Amazing Short War Story

This story is confirmed in Elmer Bendiner’s book, The Fall of Fortresses.

*Sometimes, it’s not really just luck.*

Elmer Bendiner was a navigator in a B-17 during WW II. He tells this story of a World War II bombing run over Kassel, Germany , and the unexpected result of a direct hit on their gas tanks. “Our B-17, the Tondelayo, was barraged by flak from Nazi antiaircraft guns. That was not unusual, but on this particular occasion our gas tanks were hit.

Later, as I reflected on the miracle of a 20 millimeter shell piercing the fuel tank without touching off an explosion, our pilot, Bohn Fawkes, told me it was not quite that simple. “On the morning following the raid, Bohn had gone down to ask our crew chief for that shell as a souvenir of unbelievable luck.

The crew chief told Bohn that not just one shell but 11 had been found in the gas tanks. 11 unexploded shells where only one was sufficient to blast us out of the sky. It was as if the sea had been parted for us. A near-miracle, I thought.

Even after 35 years, so awesome an event leaves me shaken, especially after I heard the rest of the story from Bohn.

“He was told that the shells had been sent to our armorers to be defused. The armorers told him that our Intelligence Unit had picked them up. They could not say why at the time, but Bohn eventually sought out the answer. “Apparently when the armorers opened each of those shells, they found no explosive charge. They were as clean as a whistle and just as harmless.

Empty? Not all of them! One contained a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it was a scrawl in Czech. The Intelligence people scoured our base for a man who could read Czech. Eventually they found one to decipher the note. It set us marveling.

Translated, the note read:

“This is all we can do for you now. Using Jewish slave labor is never a good idea.”

Bad Angel, P-51 Mustang

On the Saturday following Thanksgiving, 2013, Ms. Karen, my 94-year-old father,  Bill Gressinger and I were visiting Pima Air and Space Museum.

We were in Hanger #4 to view the beautifully restored B-29, when I happened to take notice of a P-51 Mustang near the big bomber. It’s name? “Bad Angel.

P-51 Mustang “Bad Angel” in Hanger #4 at Pima Air and Space Museum.

I was admiring its aerodynamic lines and recalled enough history to know that until the Mustangs came into service, the skies over the Pacific Ocean were dominated by Japanese Zeros.
Then something very strange caught my eye.

Proudly displayed on the fuselage of ‘Bad Angel’ were the markings of the pilot’s kills: seven Nazis; one Italian; one Japanese AND ONE AMERICAN. Huh?

“Bad Angel” shot down an American airplane?

                            Kill marks on “Bad Angel”

Was it a terrible mistake? Couldn’t be. If it had been an unfortunate misjudgment, certainly the pilot would not have displayed the American flag.  I knew there had to be a good story here. Fortunately for us, one of the Museum’s many fine docents was on hand to tell it.
                           ********************

In 1942, the United States needed pilots for its war planes, lots of war planes, lots of pilots. Lt. Louis Curdes was one. When he was 22 years old, he graduated flight training school and was shipped off to the Mediterranean to fight Nazis in the air over Southern Europe.

      Lt. Louis Curdes.

He arrived at his 82nd Fighter Group, 95th Fighter Squadron in April, 1943, and was assigned a P-38 Lightning. Ten days later he shot down three German Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighters. A few weeks later, he downed two more German Bf-109’s.

In less than a month of combat, Louis was an Ace. During the next three months, Louis shot down an Italian Mc.202 fighter and two more Messerschmitt Bf-109’s before his luck ran out.

A German fighter shot down his plane on August 27, 1943, over Salerno, Italy.
Captured by the Italians, he was sent to a POW camp near Rome.

No doubt this is where he thought he would spend the remaining years of the war. It wasn’t to be. A few days later, the Italians surrendered. Louis and a few other pilots escaped before the Nazis could take control of the camp.

One might think that such harrowing experiences would have taken the fight out of Louis, yet he volunteered for another combat tour.

This time, Uncle Sam sent him to the Philippines where he flew P-51 Mustangs
Soon after arriving in the Pacific Theater, Louis downed a Mitsubishi reconnaissance plane near Formosa. Now he was one of only three Americans to have kills against all three Axis Powers: Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Pilot Lt. Louis Curdes in his P-51 Mustang “Bad Angel”

Up until this point, young Lt. Curdes’ combat career had been stellar.

His story was about to take a twist so bizarre that it seems like the fictional creation of a Hollywood screenwriter.
While attacking the Japanese-held island of Bataan, one of Louis wingmen was shot down. The pilot ditched in the ocean. Circling overhead, Louis could see that his wingman had survived, so he stayed in the area to guide a rescue plane and protect the downed pilot.

