Divers pulled three people alive from inside an overturned cruise ship and searched for other survivors Tuesday, state media said, giving some small hope amid an apparently massive tragedy with well over 400 people still missing on the Yangtze River.
Fifteen people were brought to safety and at least five people were confirmed dead after the Eastern Star capsized in Hubei Province during a severe storm Monday night with 458 people aboard, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The cruise was from Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing, and many of those aboard were elderly.
“Looks like we are in trouble,” tour guide Zhang Hui, 43, recalled telling a colleague. In an interview with Xinhua from his hospital bed, he said rain pounded the ship, seeping into cabins, and that heavy listing sent bottles rolling off tables before the ship suddenly went all the way over.

Employment in the global renewable energy industry has increased by over one million jobs during the past year, according to a new report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). 7.7 million people are now employed in renewable energy, an 18 percent increase on last year’s 6.5 million.
The renewable energy sector is continuing to grow rapidly across the world, especially in China where wind recently surpassed nuclear to become the country’s third largest source of electricity generation. Given the scope of its green energy ambitions, it comes as little surprise that China has the most renewable energy jobs of any country worldwide – approximately 3.4 million.

The 4.6 metre long submarine was built using parts from a small yacht and took Zhang and his friends 25 days to build. According to Zhang the submarine can travel for 20km/h for 10 hours. Zhang used to be the apprentice of Li Yuming, a local renowned submarine enthusiast who built 7 submarines in the past five years.

At the resplendent China World Hotel in Beijing, scores of cameras snapped as colorful confetti floated down from the ceiling. It was Aug. 11, 2005, and this was the global coming-out party for Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce upstart. After months of frantic negotiations, the American Internet giant Yahoo had agreed to invest $1 billion in cash and create deeper business ties, in exchange for a 40 percent stake in Alibaba.
Alibaba’s founder, Jack Ma, thin, energetic and standing just over five feet tall, was beaming. He gushed that it was China’s Valentine’s Day and this was a beautiful match: “You’d be foolish if you said no.” It was his coming-out party too; the partnership would pave the way for Alibaba to become an international juggernaut.

The girlfriend of an American passenger aboard missing Flight MH370 told NBC News she has been the victim of two break-ins, a death threat and numerous unsettling phone calls since the jet vanished.
Sarah Bajc received an instant message warning that “I’m going to come and kill you next” about two weeks after the Malaysia Airlines plane disappeared on March 8. Several pornographic images and creepy phone calls were also received from the same China-based number.
Bajc was preparing to move from Beijing to live with passenger Philip Wood, a 50-year-old Texas native and IBM Malaysia employee, in Kuala Lumpur at the time of the tragedy.

Google’s years-long spat with Beijing just began a new chapter.
The company has begun encrypting searches made by people in China, where Google has long run afoul of regulations designed to keep a tight lid on searches deemed inappropriate.
Google’s encryption of searches in China reportedly will prevent the “Great Firewall of China” from detecting when users search for scandalous terms like “Tiananmen Square” or “Dalai Lama.” China could just out and block Google altogether, but short of doing that, the country likely will have trouble controlling Google searches as it has in the past.

The fast-growing economies of China and India are driving a global increase in meat consumption, cancelling out decreases elsewhere, according to a comprehensive study of global food consumption.
The work, published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, takes a detailed look at what people eat, as well as trends from one country to the next. It is also the first time that researchers have calculated humanity’s trophic level, a metric used in ecology to position species in the food chain.
The metric puts plants and algae, which make their own food, at trophic level 1. Rabbits, which eat plants, occupy level 2. Foxes, which eat herbivores, sit at trophic level 3. Cod, a fish that eats other fish, claims level 4. Polar bears and orcas, which have few or no predators and eat other mammals with gusto, hold the top positions — levels up to 5.5.

China on Saturday successfully carried out the world’s first soft landing of a space probe on the moon in nearly four decades, state media said, the next stage in an ambitious space program that aims to eventually put a Chinese astronaut on the moon.
The unmanned Chang’e 3 lander, named after a mythical Chinese goddess of the moon, touched down on Earth’s nearest neighbor following a 12-minute landing process.
The probe carried a six-wheeled moon rover called “Yutu,” or “Jade Rabbit,” the goddess’ pet. After landing Saturday evening on a fairly flat, Earth-facing part of the moon, the rover was slated to separate from the Chang’e eight hours later and embark on a three-month scientific exploration.
China’s space program is an enormous source of pride for the country, the third to carry out a lunar soft landing — which does not damage the craft and the equipment it carries — after the United States and the former Soviet Union. The last one was by the Soviet Union in 1976.
