For years now, a steady slew of headlines have warned about the dangers of methamphetamine addiction, with many calling meth (nicknamed “ice,” “crystal,” or “crank”) the most dangerous drug in America.
However, according to new research from Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), when it comes to sheer deadliness, there’s an even bigger threat out there than meth: opioids.

A team of mind readers can now pinpoint exactly when a rat feels uncertain about its choices, simply by measuring its brain activity.
Doubt, they’ve discovered, creeps into the mind slowly. It starts with a few nerve cells near the front of the brain that get themselves into a tizzy. More and more cells join in, until a line is crossed and the mental maelstrom shakes up established patterns of brain activity — allowing rats, and possibly humans as well, to question their old beliefs about the world and explore new options, researchers report in the Oct. 5 issue of the journal Science.

The rusty old canister had been buried for 40 years, but there was something about it that caught the eye of Larry Wright, a 69-year-old resident of Oakland, Calif.
Hiking near Milestone Mountain in Sequoia National Park with his son Aaron and grandson, Skyler, Wright came across what appeared to be a film canister buried in the soil on Sept. 8, reports the Los Angeles Times.

“For the first time we get to see what may be actual records kept by a scribe, whose job was to be official record keeper of a Maya community. It’s like an episode of TV’s ‘Big Bang Theory,’ a geek math problem and they’re painting on the wall. They seem to be using it like a blackboard.”
That’s Boston University archaeologist William Saturno talking about a new excavation of an ancient Mayan structure hidden in a rain forest in Guatemala’s Peten region, according to a written statement released by the National Geographic Society. The society supported the excavation, which Saturno led.

The so-called Maiden mummy of a 15-year-old Incan girl who was sacrificed 500 years ago is giving up some secrets, revealing the teenager suffered from a bacterial lung infection at the time of her death, scientists report.
The researchers analyzed tissue proteins, rather than DNA, from the Maiden and another young Inca mummy who died at the same time.
