Rock legend David Bowie wanted his ashes scattered in Bali “in accordance with the Buddhist rituals,” and he left most of his estate to his two children and his widow, the supermodel Iman, according to his will filed Friday in Manhattan.
The 20-page document, filed under his legal name David Robert Jones, said the estate was worth about $100 million, but didn’t break down the finances.
The singer left the SoHo home he shared with Iman to her, and half of the rest of his worth. His son from a previous marriage, Duncan Jones, received 25 percent and his daughter Alexandria also received 25 percent as well as his Ulster County mountain home.
The Sunday Times published a column by English journalist Dominic Lawson, elder brother of Nigella, with the headline “The One Sex Change on the NHS [National Health Service] That Nobody Has Been Talking About.” (Yes, really.) In it, Lawson argues that the problems facing Britain’s health care system are the fault of female doctors who prioritize their families over their work. Male doctors, he said, will work longer hours because they’re not as tied down by family, thereby saving the NHS money.
Unsurprisingly, the piece was slammed for its sexist and backward attitude toward gender and the workplace.
The most powerful response, however, came from the very same community Lawson set his sights on: doctors. Using the hashtag #PinkWednesday, doctors from around England on Wednesday posted selfies wearing pink, often accompanied by messages of encouragement for female doctors.
The #OscarsSoWhite was just a hashtag last year. This year, it feels like a movement. And the latest person to join the movement is Lupita Nyong’o, whose performance in the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave earned her the Academy Award for best supporting actress.
Nyong’o posted a statement late Tuesday night to her Instagram.
With the critical Iowa caucuses just a week away and polls showing Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton neck-and-neck, geography may play a bigger role than turnout in favoring Clinton.
Sanders is hoping to repeat the 2008 playbook of energizing young people and first-time caucus-goers that led Barack Obama to beat Clinton here. It’s working — he’s pulled even with her overall and is leading Clinton by more than 2-to-1 among people under 45, according a Des Moines Register poll, and by nearly 20 percentage points among people who plan to attend their first caucuses.
Where Obama succeeded in changing the fundamental makeup of the electorate, many candidates have failed after making similar promises, including Howard Dean in 2004 and Bill Bradley in 2000. Young people and first-time caucus-goers are just harder to turn out, and many observers believe Sanders’ biggest challenge will be getting his supporters to actually show up.
Character actor Abe Vigoda, whose leathery, sunken-eyed face made him ideal for playing the over-the-hill detective Phil Fish in the 1970s TV series “Barney Miller” and the doomed Mafia soldier in “The Godfather,” died Tuesday at age 94.
Vigoda’s daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, told The Associated Press that Vigoda died Tuesday morning in his sleep at Fuchs’ home in Woodland Park, New Jersey. The cause of death was old age. “This man was never sick,” Fuchs said.
Vigoda worked in relative obscurity as a supporting actor in the New York theater and in television until Francis Ford Coppola cast him in the 1972 Oscar-winning “The Godfather.” Vigoda played Sal Tessio, an old friend of Vito Corleone’s (Marlon Brando) who hopes to take over the family after Vito’s death by killing his son Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). But Michael anticipates that Sal’s suggestion for a “peace summit” among crime families is a setup and the escorts Sal thought were taking him to the meeting turn out to be his executioners.
This cop’s motto? To protect and to serenade, probably.
After the singer who was supposed to perform the National Anthem at a recent college basketball game between West Virginia University and the University of Kansas was stuck in traffic, unable to sing at the game, an unlikely hero stepped up to save the day with unbelievable grace — university police officer, Carlton Smith.
A video of the officer’s impassioned performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” done in his uniform, was shared on social media where people were left in awe of the law enforcement member’s pipes. Trust us — you will be too.
She roamed the streets of Bulgaria, her body emaciated. All her fur had fallen off to reveal cracked, dead skin.
A desperate plea made on Facebook to the Rudozem Street Dog Rescue (RSDR) was what ultimately saved her life.
“There was a link to a local news article which was calling for her to be caught and destroyed in case she was diseased,” Diane Rowles, one of the founders of RSDR, said in a blog post. In the photos provided, the rescue saw just how mistreated and neglected she was.
Turns out you can make your shoes waterproof in seconds at home, using nothing but candle wax and a hairdryer.