It wasn’t long before he noticed another, larger airplane, wheels down, preparing to land at the Japanese-held airfield on Bataan.

He moved in to investigate. Much to his surprise the approaching plane was a Douglas C-47 transport with American markings.

He tried to make radio contact, but without success. He maneuvered his Mustang in front of the big transport several times trying to wave it off. The C-47 kept heading to its landing target. Apparently the C-47 crew didn’t realize they were about to land on a Japanese held island, and soon would be captives.

Lt. Curdes read the daily newspaper accounts of the war, including the viciousness of the Japanese soldiers toward their captives.

He knew that whoever was in that American C-47 would be, upon landing, either dead or wish they were.  But what could he do?

Audaciously, he lined up his P-51 directly behind the transport, carefully sighted one of his .50 caliber machine guns and knocked out one of its two engines. Still the C-47 continued on toward the Bataan airfield. Curdes shifted his aim slightly and knocked out the remaining engine, leaving the baffled pilot no choice but to ditch in the ocean.

One of “Bad Angel’s” .50 caliber machine guns built into it wings.            .50 caliber ammo for P-51 Mustangs.

The big plane came down in one piece about 50 yards from his bobbing wingman.

At this point, nightfall and low fuel forced Louis to return to base.

The next morning, Louis flew cover for a rescuing PBY that picked up the downed Mustang pilot and 12 passengers and crew, including two female nurses, from the C-47.

All survived, and later, Lt. Curdes would end up marrying one of these nurses.

For shooting down an unarmed American transport plane, Lt. Louis Curdes was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Thereafter, on the fuselage of his P-51 “Bad Angel”, he proudly displayed the symbols of his kills: seven German, one Italian, one Japanese and one American flag.

And As Paul Harvey use to say “ now you know the rest of the story “

New York City and Philadelphia have been spared the worst of a nor’easter, but the storm was walloping other parts of the region with heavy snow and high winds. Millions of people were still in the path of blizzard conditions.

The storm has brought chaos to travel and daily life, with about 8,800 US flights canceled between Monday and Wednesday and thousands of schools closed. Connecticut banned highway travel for several hours Tuesday, and some major regional rail traffic was suspended. At least three weather-related deaths were reported.

Ever wonder why penguins can gracefully get across the ice, and whenever we try, we fall *splat* on our backs?

Well, it turns out that the trick of the trade is their signature waddle, which allows them to keep their balance so they can swiftly get across slippery surfaces.

We talked to Femi Olagoke, a professional stuntman, for advice on how to get across the ice as easily as penguins do. It turns out all you have to do is take a page out of the winter expert’s book and think like a penguin.

Don’t fear superintelligent AI

New tech spawns new anxieties, says scientist and philosopher Grady Booch, but we don’t need to be afraid an all-powerful, unfeeling AI. Booch allays our worst (sci-fi induced) fears about superintelligent computers by explaining how we’ll teach, not program, them to share our values. Rather than worry about an unlikely existential threat, he urges us to consider how artificial intelligence will enhance human life.

Joni Sledge, a founding member of the vocal group Sister Sledge, was found dead Friday in her home in Phoenix, publicist Biff Warren told CNN on Saturday. She was 60 years old.

The Sledge family was shocked by her death as she had not been ill, Warren said. The cause of death was unknown.
The group of sisters recorded the dance anthem “We Are Family” in 1979. Other hits were “He’s the Greatest Dancer” and “My Guy.”

“Yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We are saddened to inform you that our dear sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin, Joni passed away yesterday. Please pray for us as we weep for this loss. We do know that she is now eternally with Our Lord,” the band said Saturday in a statement posted on their website and Facebook page.

Terrelle Pryor signs one-year, $8M deal with Redskins

Terrelle Pryor found a new home.
.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports the receiver signed a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins for $8 million.

The 6-foot-4 receiver couldn’t find the long-term, big-money contract, so, much like fellow wideout Alshon Jeffrey, he settled for a one-year “prove-it” contract.

The former quarterback busted out last season as the Cleveland Browns’ No. 1 receiver. The big-bodied, athletic playmaker earned 1,007 yards on 77 receptions and four touchdowns.

While he has the size, hands and speed to be a top-shelf receiver, Pryor still must improve his route-running acumen. The questions about Pryor’s continued growth at the position likely left him with fewer suitors on the open market than more experienced players with his athletic skills might have garnered.

