A Russian passenger plane carrying 224 people crashed in the Sinai peninsula Saturday, killing all on board, officials said.
Egypt’s government said the plane disappeared about 25 minutes after takeoff from the airport in Sharm el-Sheikh — a popular tourist destination — en route for St. Petersburg. The Airbus A321 operated by Metrojet had 217 passengers and seven crew on board. Seventeen children were among the dead, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Egyptian Air Force planes later spotted wreckage from the missing airliner close to al Hassana, in a mountainous area of the Sinai peninsula, according to a statement from the government which said 45 ambulances had been dispatched to the crash site.

King Tut’s tomb may be hiding a huge secret.
Egyptian officials said on Monday there’s evidence of two hidden chambers behind the tomb’s famous painted walls — and one expert believes those secret rooms could be the long-lost final resting place of Queen Nefertiti.
Monday’s inspection of the walls of the 3,300-year-old tomb revealed scratches and other markings.
“This indicates that the western and northern walls of Tutankhamun’s tomb could hide two burial chambers,” Mamdouh Eldamaty, Egypt’s antiquities minister, told Ahram Online.

Hollywood actor Omar Sharif who rose to fame for his roles in “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Doctor Zhivago” has died. He was 83.
He passed away in Cairo on Friday afternoon after suffering a heart attack, his agent told NBC News.
He was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. His best friend, Egypt’s former Antiquities Minister, Zahi Hawass, described how the illness had taken hold in recent years.

Egyptian warplanes struck Islamic State targets in Libya on Monday in swift retribution for the extremists’ beheading of a group of Egyptian Christian hostages on a beach, shown in a grisly online video released hours earlier.

A long-lost gospel that casts Judas as a co-conspirator of Jesus, rather than a betrayer, was ruled most likely authentic in 2006. Now, scientists reveal they couldn’t have made the call without a series of far more mundane documents, including Ancient Egyptian marriage licenses and property contracts.
The Gospel of Judas is a fragmented Coptic (Egyptian)-language text that portrays Judas in a far more sympathetic light than did the gospels that made it into the Bible. In this version of the story, Judas turns Jesus over to the authorities for execution upon Jesus’ request, as part of a plan to release his spirit from his body. In the accepted biblical version of the tale, Judas betrays Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
