Relationships are hard. They can bring out the best in us, yes, but also the worst. They test the very essence of our beings: our capacity for forgiveness; our ability to trust (both ourselves and another); the true extent of our self-love; the strength of our boundaries; and the power of attachment.
Anything that can help bring us together, then, should be explored. And one scientific finding about love rises above others in the literature, if only for its rom-com level of magic.
Yes, I’m talking about the study made famous by the viral New York Times article by psychologist Mandy Len Catron. It not only outlined the original study, but backed it up by revealing that Catron herself had tested the concept … and fallen in love with her question-answering companion.

Several children in Mississippi had nowhere to go on Wednesday after their parents and caretakers were arrested in a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids at seven food processing plants targeting undocumented immigrants. Some 680 people in six cities were apprehended in the massive sting, which federal officials characterized as possibly the largest worksite enforcement operation ever taken in a single state.
It remains unclear how long these families will be separated.
A number of kids reportedly walked home from school in the afternoon only to be locked out — their loved ones nowhere in sight. Others were picked up by family friends and acquaintances, some of whom brought the kids to their parents’ worksites so the children could wave goodbye to their moms and dads as they were loaded onto buses by federal agents.

Sex trafficking victim Cyntoia Brown was released from prison Wednesday after serving 15 years of a life sentence for killing a man in 2004, the Tennessee Department of Corrections said in a statement.
Her story was first thrust into the spotlight when PBS aired a documentary about her in 2011 called, “Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story.” Celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Rihanna have lobbied for her release in recent years.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (R) granted clemency to Brown in January, commuting her life sentence for murder and making her eligible for release on Aug. 7.
A month earlier, the Tennessee Supreme Court had ruled that Brown must serve 51 years before she can be eligible for parole.

Police say they believe the two fugitives suspected of killing a North Carolina woman and her Australian boyfriend as well as another man have been found dead in Manitoba.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy said Wednesday authorities located two male bodies in dense bush and they believe they are 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryan Schmegelsky. She says she is confident it is them but an autopsy will confirm the identities.
Police said Tuesday that items belonging to the pair were found along the Nelson River in Manitoba. The two bodies were located a kilometer from the items.
McLeod and Schmegelsky have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Leonard Dyck and were suspects in the shootings of Australian Lucas Fowler and American Chynna Deese.

Every time a mass shooting occurs, the country talks about mental health. Many politicians are quick to point to the shooters’ disturbed minds. News reporters probe for “loner” tendencies or signs of instability.
“Mental illness and hatred pull the trigger. Not the gun,” said President Trump on Monday, after two mass shootings in less than 24 hours.
So is mental illness to blame for America’s mass shootings? Not according to research.
Some mass shooters have a history of schizophrenia or psychosis, but many do not. Most studies of mass shooters have found that only a small fraction have mental health issues. And researchers have noted a host of other factors that are stronger predictors of someone becoming a mass shooter: a strong sense of resentment, desire for infamy, copycat study of other shooters, past domestic violence, narcissism and access to firearms.

Her mother was shot and killed in what police believe was a terror attack fueled by hatred for Hispanic immigrants.

“Is my dad dead?” the 5-year-old asked her grandmother. For hours the family didn’t know, searching for facts of what had happened when police say a young white man started shooting outside and then inside a Walmart, killing 22 people and injuring two dozen more.
.
But yes, her stepfather — the man she called dad — was dead along with his wife. Skylin, the eldest of three children, had to be told. She responded with tears and a question about the killer: “Is he going to come and shoot me?”
Skylin is not alone, surrounded by the love of her remaining family. She has a younger sister, Victoria, and a baby brother, Paul Gilbert, 2 months old. The baby survived the massacre when his mom, Jordan Anchondo, shielded him with her body when she was shot. His father, Andre Anchondo tried to protect them both, relatives said.

James Baldwin once said that the poet is produced by the people because the people need him. This is also true of the novelist, which is why I believe Toni Morrison was produced by the people because the people needed her. America needed her. I needed her.
I encountered the novels written by Morrison, who passed away Monday at 88, during one of the loneliest times of my life. It was also, paradoxically, a joyous time. Transitions are often complicated like that. It was the fall of 2013. I had just moved with my husband and youngest son to live on the campus of an elite New England boarding school. I had never visited New Hampshire until I moved there — the shock was immediate.
I was a stranger in a village, the only one of my kind. Morrison’s books became my shelter; she was my teacher, a friend in my head who kept me company as I navigated this strange new landscape. As I witnessed white supremacy slowly being stoked by sinister politicians who sought to distract us, to divide us from each other and from the work we are tasked to do — she reminded me, in every book, that we are here to love one another, more thickly. And that we must look at the terror of history in order to be released from it.

Today, members of the millennial generation are ages 23 to 38. These ought to be prime years of careers taking off and starting families, before joints really begin to ache. Yet as a recent poll and some corresponding research indicate, there’s something missing for many in this generation: companionship.
A recent poll from YouGov, a polling firm and market research company, found that 30 percent of millennials say they feel lonely. This is the highest percentage of all the generations surveyed.
