its Rosetta spacecraft some 800 million kilometers (500 million miles) away shortly after 7 p.m. (1800 GMT; 1 p.m. EST).

Rosetta was put into hibernation in 2011 to conserve energy for its long journey to meet with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

If all goes as planned the probe will rendezvous with the comet in the coming months and drop a lander onto its icy surface in November.

Rosetta is named after a block of stone that allowed archeologists to decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Scientists hope the probe’s findings will help them understand the composition of comets and thereby discover more about the origins and evolution of our solar system.

A new video lets viewers experience the sensation of flying over the Martian surface based on actual topographical data taken by a European satellite orbiting the red planet.

The mountains, craters, ancient river beds and lava flows that mark the Martian landscape are visible in images from a stereographic camera aboard ESA’s Mars Express probe.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) released the video as part of celebrations commemorating ten years since Mars Express launched in June 2003, and the DLR’s Stephan Elgner, a member of the mission’s planetary cartography team, wrote the original soundtrack.

Mars Express has so far orbited the planet nearly 12,500 times, building up an almost planet-wide digital topographical model.

NASA is well-known for the awesome space photos snapped by its spacecraft and astronauts—in fact, the administration has an entire website devoted just to space imagery. But it’s not the only space agency known for spectacular photos of the cosmos.

The European Space Agency (ESA), an organization comprised of 20 member states, has collected more than its share of eye-popping multimedia. From the Cassini-Huygens probe’s austere photos of Saturn and its moons to Envisat’s visions of our own planet, images from ESA spacecraft span the whole wondrous range of space science.

Engineers are battling to save the European Space Agency’s (Esa) flagship Earth observation mission – Envisat.

Controllers say the eight-tonne spacecraft appears to be in a stable condition, but they are not receiving any data at all from it.

Contact was lost with Envisat at the weekend shortly after it downloaded pictures of Spain’s Canary Islands.
