Loyalty, unease in Trump’s Midwest

After eight years of displeasure with the presidency of Barack Obama and faced with a choice between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, Dennis Schminke of Austin, Minn., didn’t have to think hard about how he would vote in 2016. A retired corporate manager, a staunch conservative and a county Republican official, he supported the New York businessman.

Since then, there has not been a day that Schminke wished that Clinton, rather than Trump, were president. But week by week, month by month, as he has watched the events of Trump’s presidency, he has become increasingly conflicted and concerned about what he has seen. The turmoil, he said, has often left him feeling “motion sick.”

By early spring, he expressed a different sentiment. He had not fully broken, but he was no longer as emotionally invested in the president or a reconstituted Trumpian Republican Party. “I find myself drawing back a bit,” he said.

The 5 most expensive drugs in the United States

In January 2017, President Donald Trump accused the pharmaceutical industry of “getting away with murder” with high price increases, and promised to do something about it. He’s set to share his plan to do so Friday.

The amount Americans spend on prescription drugs has nearly doubled since the 1990s, a 2017 government investigation found, meaning the United States spends the most of any high-income nation. List prices rose 6% over the past 12 months alone, according to the prescription website GoodRx. Medicare drug prices soared 10 times the rate of inflation.
.
Americans didn’t always spend the most. In the 1980s, several countries spent equally, but US spending grew faster in the 1990s, according to a 2017 analysis from the Commonwealth Fund. This was partially because several expensive specialty drugs came to market, and because drug companies that set the price in the United States, unlike in Europe, which has price controls.

‘This Bill Is Killing Us’: 9 Sex Workers On Their Lives In The Wake Of FOSTA

.

On April 11, the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA), which says websites can be held legally liable if their users post ads for prostitution, was signed into law. In the lead-up to its passage, the bill was responsible for the closure of a host of advertising and review sites used by sex workers, most prominently Craigslist Personals and Backpage, the latter of which was seized and shut down by the FBI.

The bill was intended to fight sex trafficking, but it has had a dangerous effect on the many sex workers who have consensually chosen the profession and who relied on the internet and its tools to keep themselves safe and make a living.

For many consensual sex workers, losing these free or low-cost advertising platforms means losing the ability to work indoors and the ability to screen clients ― two major factors that contribute to a sex worker’s overall safety. (People being forced or coerced into prostitution also benefit from client screening and not having to work on the streets, the bill’s opponents point out.)

Sex workers also rely on the safety tool of communal “bad date lists” ― websites where sex workers share information on bad or dangerous clients. Sex workers say these too are being shut down in the wake of FOSTA’s passage.

This is why everyday racial profiling is so dangerous

The headlines pop up with alarming frequency: People of color going about their daily business — shopping, golfing, moving in — only to have the cops called on them.

But for every story that makes the news, there are countless others that don’t involve police. Black customers who get followed too closely by store employees. Hispanic students and Muslims who get asked if they’re really American.

This is everyday racial profiling — and it doesn’t just hurt the victims. It has an insidious ripple effect on the rest of society — in business, health and public safety.

A Black Yale Student Was Napping, and a White Student Called the Police

A black graduate student at Yale who fell asleep in her dorm’s common room said she had a disturbing awakening this week when a white student flipped on the lights, told her she had no right to sleep there and called the campus police.

It was the latest in a string of recent episodes across the country in which the police have been summoned to respond to minor complaints involving people of color.

As in many of those encounters, including the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks and the questioning of black Airbnb guests in California, the Yale incident was captured in a widely shared video that set off anger online.

The graduate student, Lolade Siyonbola, posted a 17-minute recording of her encounter with police officers who responded to the call, and it touched a nerve, with more than 600,000 views as of Wednesday.

Accused Golden State Killer Faces Four Additional Murder Counts

Prosecutors in California have filed four additional counts of murder against Joseph James DeAngelo, saying investigators now have evidence linking him to all 12 killings attributed to the so-called Golden State Killer.

Santa Barbara District Attorney Joyce Dudley announced the first-degree murder charges on Thursday.

“Each of the four counts carry the potential for a sentence of life without possibility of parole or the death sentence,” she said during a press conference.

DeAngelo, 72, had previously been charged with eight counts of murder in cold case homicides across California in the 1970s and ’80s.

Inside the mountain base still on alert to North Korea’s missile threat

A lot has changed on the Korean peninsula in just matter of months — threats of fire and fury have been replaced with handshakes and optimism — but for the military organization that monitors threats to North America, it might as well be 2017 when it comes to North Korea.

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the joint Canada-US organization tasked with warning of incoming threats from the sky, continues to monitor North Korea’s nuclear program with the same intensity it did at the height of North Korea’s missile testing. In fact, NORAD and US Northern Command Center Director Col. Travis Morehen, a Canadian, says the organization still gets three or four intelligence reports on the country’s nuclear program every day.
.
“We’ve been watching the same as we were previously, the same as we watch any other nation that poses a threat to the United States and Canada,” he said.

How training doctors in implicit bias could save the lives of black mothers

There was a pool of blood, a look of panic on her husband’s face — and then everything went black.

Alia McCants was back at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, where nine days earlier, she had given birth to healthy twins. She and her husband had brought the babies home to their apartment in Harlem, and everything seemed all right — until complications from her cesarean section caused her to hemorrhage.

She rushed to the emergency room, where her vision went dim.

“My husband said, ‘You have to stay here, you have to stay here.’ And then I thought: I’m going to die,” she said.

Women Are More Likely To Die Waiting For An Organ Due To A Mix Of Biology And Bias

When Caleigh Haber was 22, she was told she was too sick for a lung transplant and would die.  Her doctors recommended focusing on quality of life with her limited time remaining, and she was given do-not-resuscitate forms. She quit her job as a pastry chef and her mother and brother moved nearby to be with her.

“I felt completely hopeless,” she recalled. “To me, it wasn’t so much facing death as it was leaving my family.”

Pictures from the time show a petite young woman in an oxygen mask, under five feet tall and weighing as little as 66 pounds. She had a habit of showing off for pictures: one arm flexed, the other tethered to an IV pole.

To her doctors’ surprise, she grew stronger and was eventually listed for a transplant, adapting to the fraught routine of waiting for a lung to become available.