(While this trick works great on most footwear, you might want to use a waterproofing spray for more valuable pairs of shoes.)
What’s more, the above winter life hacks video from HouseholdHacker demonstrates how to lube a shovel with cooking spray, allowing it to glide through ice much faster than and pick up more snow with every scoop. Amazing!

If you were to ask 10 strangers to name the most powerful African Americans working in Hollywood today, you’d probably hear names like: Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Will Smith and Denzel Washington. The name you would probably not hear is “Byron Allen”. This is pretty insane when you consider that Byron Allen happens to be one of the most powerful and successful producers currently working in the entire entertainment business. He’s been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards. He has a mind-boggling 30 shows running currently on television. He has a staggering net worth of $300 million. And yet, even if you were to ask industry insiders if they’ve heard of him, most people would look at you blankly. Byron Allen has been in the entertainment business for decades. He first started out as a stand up comedian. At some point Byron shifted his focus to behind-the-scenes producing work. Over the years, he has quietly built an astoundingly successful entertainment empire that has been called the “Walmart of Television”. His empire rivals the likes of Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey. How did he do it? By working outside the box and creating an entertainment business model that is pure genius…
Washington, D.C., is bracing to be in the crosshairs of a monster storm that could clobber the East Coast with snow and ice this weekend, forecasters warned.
“Confidence is high in this being a historic snowstorm for the Mid-Atlantic region,” NBC meteorologist Bill Karins said Wednesday.
The nation’s capital could get 18 to 24 inches of snow, according to the Weather Channel. The National Weather service issued a blizzard watch for the city on Wednesday, and will be in effect Friday afternoon through late Saturday night. Baltimore, Maryland, was also included in the blizzard watch.
In the world, human beings are facing various problems. People who are full of greed, anger, and ignorance are seen to be fighting with each other in words and deeds. As the fighting continues, various problems such as civil wars, wars of aggression, and wars of aggression are occurring. As world peace is being destroyed, humans are facing unbearable problems. Innocent children and women are not getting the rights they deserve and deserve. I can't think of one thing every time. What is it? The United Nations. If we look at the responsibilities and duties of the United Nations, I think it is not suitable for solving the problems that are happening in the world today. In fact, the United Nations and the World Security Council, such an organization must rule the world, must be able to give orders, and must have various ways to obey orders. There must be no organization that can influence more than that organization. There should be experts from each country. They can even dominate the superpowers like the US, China, and Britain. Only then will global peace be achieved quickly. Now, if a country with power develops more militarily, economically, or socially than its own country, then powerful countries will jealously seek out enemies and wage war. Or they will attack with fighter jets. In this, innocent people are losing their lives. No one understands the value of a life. You should think about how to achieve global peace by controlling these. If the US continues to be the permanent president of the UN, world peace will never be achieved. If you think carefully, no one sees that they are working for the common good, but for their own benefit, for the benefit of their own country. The permanent president of the UN and the Security Council has rejected this, As a young Rohingya, I have come to realize that only by electing the president and secretary from among the countries in the world through a secret ballot system and governing the world fairly can we achieve global peace. The United Nations and the Security Council are organizations in which any country must govern, give orders, and make them obey their orders. For example, only when a defendant is tried in court can we hold the leaders of the countries in check and control them, can we achieve global peace smoothly. Otherwise, it will not be easy for powerful countries to use various excuses to end this war every year, every year, for the benefit of themselves and their countries. No country's leaders pay any attention to the words of the United Nations and the Security Council. If we look at it in practice, look at the Rohingya issue. Myanmar is a small country. Even that country has been under siege for 8 years. What action can be taken? Why is the UN and the Security Council Powerless? Without such Power, how can the organization bring about global peace? Everyone should think about it. Whether there is a veto or a strong one, all countries in the world can only achieve global peace if they are subject to the UN and the Security Council. Seek peace in the quiet embrace of nature. Peace is an indispensable need of the human race. It is not as if one person can kill another person, and it is as if one country can attack another country, but instead of trying to build peace, we must try to destroy the peace now, and the world is getting hotter and is on the verge of collapse. I especially appeal to all the world experts to urgently try to bring about peace in all parts of the world. Mr, Noor Muhamed Arkhan Rohingya Youth Myanmar
