China’s recycling ban has sent America’s plastic to Malaysia. Now they don’t want it — so what next?

Dozens of laborers and factory operators sit hand-cuffed in rows on the pavement at an industrial park in Malaysia.

They’ve been detained in a government raid on unlicensed plastic recyclers as the country seeks to curb a growing illicit industry.
.
“It’s illegal,” said Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysia’s Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, who attended the raid and had invited journalists to watch.
.
“It’s against the Environmental Quality Act because they do not have licenses and they are polluting.”
.
Malaysia is cracking down on opportunists who are trying to cash-in on China’s decision last year to ban plastic waste imports. Since July 2018, officials have shut down at least 148 unlicensed plastic recycling factories — but have only pressed charges against a handful of suspects.

Insurer sent $33,000 to a man struggling with addiction. He used the cash to go on a binge — and died

Jennifer Alba sifts through the boxes of photographs and documents. It’s a collection of what once was, and what her life has become. A mother sorting through pain.

There’s her son, Joseph, as an infant, smiling, dressed in a onesie with his bright blue eyes matching the blue backdrop. He was her firstborn, a gift who came into her life when she was just 17.
.
Not too far away lies the document from a middle school recommending that he be suspended for the last few weeks of school after being caught with marijuana. He was 13.
.
It was the start of a lifelong struggle with drug abuse that his mother desperately wanted him to break. Over the next 16 years, Alba says, her son spent dozens of nights in jails, cycled through nearly 20 stints in rehab and served two prison terms.

Credit freezes are now free. Here’s why you might want one

.

Many experts agree that freezing your credit report is the strongest way to protect against identity theft.

Starting Friday, you’ll be able to do it free of charge.
.
In the wake of a massive data breach last year at Equifax that exposed personal information for about 148 million Americans, Congress amended the Fair Credit Reporting Act to require reporting agencies to freeze reports for no charge. Equifax is one of the three major credit reporting agencies in the United States.
.
Identity thieves can use information in your credit report to open credit cards and bank accounts, and take out loans.

Three babies were among five people stabbed early Friday at an unlicensed day care center in New York by an employee who then tried to kill herself, officials said.

The victims — two girls and a boy, plus two adults — were in critical but stable condition Friday at local hospitals, New York police said.
.
The babies range in age from 3 days to 1 month, New York police Assistant Chief Juanita Holmes told reporters Friday.
.
The facility was used mostly by Chinese women who give birth and stay there before returning to China, a law enforcement source tells CNN.

Stacey Abrams wins Democratic primary in Georgia. She could become the nation’s first black woman governor.

.

Stacey Abrams will win the Democratic primary in Georgia’s gubernatorial race Tuesday, CNN projects, becoming the first black woman in the nation to hold a major party’s nomination for governor.

If she wins in November, she will become the country’s first black female governor.
The former state House minority leader defeated former state Rep. Stacey Evans, who ran a campaign that tried to appeal to moderates and independent voters.
Abrams, who grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi, as one of six children, told CNN’s Kyung Lah in an interview before the election she was aware that “as an African-American woman, I will be doing something no one else has done.”

Often close but never the closer in grand slams, Caroline Wozniacki finally got the job done. Her wait is over.

Wozniacki won her first grand slam title Saturday when she beat Simona Halep 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 in an eventful, absorbing Australian Open final that lasted nearly three hours in the draining Melbourne heat.
.
Indeed the heat rule was implemented for the first time during the fortnight despite higher temperatures in week one. Both players took medical timeouts and a pair of games lasted longer than 10 minutes as the athleticism of the world’s two highest-ranked players was on show at Rod Laver Arena.

Billed as a blockbuster battle in the buildup, no one would dare say it disappointed.

One morning in 1998, US District Court Judge Walter Smith called a deputy clerk into his chambers in the Waco, Texas, courthouse and closed the door behind her.

“He basically came over to me and put his arms around me and kissed me, and I just froze. I couldn’t move,” the woman said in a deposition. “And he said, ‘Let me make love to you.’ And I just freaked out. … And then he pulled me to him again, and he kissed me again and stuck his tongue down my throat, and he pressed himself against me. … And then he started to try touch my breasts, and I kind of pushed away and said … ‘I need to go.'”
 .
The next day, Smith sent her a dozen yellow roses.

In recent months, powerful men in Hollywood, the media, Congress and other spheres have been accused of sexual harassment. A common theme has been men abusing their positions in settings where women feel they have no recourse.

Jeff Flake’s 20 most damning lines about Donald Trump’s assault on the press

.

Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake came to the Senate floor Wednesday with a simple message for Donald Trump: Stop attacking the media.

The speech, which Flake had previewed over the weekend, was the first of what the Arizona Republican has promised will be a series of addresses over 2018 aimed at noting the abnormalities of the Trump presidency.
.
Critics have cast Flake as something of a sore loser — a Republican whose strong anti-Trump stance lost him the confidence of voters in his state. (Flake announced he would retire at the end of this year after a series of polls suggested he would have a very difficult time winning a second term.)
.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday that Flake’s speech was the result of his “poll numbers,” adding that the Arizona senator served as a “mouthpiece” for Cuba’s regime by recently making a trip to that country.
