We love a restorative shower for its day-starting, head-clearing, muscle-relaxing power. But that long, hot shower that starts your day might not be doing your skin any favors.
Too much hot water can actually be bad for our bodies, according to experts in hair and skin care. We asked several dermatologists to weigh in on the definitive way to take a shower.

At first glance, small talk is sort of unquestionably terrible. Even if you can’t wait to meet new people, who wants to talk about the weather?
But linguists and social scientists say small talk is no small thing: It’s not what you’re saying that matters, but the social function it serves.
And it doesn’t just make parties way less awkward — it could actually make you happier. Dr. Gillian Sandstrom, a psychologist at the University of Essex, noticed that “just saying hi to the lady at the hot dog stand” gave her a bounce in her step. She asked people to count their social interactions for six days and found that those who had more daily interaction with acquaintances were happier.
She followed up with a study at Starbucks, asking people to either talk to their baristas or get their coffee with maximum efficiency. Those who engaged in chit-chat were again happier. And people who broke the silence at the Tate Modern were in a better mood afterward and enjoyed the exhibit more. Even college students who talked to more classmates than usual felt happier at the end of the day.

Cancer scientists have made an important breakthrough in understanding how the disease spreads, it was announced today.
Researchers at the University of Glasgow discovered how a particular cancer molecule speeded up the growth of the disease.
A report due to be published this week in Nature magazine describes how the molecule, called Myc, accelerates the growth of dividing cancer cells.
Cells have to grow to a certain size before they can split in two and they achieve this by producing protein.

Most of us don’t put much thought into it, but how we furnish, decorate and organize our office space can directly impact how we feel every day. We’re often told what to remove from our desks to help us work smarter (see ya, clutter and moldy coffee cups), but we rarely talk about what to “add in” to make our work spaces real winners. Enter TODAY’s Al Roker, who gave us the inside scoop on the stuff that makes him happier, healthier and more productive on the job.

Question:
The studies about the deleterious effects of sitting make me wonder if this is strictly related to the sitting posture (knees bent, back straight, feet on floor), or is it the inactivity that’s the culprit? Is lying in bed as bad as sitting and reading?

Kevin Burnes thinks his school saved his life. He arrived there at 14 years old, just out of rehab, and says it was exactly what he needed: a place where kids with drug and alcohol problems could stay on a path of recovery as they worked toward high school graduation.
“I have no question that it changed the course of everything I was doing,” said Burnes, now a music teacher and musician.
The school that made the difference was Phoenix, in Montgomery County, believed to have been the first of its kind in the country. It opened in 1979 amid concerns about student drug use and continued for decades before fizzling to an end four years ago at a time of flux for alternative programs.
Now the idea may be making a comeback, with school leaders looking into the possibility of a new “recovery” school program as the nation’s opioid epidemic draws wide attention. While some in Montgomery pose questions about cost and effectiveness, others say the program worked well years ago and could help those who struggle with addiction today.

The 1901 Dorland’s Medical Dictionary defined heterosexuality as an “abnormal or perverted appetite toward the opposite sex.” More than two decades later, in 1923, Merriam Webster’s dictionary similarly defined it as “morbid sexual passion for one of the opposite sex.” It wasn’t until 1934 that heterosexuality was graced with the meaning we’re familiar with today: “manifestation of sexual passion for one of the opposite sex; normal sexuality.”
Whenever I tell this to people, they respond with dramatic incredulity. That can’t be right! Well, it certainly doesn’t feel right. It feels as if heterosexuality has always “just been there.”
A few years ago, there began circulating a “man on the street” video, in which the creator asked people if they thought homosexuals were born with their sexual orientations. Responses were varied, with most saying something like, “It’s a combination of nature and nurture.” The interviewer then asked a follow-up question, which was crucial to the experiment: “When did you choose to be straight?” Most were taken back, confessing, rather sheepishly, never to have thought about it. Feeling that their prejudices had been exposed, they ended up swiftly conceding the videographer’s obvious point: gay people were born gay just like straight people were born straight.

We’ve all been there — the moment when we walk too fast on an icy day and lose our balance and know that we are going down. Hard.
.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a magical trick that we can give you never to fall again. Or to fall gracefully.
But if you are going to fall, you might as well commit to it and make it safe.
We talked to Femi Olagoke, a professional stunt performer, who told us some of his best tips for falling safely.

Push-ups are an amazing exercise because they work your whole body. They work the chest muscles and the core muscles at the same time, so a lot of the benefits you get from planks, you get from push-ups.
Push-ups are great for people of any age and fitness level, because they can be modified and changed in difficulty, so you can do easy push-ups on your knees, medium difficult traditional push-ups and very difficult plyometric clapping or one-legged push-ups, all with the same exercise.
But it’s also easy to get them wrong — in the IronStrength classes I teach, I see people with their hands too close together, their bodies sagging and yet getting nowhere close the ground.