Pryor’s stats down the stretch of last season waned as he dealt with a hand injury, but it’s fair to wonder if some teams viewed the struggles as defenses catching up with the new receiver.

Doctor Aims to Perform Head Transplant in 2017, Experts Remain Skeptical

.

A team of researchers led by an Italian surgeon say they are planning to perform the first human head transplant in 2017 and have even recruited a volunteer, but experts remain skeptical of the experimental procedure.

Dr. Sergio Canavero, director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, Turin, Italy, has proposed in two published medical articles that a head transplant is possible, thanks to new technology.

The technology allows for the body to be cooled during surgery and there are new tools that create a cleaner cut on the spinal cord and machines that allow people to be on bypass during surgery.

The team wants to go through with the procedure in December 2017, according to new reports on AFP and Central European News. One surgeon reportedly involved in the procedure, Dr. Ren Xiaoping, said the team will go through with the surgery only if future research supports their plan.

Awesome short video-resurrected B29–a time to recall

GRANDKIDS, PARENTS & GREAT GRANDPARENTS – a time to recall about 75 yrs ago

This’ll put a smile on your face

This is way different than many of our shared stories.   This one is about a famous airplane, the B-29.   It was used in World War II (1940’s) …. so this plane is about 75 years old give or take.   This is the last one remaining …. a gentlemen found it and restored it back to almost new.

When I got to the end of the video … I cried; watch for an elderly lady named Rosie, Watching this is like reliving part of the history of our country.   Think about it … our whole country was at war and virtually every man and woman was doing something to help.

In time you will come to understand more about war …. about how awful it is … about how necessary it is — SOMETIMES.

Enjoy this story …. I think it is an important reminder of our country’s journey to today … or our peoples’ capacity to rally to a single cause – the defense of our freedom … the defense of freedom around the world.

.

Some marvelous job, it flew again!

Să facem glume, nu război

🇲🇲Dear all peace-loving people around the world🇲🇲

In the world, human beings are facing various problems. People who are full of greed, anger, and ignorance are seen to be fighting with each other in words and deeds. As the fighting continues, various problems such as civil wars, wars of aggression, and wars of aggression are occurring. As world peace is being destroyed, humans are facing unbearable problems. Innocent children and women are not getting the rights they deserve and deserve. I can't think of one thing every time. What is it? The United Nations. If we look at the responsibilities and duties of the United Nations, I think it is not suitable for solving the problems that are happening in the world today. In fact, the United Nations and the World Security Council, such an organization must rule the world, must be able to give orders, and must have various ways to obey orders. There must be no organization that can influence more than that organization. There should be experts from each country. They can even dominate the superpowers like the US, China, and Britain. Only then will global peace be achieved quickly. Now, if a country with power develops more militarily, economically, or socially than its own country, then powerful countries will jealously seek out enemies and wage war. Or they will attack with fighter jets. In this, innocent people are losing their lives. No one understands the value of a life. You should think about how to achieve global peace by controlling these. If the US continues to be the permanent president of the UN, world peace will never be achieved. If you think carefully, no one sees that they are working for the common good, but for their own benefit, for the benefit of their own country. The permanent president of the UN and the Security Council has rejected this, As a young Rohingya, I have come to realize that only by electing the president and secretary from among the countries in the world through a secret ballot system and governing the world fairly can we achieve global peace. The United Nations and the Security Council are organizations in which any country must govern, give orders, and make them obey their orders. For example, only when a defendant is tried in court can we hold the leaders of the countries in check and control them, can we achieve global peace smoothly. Otherwise, it will not be easy for powerful countries to use various excuses to end this war every year, every year, for the benefit of themselves and their countries. No country's leaders pay any attention to the words of the United Nations and the Security Council. If we look at it in practice, look at the Rohingya issue. Myanmar is a small country. Even that country has been under siege for 8 years. What action can be taken? Why is the UN and the Security Council Powerless? Without such Power, how can the organization bring about global peace? Everyone should think about it. Whether there is a veto or a strong one, all countries in the world can only achieve global peace if they are subject to the UN and the Security Council. Seek peace in the quiet embrace of nature. Peace is an indispensable need of the human race. It is not as if one person can kill another person, and it is as if one country can attack another country, but instead of trying to build peace, we must try to destroy the peace now, and the world is getting hotter and is on the verge of collapse. I especially appeal to all the world experts to urgently try to bring about peace in all parts of the world. Mr, Noor Muhamed Arkhan Rohingya Youth Myanmar
