Jason Shron from Rapido Trains Inc. loves VIA trains so much, he built a full-size train in his basement. Not just a copy, but a real train with the real interior and exterior of the original train! Some would call him crazy, some would appreciate his obsession with something he truly loves. We, frankly, can’t decide which…

A few months ago, Philadelphia-based graphic design artist Charlie Layton was eating breakfast when he realized the refrigerator in his rental apartment was made from a similar material to a dry erase board. He decided to doodle a picture on the smooth surface of the freezer door, and posted the photo of the drawing to Facebook.
His sketches were so well received by his friends, that Layton made it a weekly routine to draw on his refrigerator and upload a photo of the freezer art — what Layton calls “Freezer Fridays.”

HONG KONG — Shark fin traders in Hong Kong have laid out thousands of fins on rooftops in what appears to be a move to escape public scrutiny of their industry.
Thousands of the freshly cut fins were seen blanketing the roof of an industrial building in Hong Kong this week.
Environmental campaigner Gary Stokes, who took the first photos of the drying on Jan. 1, said Friday that the traders usually dried their fins on the sidewalks. He suspected that the traders went upstairs to avoid pressure from concerned passers-by.

As 2012 comes to a close, some might wonder what is looming sky-wise for 2013.What celestial events might we look forward to seeing?
I’ve selected what I consider the top 13″skylights” (get it?) for the coming year, and have listed them in chronological order. Not all these night sky events will be visible from any one locality (you may have to travel to catch all the eclipses), but you can observe many of them from the comfort of your backyard, weather permitting.

On Wednesday, archeologists revealed the remains of an ancient arts center underneath Rome dating back to 123 AD, according to the Guardian.
Emperor Hadrian is believed to have funded “the Athenaeum,” as it was known at the time; it was a 900-seat complex created to promote arts and culture, CBS News reports. Archeologists discovered the arts center during excavations for a new subway line to run through the Italian capital.
“Hadrian’s auditorium is the biggest find in Rome since the Forum was uncovered in the 1920s,” said Rossella Rea, an archeologist working on the project.

In background, the Vittoriano monument to the unknown soldier. Italian archeologists unveiled Wednesday the site discovered during excavations of a bustling downtown piazza in preparation for a new subway line. The partially dug complex, dating back to the 2nd century A.D., is believed to have been funded by Emperor Hadrian.

by Meredith Galante and Gus Lubin As the world plunges head first into a New Gilded Age, we’re taking a look back at the first Gilded Age. One of the most impressive figures of this era was an immigrant textile worker who became the richest man in the world. We’re talking about the mighty Andrew Carnegie.

We’ve seen some pretty cool tree houses in our time but this one definitely tops them. It’s 10 stories high, 10,000 square feet, took 11 years to build and was, well, commissioned by God.
Devout builder, landscape architect and ordained minister Horace Burgess, of Crossville, Tenn., says he (much like the biblical figure Noah) was asked by the Lord himself to build the sprawling wooden home in which he now lives.

The gothic buildings of Brussel’s Grand Place have been given an extraordinary jolt of color this week, as volunteers constructed a giant floral carpet made from 600,000 begonias in the square’s open space. Created as a tribute to African tapestry weavers the 1,800 square meter artwork is expected to be viewed by 100,000 people this weekend.
