Required watching (and reading) to answer your questions after seeing HBO’s “Leaving Neverland.”
We can’t say that Michael Jackson we hear described in “Leaving Neverland” is a man entirely foreign to us. The searing tales from the documentary’s two subjects are of course shocking. But such tales have come out before.
And Jackson himself: We have always known how weird he was, and most of us suspected that at least some of his behavior — the excessive facial surgery and his odd friendships with kids, for starters — hid deeper and darker secrets.
If you’re coming in new to the Jackson story, or if Dan Reed’s documentary left you with more questions than you started with, here is a list of required watching and reading to fill in the gaps. See and hear how the drama that was Michael played out over the years — and watch how the brightest star in the world began to flicker and finally go out.

Love don’t cost a thing but a gigantic diamond ring. Well, at least for Jennifer Lopez and her beau Alex Rodriguez.
The couple got engaged on Saturday night, according to a pair of matching Instagram posts shared by the iconic singer and former New York Yankees shortstop.
In the intimate photo, Rodgriquez’ hand is holding Lopez’, which is adorned with a massive diamond ring on her left ring finger.
In her caption, Lopez, 49, left a row of heart emojis while Rodriguez, 43, typed, “She said yes.”

If you are going to get your information regarding abortion from anyone, perhaps it is best not to get it from an institution that has no women in its higher orders, and is keeping women as sex slaves.
Like, for instance, the Catholic Church. This week Pope Francis admitted there has been clerical abuse of nuns, including sexual slavery. The BBC reports, “He said the Church was attempting to address the problem but said it was ‘still going on.'”
Holy shit.
For anyone who says, “What does that have to do with abortion?” Well, abortion is an issue that concerns women’s right to self-determination, a key issue in human rights that women make choices regarding their own bodies. The Catholic Church, given it now admits to forcing some nuns to be sex slaves, doesn’t seem well positioned to lecture on what women should or should not do with their bodies. Honestly, the Church seems to have a terrible track record in that regard, whether we’re looking at this week’s scandal or the relatively recent horror of Magdalene laundries.

Machu Picchu is an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it’s renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar, intriguing buildings that play on astronomical alignments and panoramic views. Its exact former use remains a mystery.

I aspire to live an incredibly long, happy, and healthy life.
That is why I recently read The Blue Zones Solution, in which New York Times best-selling author Dan Buettner reveals the eating and living habits of the world’s longest-lived people.
For over a decade, Buettner (along with the National Geographic Society and a team of researchers) studied the 5 locations around the globe that have the highest concentrations of 100-year-olds, as well as exceptionally low rates of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, and heart problems.
In the book, Buettner lays out the specifics for each of these “Blue Zones” locations, analyzes the trends, and then prescribes a plan for people looking achieve the same level of health and longevity.

Where the state of Nevada folds in half—from the elbow on its western arm at Lake Tahoe across to its Utah border—you’ll find the most direct route across the state. It crosses several communities, a handful of mountain ranges, a national park, and one reservoir, where bobcats, foxes, and wild horses roam free. There’s life, yes, but not a familiar way of life for many. It’s a place where the lines between John Wayne Westerns and everyday life blur, where ghost towns bleed into living ones. This is Route 50, the Loneliest Road in America.
Or so says Life magazine. In July 1986, the publication honored the Statue of Liberty’s 100th birthday and highlighted American superlatives: On one page, the “Cutest” (a toddler actor) appears alongside the “Loneliest Road” below a photo of a seemingly endless highway that reaches across the desert toward the mountains, a lone cowboy on horseback crossing from one side of nothingness to the other. An anonymous AAA counselor is quoted in the article: “We warn all motorists not to drive there, unless they’re confident of their survival skills.”

Wilhelmina Bay is a bay 24 kilometres (15 mi) wide between the Reclus Peninsula and Cape Anna along the west coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula. It was discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897-99 led by Adrien de Gerlache. The bay is named for Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands, who reigned from 1890 to 1948.
Wilhelmina Bay is dubbed “Whale-mina Bay” for its large number of humpback whales. It is a popular destination for tourist expedition ships to Antarctica thanks to its abundant whale population and spectacular scenery. The bay is surrounded by steep cliffs full of snow and glaciers. An almost perfect pyramid-shaped peak towers over the water.

One fundamental and unanswered question in obesity research is what kind of foods contribute most to the condition. Experts variously blame, for example, fatty or sugary fare or foods that lack protein, which may prompt us, unconsciously, to overeat. Plenty of anecdotal evidence can be marshaled against any of the culprits, but there has been little long-term, large-scale experimental research on people’s comparative eating habits. It is neither ethical nor practical to have healthy subjects gorge themselves on one diet for years until they are obese.
