Police say a Florida man strangled and ran her over a 14-year-old with an SUV when she refused to have sex with him.
Adrian Mendez, 21, was arrested Monday in his home in Marion County, the Ocala Post reports. The girl was found lying on the side of the road Sunday evening with neck injuries and crushed legs and hips.
Her injuries were life-threatening, Click Orlando reported, but she is now in stable condition.
She told police that around 7 p.m., Mendez offered her $200 to have sex with him. When she refused, she says he pulled her by the hair into his SUV and choked her until she passed out.

Two brothers who spent 25 years in prison for a killing they insist they didn’t commit walked out of a Detroit courthouse as free men on Thursday.
Circuit Judge Lawrence Talon formally dismissed the murder charges against Raymond and Thomas Highers a day after Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced she didn’t plan to retry the men for the 1987 slaying of 65-year-old Robert Karey.
The brothers and the dozen or so family and friends in attendance abided by a request from defense lawyer Valerie Newman not to “hoot and holler” in the courtroom.
“There’ll be lots and lots of time to celebrate,” she told them.
Celebrate they did, once they poured out of the building.
Thomas Highers, 48, walked down the courthouse steps and gave his uncle a bear hug while cheers rang out.

A Florida woman who became famous for her uncontrollable hiccupping was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday night and will serve life in prison without parole.
A Pinellas County jury deliberated for four hours before delivering the verdict against 22-year-old Jennifer Mee.
Mee wept in the Clearwater courtroom as the verdict was read. Minutes later, Judge Nancy Moate Ley explained that the only possible sentence for the charge was life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The verdict and five-day trial was a sad end to a chapter in Mee’s short and sad life. Her attorneys said she suffered from schizophrenia and Tourette’s Syndrome, and a court psychiatrist said Mee’s intelligence was “low normal.”
As a 15-year-old, Mee developed a case of the hiccups that wouldn’t go away. She appeared on several TV shows and while on the “Today” show, was hugged by fellow guest and country music star Keith Urban. She tried home remedies and consulted medical specialists, a hypnotist and an acupuncturist, until the hiccups finally stopped on their own, though not for good.

A suspicious Missouri school official led police to a woman who allegedly kidnapped her own grandson 13 years ago.
Sandy Hatte, 60, is accused of taking the boy from his Florida home in 2000, when the child was an infant. She recently tried to enroll him in a Livingston County, Mo., school, but an official saw red flags, ABC News reports.
“They had some concerns about an individual who had enrolled a child into school and had some concerns if they were the actual parent,” Livingston County Det. Eric Menconi told the station.
The official was right. Authorities now believe that Hatte kidnapped the boy more than a decade ago while his father was at work. When she tried to send him to the school, she claimed to be his mother, WDAF reports.

Police who have dealt with serial killer Gary Ridgway say it’s worth continuing the search for his missing victims after Ridgway suggested he could help find them, but add the Green River Killer will “play games” and lie.
Ridgway has said he might be able to locate the bodies of more women he killed. Ridgway told KOMO () that the Green River Task Force mostly kept him in a van in 2003 when he directed them to sites in the Seattle area where he dumped bodies in the 1980s. He’d like to revisit every site on foot and says he could have had as many as 80 victims.
Ridgway was convicted of killing 49 women and authorities say it’s possible there are more victims. But King County Sheriff John Urquhart warns that Ridgway can’t be trusted.

The mother of the man apparently responsible for killing 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard said that her “heart is broken” in an apology released Wednesday.
Cathleen Alexis, speaking from her home in Brooklyn, New York, lamented that she could not explain her son’s horrific actions.
“I don’t know why he did what he did, and I’ll never be able to ask him why,” she said. “Aaron is now in a place where he can no longer do harm to anyone, and for that I am glad. To the families of the victims, I am so, so very sorry that this has happened.”
The statement comes two days after her son, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, opened fire at the Navy Yard around 8:20 a.m., killing a dozen people and wounding 14 others before dying in a shootout, according to police.

U.S. law enforcement officials are telling The Associated Press that the Navy contractor identified as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder. He also had been hearing voices in his head, the officials said.
Aaron Alexis, 34, had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for his mental problems, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the criminal investigation in the case was continuing. The Navy had not declared him mentally unfit, which would have rescinded a security clearance that Alexis had from his earlier time in the Navy Reserves.

A southern Illinois man was ordered jailed on $5 million bond Wednesday on charges he slashed and stabbed his 7-year-old niece after claiming, according to prosecutors, that she fell and pierced her neck on a stick and needed to be put “out of her misery.”
Justin DeRyke, 22, faces three counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege he stabbed Willow Long in the chest with a knife Sunday.
As first reported by the Effingham Daily News, Effingham County State’s Attorney Bryan Kibler said DeRyke told investigators he was baby-sitting Willow and her 3-year-old brother. His sister and the children’s mother, Ciara DeRyke, lived at the Watson home with them and her and Justin’s parents.

Aaron Alexis has been identified by police as the dead Washington Navy Yard shooter, NBC News reports.
Alexis, 34, originally of Fort Worth, Texas, recently began working at the Navy yard as a civilian contractor, the station reported. USA Today and CBS News also report that an unnamed source identified Alexis as the shooter, who was confirmed dead by police earlier today.
At least 13 people were killed — including Alexis — and more were wounded at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building after at least one gunman opened fire after 8:20 a.m. Monday, a Defense Department official said.
Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said at a press conference that a Metropolitan Police officer is among those who have been shot, among other “multiple victims inside who are deceased.” There were other reports that a naval security guard was reportedly among the wounded.
